Translation (from Scottish Gaelic):
Tonight's the first night of the Autumn When I was sent to watch the barn, Not sent to keep its store. Last night I heard the hunters calling Between the bayhead and the fording. `Twas not the voice of lad or hound But the voice of a woman -it was all haughty - Whom a band of young men followed. She could have her choice of them; The youth she chose, full skilled and knowing With no feud to fear from foemen.
As recorded by Maggie MacInnes and her mother Flora MacNeil of Barra on the album "Eilean Mara" , Dunkeld Records, 1998
The album notes give the lyrics and translation, but no background information.
