Tune Req: Cotton Fields (Lead Belly)

I'm looking for dots for 'Them Old Cotton Fields Back Home'.

Sadly I'm quite bad at transcribing from CDs etc. even if I had it on CD!

I plan to use it (speeded up a bit) for Appalachian dancing.

Any help much appreciated, the lyrics and teh (many) various artists who have recorded it are easy to find.

Perhaps I'm parsimonious (all right tight fisted) but I don't want to search out a collection of songs pay out a large sum of money for one tune which I will then have to transcribe to my notation software and work up to a fast dancing tune anyway!

so Please anyone HEELLLPPPP

A

Do you mean the song that was a hit for a group called (I believe) the Highwaymen? It started out "When I was a little bitty baby, my mama would-a rock me in the cradle, in them old, cotton fields back home ..."

I'd like to see what dance people can do to this a-rhythmic tune.

Impressive so far.

I'm assuming I can do somethign with Midi files. My notation software will write them so I assume it can read them so any other suggestions are still very welcome.

Leeneia, If we get it together I'll video it and try and get some footage on the web.

Not one dancer over 18 in those photos, shame about the musician though. WE now have a teenage musician (male) too! Things is looking up

These are the words I know (from The Beach Boys), but I'm curious how old this song (in its various incarnations) is and who wrote it.

When I was a little baby,
My mama would rock me in the cradle,
In them old, cotton fields back home. :|

Oh when them cotton balls get rotten,
You can't pick very much cotton,
In them old, cotton fields back home.
It was down in Louisiana,
Just about a mile from Texarkana,
In them old, cotton fields back home. :|

Ferlin Husky recorded the song, as did Johnny Cash, CCR and others, and I've seen it attributed to Leadbelly, but I'm not sure he originated the song or if he had more verses.

They would all have got it from Leadbelly. It seems pretty likely that he made it up - it's a kind of caustic commentary on the sentimental songs about how great the Old South was. Very much in the same frame of mind as Leadbell's "Bourgeois Blues", really.
