It is not on my list of the stupidest country song titles so I hope it really never existed. But the tune is another thing. It has been around forever and is beautiful. I am trying to think of some other songs that use it. There are several. But the "Great Speckled Bird" is the best. The theology in the song may be a little skewed but the spirit is there. Can anyone identify the source of the words to the "Great Speckled Bird" and who recorded it first? I am an old guy with a lot of time and all I did was genealogy until I found this site. Now I have two ways to waste my time. I am probably not good at searching data bases. I have an MS in Math and studied Boolean Algebra but the search engines don't seem to obey me. Well, I have had a stroke and maybe the Boolean Algebra went the way a lot of other things have gone. The track listing mentioned from a release of Bear Family Records resembles the track listing of both his live at Folsom Prison and San Quentin albums, (with some songs missing from both albums). This song was recorded at Folsom, and I'm sure that he sang it, because he wanted to sing some humorous lyrics for his audience. In anyway, there are other lyrics to this song; such as "In the ball-park of your life, I go the strike-out." And maybe some other lyrics which I can't remember at the top of my head; which weren't in that version. |
