Number one was HUGE fun, and introduced a lot of pop fans to Jimmy Martin and the rest of them. Number two was pretty unexciting. It was to be released on the 5th but I found one today. I too, have #2 and found it so-so. #1 was great. I had it on vinyl but lost it in a move. I am not a total bluegrass fan, nor do I play one on TV, but his CD has not a rough edge like a lot of BG stuff does. Glad I gave y'all a heads-up. bph |

I have to take exception to the comments on Circle Two ... it's every bit as good and groundbreaking, but you have to remember it's from a different era. I admit that it's not the original, but it has some really good stuff. Emmylou, Levon Helm and few others gave wonderful performances. I thought that Bruce Hornsby's Bluegrass treatment of The Valley Road was neat. I'm going to wait for feedback from here before buying three, but I have to think that given the line-up it should be very good. |

(I was a little young when #1 came out!) I never got around to putting it on a turntable (it seems like so much work, nowadays), but now it's available on a CD. Volum III sounds like it was recorded in the studio, instead of in a more informal and congenial situation. To me, this album just doesn't sound as "personal" as the other two. Some of these are familiar, though veterans from the first volume have grown scarce: Doc Watson plays "I Am a Pilgrim" as a tribute to the late Merle Travis, who cut the same tune on the 1972 Circle session. Jimmy Martin returns too, his galloping, almost-reckless delivery undimmed by the years. From the 1989 sequel comes Johnny Cash, whose "Tears in the Holston River" eulogizes Maybelle Carter, his mother-in-law and the soul of the first Circle. New faces take the place of those who have departed: Willie Nelson is a logical addition. Emmylou Harris assumes her place in this pantheon, her voice breaking hearts even in harmony with Matraca Berg on "Oh, Cumberland." No performance stands out more than that of Taj Mahal, whose presence has a demographic significance and whose rollicking rendition of "Fishin' Blues nearly steals the show. Robert L. He's probably not still following this thread, but the song he quoted was not a Garcia/Hunter song. It was written by Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds. I think the Dead did cover this, but they didn't write it. |
