Help,
I am looking for information on a folk group called the Wayfarers who played maybe in the eighties? I've searched on the internet and can only find an American group called the wayfarers.

The Wayfarers were the resident folk group at the Brisbane Folk Centre from when it started in 1962 (?) until it closed in 1977. They are still playing Wednesdays at the Kookaburra Cafe in Brisbane (after about 150 changes in membership!).

The original members were Stan Arthur, Bob Stewart, Garry Tooth, and Theo Bosch.

Stan, a long time collector and enthusiast, has been the constant that has kept the group going. Bob has been back with the group for the last few years after a long break. Garry Tooth (the best male voice the Wayfarers ever had) now lives down in the Blue Mountains behind Sydney - and still turns up at National Folk festivals. Haven't seen Theo for many years, but I believe he is still living around Brisbane somewhere.

The original group produced an LP in about 1964 or 65 (one of the first records I ever owned - it disapeared many years ago), and later manifestations issued a few CDs of stuff like "Aussie Drinking Songs" which sold a few copies, I think, but weren't really vintage folk music.

After all this, though, I think the Ripley Wayfarers might be the ones Linda is seeking.

The group were know as both the Wayfarers and the Ripley Wayfarers at different times. They made several albums under both names. Their last group was called "Rogues Gallery" and made at least one album under that name. If you can get to the Brewtown Folk Club at Burton on Trent on Friday 29th Nov Mick Pete will be appearing with John Squire and would I'm sure be happy to chat to you. Mick Pete currently presents a Radio folk prog on Radio Derby on Monday nights with Lester Simpson of Coope, Boyes and Simpson. There was a group called The Wayfarers in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies.
They were residents at Preston Folk Club at one time.
The line-up varied over time (as usual with most amateur or semi-pro groups) but included Ian Gartside and Brian Preston (known as Brian Dewhurst in those days).
Both of them still perform around the north-west in various groups.

The US Wayfarers that R-J mentions as a quartet later became a trio. There are at least two other albums by the group, "Live at the World's Fair," (that would have been Seattle), and an LP of Civil War Songs.

I have another LP from 1956 called "The Wayfarers". It was composed of Paul Blaine an operatic baritone, Ilka Sylvern a soprano, and Lee Schaefer a "singer of jazz and pop songs" They do folk material probably more from the Richard Dyer-Bennet school of folk performance. The album notes also say that they have "an ever-growing following" so they should be really big soon.

Talk about a typical name for an early folk group...

If they were starting out now (as youngsters, I mean) they'd probably have a name like "3 Dead Lymbo" or "Snapt Basterd" or something along that line...

Yes, if you mean the Wayfarers who were the folk group in the early-mid '60s. I liked 'Old Blue'. I had a really scratched up copy of the 'Come Along' With the Wayfarers album but my brother found a good copy and made (don't tell anybody. I don't suppose it's piracy because I DO have the original) on CD that turned out well. A couple of guys who were in the Wayfarers moved Charleston, SC here in the mid-70s. They opened up a bar/nightclub downtown called "The Whale's Tail' and I used to go listen to them. I'm trying to look up whoever was in that band, but one guy was Ray Bluen (sp??) and the other guy just called himself Whale (because he liked whales) and the two of them playing and singing together sounded just like the old band. They called their duo "Beresford Creek" after a little body of water down here. They had a big cause to keep Charleston from getting too big and ruined like they saw happen to Southern California. Alas, the Whale's Tail' went under and I lost touch with the guys.

The Wayfares was a very popular American Folk Group. The group broke up in the mid-sixties and two of the Wayfarers opened a folk club in Charleston, South Carolina.

I was a member of a USO show that was in Charleston South Carolina to catch a military transport. We stopped by to say hello and that was the last time that I saw or heard from them. I also have a copy of the Hungry i album.

