I've got a problem: I want to make a compilation for someone whose grandma has just died, and have promised him Amhran Mhuinise - the song where a woman requests that she be buried not in her husband's place but in Mweenish in Connemara. But I can't find it in my hundreds of CDs. I used to have a handy little Mac thing called Findit that indexed all the CDs, zips, etc that you put in your computer, and if you looked for something it could tell you what CD it was for - but no longer, and it doesn't seem to be available online any more either. Anyone know what album Amhran Mhuinise might be on? |

Usually, I find recordings by searching CD's at one of the online dealers like CDNOW, but they couldn't help this time. I tried a Google search, but that didn't work this time. [A woman by the name of Máire Ní Chlochartaigh wrote this song while she was on her death bed. she was married to Taimín Bán Ó Conghaile of Leitir Calaidh but she wanted to be buried in her own place, Muighinis (near Carna, Co Galway). But the weather was so bad for three days after her death that it wasn't possible to make the boat trip to Muighinis and she was buried in Leitir Calaidh instead.] "Sarah recorded this song and its English translation - on one of the cassett tapes that accompanied my book "Blas Meala/A Sip from the Honey-Pot" (Irish Academic Press, 1985). It is the same recording that is included on the present tape. I thought it was on Amhráin ar an Sean Nós, but nope. I'm sure I've heard a version of it on Raidió na Gaeltachta that's relatively populist and modern, but can't think who sang it. |

I heard Johnny Mháitín Learaí in person sing this to another air about a week ago. Of course, my tape player was in my car(Kicks himself). Nice version, Phillipa, I'll have to save this thread. One was on Sara Ghriallais's new album of sean-nós from Connemara, which I got - it's beautiful, unaccompanied, but a bit hard to follow. It's a fabulous album, though, produced by French company Cinq Planetes. The other two were on two albums by Ragús, one called just Ragús, the other either Ragús Anseo or (more likely) Ragús, An Seó. Haven't got either of these yet. |

The sources are Béaloideas 1311,367-9 (Carna) and Stoc, Jan. 1925 In Béaloideas the song was titled "Amhrán Mháire Ní Chlochartaigh" and the story was given much as above, from the telling of Éamann Ó Conghaile of Árd Thiar, Carna. Parts of this song are also found in another lament called "Bríd Ní Ghadhra", published in Stoc, Jan. 1925 and also in T. Ó Ceallaigh, "Ceól na n-Oileán" (Dublin, 1931 – and I believe recently re-issued by Cló Iar-Chonnachta) Brian, there's also a song in Nua-Dhuanaire III called "Taimín Bán". |
