I was fortunate recently to get hold of a copy of what could be one of his last books entitled "Bonfire Night." Callan and his side-kick "Lonely" are now millionaires but he has lost none of his ruthlessness. Mitchell also was responsible for continuing the saga of Jack Ford played by James Bolam in the series "When the Boat Comes In." This was another great series covering the period in the North East from just after the first World War until the Spanish Civil War and who can forget the opening tune sang I believe by Alex Glasgow. James Mitchell was born in South Shields in 1926 and in his life time wrote more than 70 novels and over 100 scripts. His wife died in 1990. |