The Wayfarers were a successful group of folk singers in the early 60's. they had several albums, one of their members, "Sean Bonniwell" went on to form the garage rock band called the "Music Machine." When I knew them, they were all young men with a lot of enthusiasm for the folk genre. Another of their memebers is a retired Superior Court Judge in Calif. Sean now records Christian music and is himself a born again Christian. One of the hi-lites of my life while living in San Francisco was the opportunity to know and hang out with these guys.

I was the founder of The Wayfarers around 1968 in Lancashire. Along with Brian Dewhurst, Dave Peter and, along the way Jed Pinder and Steve Ococks, we were a successful folk band playing clubs, universities and other gigs, We made two LP's and toured Holland as well as appearing on Folk on Friday a few times. I've never heard of Dave Wayne so he probably didn't play in the band - but who knows, they were good old days not to be missed. Get in touch though Ian Gartsides Facebook.

I was a member of RCA Victor's, The Wayfarers: Dick Bailey, Sean Bonniwell, Tom Adams and myself. We performed and recorded from 1961 thru 1966. Dick and I continued to perform until the mid 70's while I finished up grad school in Charleston, SC. We were joined by Buddy Owens and called ourselves, Beresford Creek... a " folk grass " group.

The Wayfarers have gone their separate ways. Dick passed away several years ago of a rare disease. Sean went on in music and formed the folk rock group, The Music Machine and had a couple of hit songs, the biggest being " Talk, Talk ". Tom, like myself, went on to grad school. His bent was in Law and he was a respected attorney in Santa Barbara. He now currently serves as Superior Court Judge in California. I finished my grad degree and taught college econ at two colleges, the latter in western Virginia before retiring.

Sean continues to write and perform and specializes in Christian music. He is based out of Porterville, CaliforniaI also continue singing as a solo folksinger out of Lexington, Va. and I also perform with the eclectic acoustic quartet, The House Mountain Group. Tom and I continue to work " regular " jobs as well.

Of the four of us, three were veterans: Tom and Dick USN and I, USCG.

Life is good and oh, the stories we could tell.

Ray Blouin

Hey guys, I just tripped over this thread as I was surfing about the Wayfarers. Does anyone remember a gent named Corky Hart who may have played with the group. I bought a 1960's Gibson j45/50 back in the mid to late 80's from him. At that time he mentioned that he played with the wayfarers at one time. Was wondering what might have become of him.

Hi,

He does remember you. We had dinner the other night and I brought it up. He works in Cali, but he lives here in Summerville (crazy commute!). He said to say, "hi". He still has a decent collection, but with all his kids and grandkids into music (and several in bands and all living everywhere from Hawaii to SC and numerous places in between), has a difficult time keeping anything! Poor guy! He said to ask you about a guitar case, then laughed.

Take care,
Lisa

I knew Ray Bluen when he was teaching in North Charleston, SC. He and his buddy 'Whale' (I can't remember his real name) opened a bar downtown Charleston called 'The Whales' Tail' but it didn't go over. I sure loved to listen to them and drink a pitcher of beer. I lost track of him after he moved to (W.) Virginia. I don't think 'Whale' is with us anymore. I think 'The Whale's Tail' folded because it was very hard to find and word didn't get around and of course they weren't doing 'mainstream' music. I know it wasn't because of the music, because that was GREAT!

Nowadys he still absorbs himself with music, albeit mostly Digital, but still performs at Dance classes with his wife, she teaches clog dancing and they often help produce/write & play at local productions. They live in Belper,Derbyshire and own 3 Vet surgeries ! The Wayfarers i am a bit rusty with, although i often see Mick Peat, and sometimes Barry Renshaw.

The "Wayfarers" I do/did know were those featuring Brian Dewhurst (aka Preston) hailing from the place of the same name. There seem to be others although possibly hailing from somewhere in the US.

I was married to Corky Hart of The Wayfarers folk-rock group out of Chas, SC It was actually in the 60s & 70s. Tom & Sean were with the group before Corky & David joined. Corky & Ray Blouin & David Hull were close friends and the last part of the group for a few years before they broke up, because of the manager. I think David married Rays sister,( Tinker ? )
Last I heard, Ray still lived in Chas., & Corky lives in Summerville, SC, now married to Melony B. Corky goes by the name Charles C Hart for business. Don't know his phone number, you might find out from our daughter, Lisa Hart Rabang, also in Summerville.

