What song for my daughter?

Subject: What song for my daughter?
From: GUEST,Dave Hadfield

Hi,

Some friends and I play in a pub in Barrie, Ont, Canada, about once a month all winter, and last season my daughter Kelly, age 12, stood up and sang "The Water is Wide" with us. She sang well and it was a great hit with the crowd.

But she can't keep doing the same thing. If anyone could offer a suggestion for another tune, something sweet and pure and from the folk genre, we would appreciate it.

Thanks.

In a bit of shameless self-promotion I'd recommend An Emigrant's Daughter for a couple of reasons...

It's a true story about a girl about your daughter's age who died at sea on her family's voyage from Ireland to Canada. Secondly, there's a local connection for you. The young girl's family settled in Vaughan Township near Woodbridge, just a few miles south of you.

The only thing I'm not sure of is whether a pub is the place to perform a Celtic tear jerker like this one!

I've always liked Will You Go, Laddie, Go (Wild Mt. Thyme). It's a simple song but a lovely haunting melody.

Thanks.

Barry, that's powerful song with a lovely melody. As you say, it's pretty sad for a pub, but we'll keep it in mind.

Mudlark, yes Wild Mt. Thyme is also lovely. I just wish it had a verse different from its chorus.

Please don't stop!

How about "I Live Not Where I Love"?

(Hey, I can't believe that's not in the DT or the Forum!)

OK, "I Live Not Where I Love" IS in the DT: here and here. (Apparently having the word "not" in your search terms screws things up.)

At the risk of getting tomatoes thrown at me, how about her singing "The Unicorn" or maybe "The Cat Came Back?"

Some others that might work for her are "Geordie," "Shool Aroon," "Come All You Fair And Tender Ladies," "Mo Mary," "Scarlet Ribbons," "Star Of the County Down," "Isle Au Haut Lullaby," "River," "Give Yourself To Love," "The Circle Game," and "Cornflower Blue."

There's always BUSHES AND BRIARS.

This sounds beautiful sung by a clear young voice, and if people join in on the refrain (It's great for harmony) it will help your daughter's comfidence.

How about Song for Ireland? My daughter loved singing this at about the same age as your daughter. Good luck to your girl, and to you for encouraging her without pushing.

How about browsing the DT with her, and letting her pick one for herself?

This is really tough because so many traditional songs are about romantic love or from the perspective of someone older and passing "wisdom" down...or just plain bloody ballads. Here are a few. I'm not sure if the links work, the SuperSearch was giving me some strange results tonight and I had to use the DT alphbetical listings.

Daily Growing

All Through the Night

The Ash Grove (version 2 listed here)

Flow Gently Sweet Afton

The Bluebells of Scotland

Down in the Valley

Will Ye No Come Back Again?

What about some of the Rankin Family songs, such as Gillis Mountain. Whiskey in a Cup.

How about Bill Staines - Roseville Fair? Like Mary in Kentucky says, it's from the viewpoint of an older person, but it makes a great break.

Oh!!!There is a song. REALLY old. It's called Somebody's Waiting For You. Written by Vincent BRyan from the early 1900s.

A number of people have brought it back now and again. I know it from the singing of Cape Bretoner Charlie MacKinnon. Lovely song.

Ash Grove is a nice choice...also, what about Shady Grove (I've always loved the verse..."shady grove, shady grove standin by the door, shoes and stockin's in her hand, little bar feet on the floor...."

From: Mary in Kentucky

I love the "who will shoe your foot" words (papa will shoe your foot), so I searched for them in the DT. There are several versions of Ten Thousand Miles and Turtle Dove with lovely words, but none seem to have the tune I love.

The Storms are on the Ocean would be nice for the band and the audience to sing harmony on the chorus.

THE STORMS ARE ON THE OCEAN

THE STORMS ARE ON THE OCEAN

I'm going away for to leave you, love
I'm going away for awhile.
But I'll return to you some time
If I go ten thousand miles.

cho: The storms are on the ocean
The heavens may cease to be.
The world may lose its motion, love
If I prove false to thee.

Now who will shoe your pretty little feet?
And who will glove your hand?
Who will kiss your red rosy cheek
Till I come back again?

Poppa will shoe my pretty little feet,
Momma will glove my hand.
And you can kiss my red rosy cheeks
When you return again.

See that lonesome turle dove
As he flies from pine to pine.
He's mourning for his own true love
Just the way I mourn for mine.

I'll never go back on the ocean love
I'll never go back on th sea.
I'll never go back on the blue-eyed girl
Till she goes back on me.

I think the world must have changed since I was a kid. I know what I'd have said to my parents if they'd have suggested what songs I should sing when I was 12.

If you ever hear Loreena McKennitt sing the Irish ballad Bonny Portmore, I would truly love to hear any woman singing that song, including your daughter. Pure magic is all i can say.

Thanks all, for the great ideas. I'm going to print this page and explore it.

I'm no parental ogre, by the way. We tried her first idea, Only Hope (Mandy Moore), and she found it difficult to get quite right. Also, to be honest, I'm not sure I'm up to playing it.

She and I will pick through these ideas, and select one that she can sing well and I can play.

Much appreciated.

Two lovely songs that feature young girls are

The Tinkerman's Daughter and

The Flower of Northumberland.

Best wishes to you both,

How about Bonny at Morn. It's a beautiful Geordie lullaby. Otherwise a song that I started singing when I was about 16 was A maid Going to Colmer. Don't know if that's the proper title or who originally sung it as a friend taught it to me. Maybe someone else has more info on it. It's a really beautiful gentle song as well. I can give you the lyrics and maybe someone else can advise on how to get hold of the tune?

A Maid Going to Colmer

A maid going to Colmer her markets to learn
to sell for her mammy three hanks of fine yarn.
She met with a young man along the highway
and it caused this young damsel to tarry astray.

Sit down beside me I mean you no harm,
Sit down beside me this new tune to learn,
Here are three guineas you mammy to pay
if you'll lay by your yarn till the next market day.

Well this maid she's gone home with the words that he'd said,
The air that he played her still rang in her head.
She said I'll go find him by land or by sea
till he learns me the tune of the next market day.

Sit down beside me I mean you no harm,
Sit down beside me this new tune to learn,
Here are three guineas you mammy to pay
if you'll lay by your yarn till the next market day.

The Irish tenor John McCormack sang that one. It's also called NEXT MARKET DAY. Jim McCann who sang with the Dubliners also sang a version of that one. There are a number of versions with varying locals in the forum.

Thanks Brian. Good to know some background.

Just realised I missed out the most important verse:

After the first Sit down beside me verse, and before the maid 's gone home insert:

Well the maid she's sat down and the grass it was green,
The day was the fairest that ever she'd seen.
The look in your eyes beats a morning in may
and I'll lay by my yarn till the next market day.
