Hi Nichole,

Welcome to Mudcat. Hope you find what you want, but also stick around and meet some of the folks. It's a nice place to hang out.

A good place to start looking is on the Links page of this site. Go to the bar under the Mudcat Cafe title at the top of this page and click on the word Links. Then you can search for the Celtic links we have.

Are you interested in a particular type of Celtic music - songs, or music for a particular instrument, or dance music, etc. Let us know in this thread and we will jump in with our personal favourites.

You can find a lot here: http://genres.mp3.com/music/world_folk/world_traditions/european/celtic/

The quality is spotty...some is very good, and some is very poor.

Are you looking for a particular form of notation, Nichole? Piano? Just melody line?

Do you want to hear the tunes first, before trying to find and download the notation?

I don't think she wants dots - just recordings

MP3.COM is probably the biggest single repository but I would have though a Google serach on "Celtic MP3" would give enought hits to keep Nichole busy from now till past the end of her honeymoon.

Much better to have a live band if possible - there is probably one near you, wherever you are. In my experience, Ceilidh bands love doing weddings, and they are very reasonable to hire. (At least, mine was!)

Given that you don't know anything about Celtic music, I'm curious as to why you've decided to chose it for your wedding?

I have recently been listening to celtic music in fact and want to play celtic music (feat. violin etc) for background music at dinner time at my wedding as well as my partner and I wish to waltz to some celtic music but we have to find some good music.

Can anyone suggest any bands that have no lyrics just instrumental music that I can purchase their cd at retail level??????

I am genuine and I do not appreciate people being rude to me.(Esp. Ed)

Although I am only a guest( I will get a rude reply now I expect) you have to forgive the odd rudie. I don't think it is really meant.

"Celtic" is such a blanket name. Do you mean Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish or Breton?

(not to mention minorities like Manx and Galician)

(nor that you'll sometimes find English music under the heading "Celtic" in record shops even though it isn't.)

If you've heard music you like, why don't you find out what it was and get that?

Try the Chieftans. Good, Irish, varied, no songs, dozens of albums to choose from.

Choice of music depends on the purpose for which it is required. Much recorded music is intended to be interesting for a listener, and is arranged in a different format than music played for dancing.
A set of tunes for a dance may contain a number of different tunes, but they will be in the same basic tempo and rhythm. A set for listening will often mix music of different types - a slow air followed by a reel or hornpipe, or some other combination.
For Irish music Altan play mainly tunes with an occasional song, De Dannann do interesting sets of tunes, but a higher proportion of songs on a CD. The Chieftains do mainly music which might be suitable for playing in the background at your wedding.
For Scottish, you might check out Silly Wizard and Caperailie. The Battlefield Band do very interesting sets of tunes plus great songs.
As I say - it depends on the specific requirement of why and where the music is needed.
Quack!

Hi Nicole,

If you can give us an approximate location of where your wedding dinner will be, someone may be able to refer you to live musicians. However, if you aren't planning to hire musicians, you should let us know that, along with the Celtic fiddle music you are interested in (ie, what music is it that you have heard that you fell in love with, so we can point in the proper direction). If you are interested in using fiddle music as background music, your best bet may be to burn your own CDs for use during the dinners.

But to help you, we really do need more information from you.

Nicole,

I apologise if I seemed rude. That certainly wasn't the intention. I was just asking a question.

As others have said, you do need to define what you mean by 'celtic' a bit more clearly in order to get decent help.

If you are looking for waltzes, our suggestions will be different than if you are looking for jigs, reels, and polkas. There are some recordings that include waltzes, but most "celtic" instrumental music you will find will be jigs and reels and even hornpipes, which may not be what your guests will know how to dance to.

Any CD you find will probably have a mixture of both fast and slow tunes.... unless you can find one that is all slow airs which you may be able to use. I did a search on www.cdnow.com and didn't come up with anything that was strictly slow instrumental tunes that you could waltz to. You will probably have to settle for a mixture unless you hire musicians to play just what you want. I'd go to cdnow.com and look at all the Chieftains recordings, listen to sound samples, and then get what fits you.

You might try an Ann Heyman (harp) CD.

She is in Townsville Australia, and wants some nice Celtic music to play as background during the reception and for the Bridal Waltz,

I suggested Musicman's CD "Farewell" (beautiful selection of Celtic waltzes), and the "celtic Odyssey", "Celtic Legacy" series....

And getting ready for a wedding, likely doesn't have time to burn her own CDs!

Well, if Nicole isn't going to hire musicians, then there are a number of CDs of fiddle music that come to mind. First are the CDs by Celtic Fiddle Festival, though the live performance one is obviously out if it is just to be played "as is" for background music. There is the Fiddlesticks CD too. Chieftains are a good suggestion too, but she needs to be careful not to buy the CDs with the pop singers!

There are many beautiful instrumental CDs of Celtic music, much too numerous to mention. She can go to the Green Linnet website and listen to entire albums! Also, the efolkmusic.com website has a very small collection of Celtic artists to be listened to and downloaded. I'd also suggest she have a look in at the Maggie's Music website. Likely to find some lovely stuff there to her liking too.

Best wishes to the happy bride and groom!

BTW, I second the nomination for Ann Heyman, and throw in a nomination for Kim Robertson as well! And the lovely ladies at Maggie's Music.

Nichole,

Try Alan Pomeroy in your local phone book. Alan, apart from being a fine performer, was President of the Townsville Folk Club and knows most of the local folk musos.

A suggestion for CDs of background music for a wedding - try Celtic Treasure and Celtic Treasure II - they are instramentals of Turlough O'Carolan's music done by many artists. I like the first one a bit better than the second, but they are both excellent. Music not just for a wedding, but to listen to for a lifetime. A great buy for $14.99.

You can find them both at Amazon, where the have clips to listen to as well.
