Lyr Req: Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart

From: JVZ

I'm looking for the lyrics to a song that Johnny Cash recorded. I believe the title is "Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart" and has the tune of "Great Speckled Bird" (also ""Wild Side of Life" and "It wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". Thank you!

I never heard of this song and I hope Johnny Cash didn't record "Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart". It is not on my list of the stupidest country song titles so I hope it really never existed. But the tune is another thing. It has been around forever and is beautiful. I am trying to think of some other songs that use it. There are several. But the "Great Speckled Bird" is the best. The theology in the song may be a little skewed but the spirit is there. Can anyone identify the source of the words to the "Great Speckled Bird" and who recorded it first?

In the mean time, I hope you find the "Flushed .." lyrics - then again, I hope you don't, if you know what I mean.- Philip Hudson

If you were embarrassed to ask about this, imagine how I feel that I know it! Ha! Ha! But I'll sit up proud and start typing these lovely lyrics. I have sung this for my own enjoyment for several years. I have been looking for a song to sing for the compilation tape that is being put together. Maybe I will submit this one. Secretly I like it! I copied the words from a book so they should be correct. Are you sitting down? Here are the beautiful lyrics:

FLUSHED FROM THE BATHROOM OF YOUR HEART
Words and music** by Jack Clement
As recorded by Johnny Cash on "At Folsom Prison" (1968)

From the backdoor of your life you swept me out, dear.
In the breadline of your dreams, I lost my place.
At the table of your love, I got the brush off.
At the Indianapolis of your heart, I lost the race.

CHORUS: I been washed down the sink of your conscience.
In the theatre* of your love, I lost my part.
And now you say you've got me out of your conscience.
I've been flushed from the bathroom of your heart.

In the garbage disposal of your dreams, I've been ground up, dear.
On the river of your plans, I'm up the creek.
Up the elevator of your future, I've been shafted
On the calendar of your events, I'm last week! CHORUS

* The word theatre is pronounced The-AY-ter.
** The tune of the verses is "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes"/"Great Speckled Bird"/"Wild Side of Life". The chorus is somewhat different.

Sincerely,
gatyam gal

Thank you, gatyam gal. Asfor the rest of you, don't pick on Johnny. In spite of the title, it's not a poor taste bodily function song. Rather it is a fun "let's see how many syllables we can put in one beat" song in the same good clean fun spirit as "The One On The Left"

The tune is also used in "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes."

The allusion is to Jeremiah 12:9

"Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round
about are against her. . . ."

Art Thieme - Thanks for your humor. I liked your puns - two in one. Nathan Sarvis: Thanks for the reference. I know about Jer.12:9 but I had forgotten "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes", which is pretty good lyrics but which I could use the total of because I have forgotten them. I'm an old guy. From: Nathan Sarvis

Well Philip, it IS in the data base, but since you asked. . .

"I'm Thinking tonight of my Blue Eyes"
(Carter Family)

'Twould been better for us both had we never
In this wide and wicked world had never met,
But the pleasure we both seemed to gather
I'm sure, love, I'll never forget.

Cho: Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
Who is sailing far over the sea.
I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
And I wonder if he ever thinks of me.

Oh, you told me once, dear, that you loved me;
You vowed that we never would part.
But a link in the chain has been broken
Leavin' me with a sad and aching heart.

When the cold, cold grave shall enclose me
Will you come near and shed just one tear?
Will you say to the strangers around you
A poor heart you have broken lies here?

Of course there are lots of proposed titles for Country Western Songs. The one that comes to mind is: "Don't yell through the screen door, Mother, you're liable to strain your voice."

I've stepped up to the plate and taken the first swing. Anyone else ready for this dangerous game?

This is absolutely the best, most fun, most informative thread i have ever participated in. I am an old guy with a lot of time and all I did was genealogy until I found this site. Now I have two ways to waste my time. I am probably not good at searching data bases. I have an MS in Math and studied Boolean Algebra but the search engines don't seem to obey me. Well, I have had a stroke and maybe the Boolean Algebra went the way a lot of other things have gone. But thanks for a very good time. I have been singing all these songs to the venerable tune. Are there any more to that tune? Does anyone know how old it is and where it started? Philip Hudson

Phil! stop hitting your "reload" button, old guy! One of the quirks of Mudcat is that clicking on reload causes the last message you posted to be reposted. If you want to see if more threads have been added, click on the "show threads" button again. Better yet, register as a user (its free) and use the "Show threads since last visit" feature.

