I am looking for the words to "Elkhorn Ridge" as done by Clarence Ashley. I believe he recorded it on an old Doc Watson and C. Ashley album. Thanks in advance.

I can't find it on any of the Ashley recordings that I have. It is not on the Watson and Ashley set of 'Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's'. I have a version by Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin as a delightful banjo duet. Their source was Oscar Wright but, as they say, sounds like 'Roscoe Holcomb meets Hank Bradley'.

ELKHORN RIDGE

Standing on top of old Elkhorn Ridge
My true lover by my side
Waitin' for some east bound train
Lookin' for to take a ride

Yonder stands my own true
(S)he's all dressed in brown
(S)he is the darlin' of my heart
I'll see him/her when the sun goes down

Working on your county road
For a dollar and a dime
Give a dollar to that gal of mine
This old dime is mine

Crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy
Darlin' I'm crazy about you

Standing on top of old Elkhorn Ridge
My true lover by my side
Waitin' for some east bound train
I'm lookin' for to take a ride

Source: transcription from Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin 'Blue Lightning' Rounder CD 0284.

I hope this is of some use to you.

Stewie, you're right about it being Oscar Wright. It was on an old album along with Matokie Slaughter and a few other good ole timey clawhammer banjo players.
Thanks a lot, just what I need.

Hi, I was wondering if anybody here know when this song, Oscar Wright's version, is written, and if it's copyrighted still or if it's ok to cover it freely?
Thanks!

Below may be Oscar Wright's rendition of the song in question.

You could check out the copyright situation with Dave Freeman owner of County Records who issued the original recording which is still available on County Records clawhammer banjo series.
