14 Oct 02 - 08:53 AM (#802724) Subject: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: McGrath of Harlow Since we've had the upgrade, with the automatic thread splitting, I keep on finding myself with increasing frequency reading old posts under the impression they are new posts, and only realising I'm doing so when the growing feeling of deja vu is crowned by reading one I wrote myself. Not that I mind - it gives a fresh angle on things."What a load of irrelevant tosh this fella is writing - oh it's me..." The incomparable Les Barker says the last, or possibly the first word, on the phenomenon - "Deja vu: a rhyme; it is impossible to experience deja vu for the first time." |

14 Oct 02 - 08:02 PM (#803139) Subject: RE: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: Burke McGrath, are you sure it's the splitting? I've just dipped into at least 3 threads I thought I'd be interested in. It turns out I am & was--they have been refreshed recently. |

15 Oct 02 - 06:04 AM (#803379) Subject: RE: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: McGrath of Harlow Not just the splitting, it's the refreshing as well, as it always has been. But the splitting system makes it a bit more frequent. This isn't a complaint. I suppose it would be possible to have it so that a split thread opens on the most recent one - but re-reading old stuff isn't a bad idea. You notice things you missed. Deja vu is a very folky thing anyway. We like the old songs, and play the old tunes, again and again, all with repeats. There was a fella on the radio some time ago who was saying that when he first heard Irish music he used to think "It's all the same tune". And then he got into it and he'd say "No, it's no the same tune at all." And then he really got into it, and came to the conclusion "Yes, it is really all the same tune - and I like it." |

15 Oct 02 - 06:30 AM (#803396) Subject: RE: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: Dave Bryant I've lost count of how many times I've seen two or more threads about the same thing seem appear almost simultaneously. Obviously they could be prompted by a topical event. If they are started by people from the same area, they could also be the result of a particular performance. In most of these cases, though, the threads are started by different people who are geographically separated - often by oceans, and about subjects which are not specially topical. Of course people should really search the forum (and if suitable the DT), before they start a thread - especially for things like obituaries or music/lyrics requests, but I still think that it's uncanny that so many cases crop up. |

15 Oct 02 - 12:19 PM (#803635) Subject: RE: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: GUEST,Nick One man's DejaVu is another man's. Or perhaps it was. As for if one should start a thread before checking out the archives, I dont see the harm in starting anew, it will seem new for the person who starts it ( at first), provides others with that creepy feeling of familiarity. And beside lets face it the whole thing is a bit of a delightful waste of time, and time again. Nick Nick |

15 Oct 02 - 04:36 PM (#803826) Subject: RE: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: khandu Several years ago, a night spot opened in Jackson, MS, named "Deja Vu". As my lucky wife and I, along with some friends passed it, lucky wife said, "Oh, look! They have opened a new spot." To which I responded ,"Yes, I have "already seen" it." No one got the joke. k |

16 Oct 02 - 11:36 AM (#804470) Subject: RE: BS: Deja vu and the Mudcat From: GUEST,Itinerant Genie Well, I don't know if this is connected to the phenomena you folks are discussing, but ever since the "new Mudcat" appeared, I keep having this happen: 1. - I read a thread. 2. - I post to it. 3. - I open the thread to check my post, and it is in the expected sequence among the other posts. 4. - The next day I open the thread again and there are several other posts between my post and the one that was "last" when I posted mine. Sometimes this results in my post looking silly. E.g., I make a point or ask or answer a question that has not been mentioned in the thread. The next day, other people's posts with the same Q or info appear before mine, and it looks like I've ignored them. Is this part of the "time warp" thing? Genie |