The US Wayfarers were a group similar to the Limelighters in syle. I personally heard them perform in Jacksonville, FL in late 1963 0r early 1964 when I was a Naval officer stationed nearby. As a hard-core 60's folkie, I was very favorably impressed, as I recall. When I transfered to a new Naval duty station in Charleston, SC, in the fall of 1964, I found they had split up and two of them had opened a second floor folk club there and billed themselves as the "Half-fares". They performed themselves and had other local and touring acts.

There was an American folk group called 'The Wayfarers' in the early 60's and played together through the early 70's. Individuals members have been playing since and I think Ray Bluen is now in Virginia, still playing banjo like crazy and singing. He and another original member duoed up in a nightclub in Charleston SC around '76 for a while until Ray moved. I can't remember his partners name (I just remembered they called him 'Whale' but he unfortunately died from a rare diabetic type disorder that went undiagnosed. Some of their songs were 'Come Along', 'Old Blue', 'The Grape Tasters'. They were very good musicians, sang beautiful harmonies and their interpretation and presentation caught your attention. The only thing wrong was that the folk movement was gone by the 70's or they would have been bigger players for much longer.

During the 1960s, my wife, Barbara, and I, worked for RCA. There were so many Very Good Folk Groups. RCA recorded most of them, on both, the RCA label - and other labels. We got to meet so many of these Groups, including some of the Wayfarers.

We collected all four of their RCA LPs:
1504 Wandering w/The Wayfarers
2666 Come Along w/The Wayfarers
2735 The Wayfarers At The Hungry i
2946 The Wayfarers At The World's Fair.

Nice Music. Nice Memories.

"There was another trio called the Wayfarers, from East Devon, who would come to the club occasionally."

These are the ones I am trying to track down. These are the ones on London Folk Song Cellar no. 32. This can be heard here:

1/ Wish I was in Bowling Green
Sittin' on the Square
With one arm round m'whiskey jug
And the other round my dear
The other round my dear Bowling Green...
Oh.... dear old Bowling Green

2/ Wish I was a bumble bee flying through the air
I'd buzz beside my Patsy dear
Touch her if you dare
Touch her if you dare Bowling Green...
Oh.... dear old Bowling Green

3/ If you see that gal of mine
Tell her this from me
That if she loves another man
I will set her free
I will set her free Bowling Green...
Oh.... dear old Bowling Green

4/ If you love me touch me girl
Put your hand in mine
That if you love another man
I'll leave you behind
I'll leave you behind Bowling Green...
Oh.... dear old Bowling Green

5/ Wish I was in Bowling Green
Sittin' on the Square
With one arm round m'whiskey jug
And the other round my dear

Oh.... dear old Bowling Green

Raredance: The US Wayfarers that R-J mentions as a quartet later became a trio. There are at least two other albums by the group, "Live at the World's Fair," (that would have been Seattle), and an LP of Civil War Songs.

I only have only of those as a trio and not the same band(s) at all:

Wayfarers
Tom Adams, Dick Bailey, Ray Blouin & Sean Bonniwell ‎– At The World's Fair, RCA ‎– LPM-2946 (see multiple posts above)

Trio#1
Wayfarers
Paul Bain, Lee Schaefer & Ilka Sylvern – 2 LPs for RCA (see: Thomas Stern, 19 Aug 14—09:40 AM, above)

Trio#2
Wayfarers Trio (out of Oklahoma)
Bill Cheatwood, Baxter Taylor III & Mason Williams – 1 LP for Mercury, Songs Of The Blue & Grey, SR-60634, 1961

All three members of the formal "Trio" had a pretty good run in the music biz after they went their separate ways.

I remember Ray Blouin back in the early '60's. He was a member of the North Charleston swim group "the Blue Angels." He was a superb swimmer and banjo player.
