SLOW TRAIN THROUGH GEORGIA
(Norman Blake)

Down by the county bridge the gondolas roll,
Hauling down to Birmingham, dirty halflslag coal,
I shouldn't let 'em move me on, come sunshine, rain or drought,
'Cause just like the circle says, Southern servers the South.

CHORUS:

Hardships and troubles, Lord you know I've had some,
Gettin' older every day, I'm a fair weather bum,
Let me tell you, good people here it's just about time.
To catch a slow train through Georgia, and ease my worried mind.

Forty miles an hour, she's rollin' down the track,
Greasy rails, red clack trails, through the long leaf pines,
Anyplace that sunshine falls is where I want to be,
Southern Sunshine Special, won't you roll me to the sea.

Lord I wish I was livin' day to day, somewhere down the track,
C'mon gal, my old pal, don't you know we'll not look back,
I'll take down this old guitar, I'll play her every day,
And let the slow train through Georgia, roll my blues away.

At least that's how I figured it out. Have fun, BlueJay

LOL, I upstaged you, Lin! While you actually posted before I did, you've obviously already had the time change, while I haven't. BlueJay

RA sound cliphere, but I can't find lyrics. It's on his albums "Whiskey Before Breakfast" and "Slow Train Through Georgia" (appropriately enough). Anybody?

LOL, Bluejay! Thank you very much for posting these. I was hoping someone had them, as I really like the melody I found. May be forced (!) to go buy a Norman Blake album or two... :>)

Almost 5 years for a response! You really keep after it. Thanks heaps. How did you find the original request? Bob S.

ROTFLMAO! Mudcat never sleeps, Bob! (Literally, if you look at the time on Bluejay's post and mine!)

George Seto posted the request in the "Unanswered Requests PermaThread," but I'm darned if I know how he found it!

Hope it was still useful.

Was going through old threads to see what hadn't been solved. Found this one, and posted it to the Unanswered Threads Permathread. Bluejay must have looked at that thread, and looked into this.

Lin, I've been going through the Mudcat Forum one message by one, starting with Thread #1. I'm up to #575. Doing this in the small amount of spare time after all the fun, so I am only up to 575 after 4 months.

The original Slow Train Through Georgia was a book -- from the 1800s -- post Civil War. Humorous sights and tales and jokes and songs about the train and what it passed along the way and what the passengers saw and gabbed about. I used to have a copy---but can't find it now.

Good grief, George! You're a better man than I!

Art, sounds like an interesting book. Don't you hate it when a piece of your library disappears, and you have no idea where it went? It's one reason why I quit lending my books...

I didn't know that, Art. Great song, though. Anyone who loves American folk music and doesn't already have a copy of Whiskey Before Breakfast should run right out and get one. If the store doesn't have a copy, grab whatever they do have by Norman Blake; you won't be disappointed.

With all due respect, this is how I hear some of the lines

Down by the county bridge THEM gondolas roll
I SHOULD let 'em move me on, come sunshine, rain or drought
'Cause just like the circle says, Southern SERVES the South.
Greasy rails, red CLAY trails, through the long leaf pines

Out across that county bridge that old gondola rolls
Hauling down to Birmingham that dirty half slag coal
I should let it take me come sunshine rain or drought
Just like the cirlce says, The Southern serves the south

Hardships and trouble, you know that I've got some
I'm getting older every day, I'm a fair weather bum
Come all you good people now, It's just about time
To catch a slow train through Georgia and ease my troubled mind

Thirty miles an hour, she's just rolling down the line
Rusty rails and red clay trails through the long leaf pines
Any place there's sunshine, that's where I want to be
And its sunshine southern special won't you roll me to the sea

Chorus

I'll live my life out day by day, somewhere down the track
Come on gal my old pal, you know we won't look back
I'll take down this old guitar, I'll play her every day
And let that slow train though Georgia roll my blues away.

I was surprised not to be able to find the lyrics on the web. Bigchuck posted while I was transcribing it. There are enough minor textual variations from Bigchuck's version in the recording I was working from that I reckon it is worth posting as well:

SLOW TRAIN THROUGH GEORGIA

Stewie,

Good job, I've been playing this tune without lyrics, too. Big thanks to both of you.

It's another one of those great songs to play and sing. Folks respond to it well, always seems to generate toe tapping, and smiles.

I'm sure that Norman probably has as much variation in any two versions as the two posted above.

Non-rail fans might be interested in knowing that the Southern RR Co. had a circular logo on the sides of their rolling stock with the motto, "Southern Serves The South."
I believe the "Old 97" was on the Southern RR Line.