I frequently made the same mistake when I was new.

Phillip,

I, too, have an MS (not scholastic---just the disease)---never had a stroke though (yet). But Mudcat's been a great hangout for me too since I found it a few months ago---an oasis---like a tree house where friends gather. Fun and diverting and informative and scholarly and even very moving things happen here quite regularly!!

Welcome aboard!!!!!!!( And thanks to all of you! )

Yeah & remove all your fillings and quit eating wheat (glutin) and no Nutra Sweet and eat a turd pizza 5 days a week etc. etc. etc.

And if you got a NATURAL REMISSION while you were eating the turd pizza you'd go on TV & say it was eating the turds that cured you!!! (A CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE TURD KIND!)

The bees don't help---they just hurt!

(But thanks!)

BATHTUB OF LOVE

Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle went my hopes and aspirations
I sit here all soapy in quiet desperation

Well, I wish you hadn't left me to the stars up above
When you pulled the plug out of my bathtub of love

For your love you know I would have done most anything
All that I've got left to show is this dirty old ring

Well I wish...

Had a rare few minutes on a Saturday afternoon and figured I'd drop in. Glad to see Art here (I owe him a note).

My father used to talk about a song called "I Want To Be A Jesus Cowboy In The Holy Ghost Corral." He didn't have anything but a title. My mother tells me that he and a fellow editor wrote some lyrics to the tune of "Life's Railway To Heaven" and actually sung it somewhere but I don't thing it was ever published. I'll ask my mother if she can find the words.

well. I heard on the radio, about 30 years ago.."Johnnie Broke My Heart at Walgreens, and I Cried all the way to Sears."

also, sitting in the car in a Dairy Queen parking lot...I heard the last 2/3 of a song which SEEMED to be titled "Pusan U" with something in the chorus about..."they asked me where I came from, and I said, "Oh, Pusan U"..(I gathered it was some loose pun on a University in South Korea..*shrug*...and the singers sounded like they 'might' be Homer & Jethro...but I never heard this gem again...anyone know either of these masterpieces?

"I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes" was first recorded by the Carter family in 1929. Sara Carter recalls that it was already an old tune back then. I believe A.P. Carter wrote the words.

And while we're at it, who could ever forget:

"If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me?"

Lyrics to "Pusan U" (parody of "Sioux City Sue")(Homer and Jethro)

I drove a troop of airmen down
Down old Pusan way.
They were bang-bang raiders
From Chinhae 'cross the bay.
I met a gal from old Chinchu.
She was a sight to view.
I asked her where she came from,
And she said "Pusan U."

Old Pusan U.
Old Pusan U.
The school that's best in all the land
The university that's grand
Old Pusan U.
Old Pusan U.
I hail my alma mater:
To you, old Pusan U!

We had an A-1 baseball team
We won a game or two
They'd ask us where we came from
And we'd say, "Pusan U."
We had a pitcher who was tops.
Our batters they were too.
And every time we'd come to bat,
The crowd yelled, "Pusan U!"

Old Pusan U.
Old Pusan U.
The school that's best for engineers
A-frame ox-carts pulled by steers
Old Pusan U.
Old Pusan U.
I hail my alma mater:
To you old Pusan U!

I wrote some aditional lyrics to the " Bathroom of your heart " a few years ago as it seem a bit short for performing, if anyone is interested I can dig them out and post them. It would be fun to hear them with a sleazy sounding Country band(banjo, fiddle, mandolin)backing sometime, *sigh*

Yes, the lyrics posted way up above are correct, including the way he
pronounces theatre. The track listing mentioned from a release of Bear
Family Records resembles the track listing of both his live at Folsom
Prison and San Quentin albums, (with some songs missing from both albums).
This song was recorded at Folsom, and I'm sure that he sang
it, because he wanted to sing some humorous lyrics for his audience.

In anyway, there are other lyrics to this song; such as "In the
ball-park of your life, I go the strike-out." And maybe some other
lyrics which I can't remember at the top of my head; which weren't in
that version.
