Lyr Req: Sweet Corrinna ('Corrina' / 'Corinna')

There are some versions of "Corinna" or "Corrinna" here in the forum and DT, but not the version I have in mind.  Here are verses and portions of verses that I know.  Anyone know the rest of these verses or additional verses.  (The version I'm most familiar with is, I'm told, the version done by Taj Mahal .)

Also, Bob Dylan had a version of "Corrinna" on "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" and the liner notes credited him with the "words and music."  But I thought the song was older than he.  Anyone know how far back this song goes?

VM

Sweet Corrinna

There's a weepin' willow and a mourning dove. (x2)
Sweet Corrinna, she's the gal I love.

I got no little flower.  The frost has killed the vine. (x2)
I'll tote your whiskey all the way to the Fresno line.

Well, I'll chop your wood, baby, I'll even tend your fire. (x2)
...?

I got a bird that whistles, I got a bird that sings. (x2)
Without your love, baby, it don't mean a natural thing.

..................................................................log.
If I can't be your sweet baby, I'll be your salty dog.

'Cause Sweet Corrinna, she's the gal I love.

Steve Gillette and Condy Mangsen have a wonderful
version of it on their "Live In Concert" CD (not the
cassette). I don't have the CD handy, but I'm pretty
sure they don't credit Dylan for it.

I looked for their lyrics on the web, but it doens't
seem to be available.

You might try their home page:

and buy the CD ... it's
well worth it.

Cheers,

Very interesting website and history, Stewie.

Here are some of the lyrics I've gleaned (with chords).

SWEET CORRINA

              G                    C            D            G       G7
There's a weepin' willow    and a mourning dove
                C                  D                           G
There's a weepin' willow     and a mourning dove
D                      C              D      G   (C)  (G)
Sweet Corrina,   she's the gal I love.

Went down to the river,  sat down on a log.
Went down to the river, sat down on a log.
If I can't be your sweet baby,  I'll be your salty dog.

'Cause, I'll chop your wood, baby, I'll even tend your fire
I'll chop your wood, baby, I'll even tend your fire
I'll tote your whiskey  all the way from the Fresno line.

Got no little flower.  The frost has killed the vine.
Got no little flower.  The frost has killed the vine.
The blues ain't nothin'-- Corrina's on my mind

'Cause Sweet Corrina,  she's the gal I love.
'Cause Sweet Corrina, she's the gal I love.
Take me to heaven, child, tough the stars above.

I got a bird that whistles,  I got a bird that sings.
I got a bird that whistles, I got a bird that sings.
Without your sweet love,  don't mean a dog-gone thing.

I tried to check the spelling, but I find there is no consensus. Gracenote lists
210 recordings with the spelling "Corina",
27 recordings with the spelling "Corine",
336 recordings with the spelling "Corinna",
128 recordings with the spelling "Corinne",
491 recordings with the spelling "Corrina",
283 recordings with the spelling "Corrine",
21 recordings with the spelling "Corrinna", and
24 recordings with the spelling "Corrinne".

AMG/All Music Guide lists
6 recordings with the spelling "Corina",
0 recordings with the spelling "Corine",
11 recordings with the spelling "Corinna",
0 recordings with the spelling "Corinne",
158 recordings with the spelling "Corrina",
162 recordings with the spelling "Corrine",
0 recordings with the spelling "Corrinna", and
0 recordings with the spelling "Corrinne".

So I guess the best we can do is list all those spellings and hope that anyone who searches for one of them finds this thread.

Here's my transcription of the Ashley & Abernathy version at Honkingduck. (See Masato's link above.) I notice it is a lot like the Merle Haggard version here.

CORRINA, CORRINA

I left Corrina far across the sea. (2x)
Wouldn't write me no letter, don't care for me.

CHORUS: I love Corrina. Tell the world I do. (2x)
A little more loving, let your heart beat true.

Corrine, Corrina, what's the matter now? (2x)
Don't write me no letter, don't love me nohow. CHORUS.

Corrine, Corrina, where'd you stay last night? (2x)
Come in this morning, sun a-shining bright. CHORUS

Corrine, Corrina, it's fare you well. (2x)
I may be back here, can't never tell. CHORUS.

Jim- I guess you can add a few more to your list!

Eric Clapton recorded the song under the title, "Alberta" (Unplugged CD) and there are also versions entitled "Roberta."

Here's the first part of one of your verses:

Goin' down to the river, gonna set down on a log
If I can't be your sweet baby, I'll be your salty dog

Jim D., that list doesn't even consider the options of spelling it with a "K." (Al Gore's daughter is named Karenna, I think.)
