The chorus went, 'What do you think I've been doing all day? 'Boozing, bloody well boozing' Not much to go on I'm afraid. Does anyone know where I can find the rest of it??!! |
24 Oct 02 - 08:04 AM (#810007) Subject: Lyr Add: BOOZING^^^ From: Bat Goddess It's in the DT. I learned it years ago from Evan Leonard. Here 'tis (from DT), if you don't want to search for it: Boozing Now what are the joys of a single young man? Boozing, bloody well boozing! And what is he doing whenever he can? Boozing, bloody well boozing! You may think I'm wrong and you may think I'm right, I'm not going to argue, I know you can fight, But what do you think we are doing tonight? Boozing, bloody well boozing! cho: Boozing, boozing, just you and I Boozing, boozing, when we are dry. Some do it openly, some on the sly But we all are bloody well boozing. And what are the joys of a poor married man? Boozing, bloody well boozing! What is he doing whenever he can? Boozing, bloody well boozing! He comes home at night and he gives his wife all He goes out a-shopping, makes many a call But what brings him home hanging on to a wall? Boozing, bloody well boozing! And what does the Salvation Army run down? Boozing, bloody well boozing! And what are they banning in every town? Boozing, bloody well boozing! The stand on street corners, they rave and they shout, They shout about things they know nothing about. But what are they doing when the lights are turned out? Boozing, bloody well boozing! Recorded Roberts & Barrand, I think^^^ |

Unfortunately, we entrusted the words to one of the circle who absconded with them. Linn |

24 Oct 02 - 11:03 AM (#810175) Subject: RE: Boozing, bloody well boozing From: Bill D "What is the joy of the whole laboring class" Why, boozing, bloody well boozing. What is it robs a poor man of his brass? Why, boozing, bloody well boozing. It ruins the liver, it addles the brain- It inspires our singing again and again. What gives such fair measure of pleasure and pain? Why, boozing, bloody well boozing!" |
24 Oct 02 - 11:24 AM (#810200) Subject: RE: Boozing, bloody well boozing From: Dave Bryant The first verse that I've sung for years goes:- What are the joys of the single young man ? Why boozing, bloody well boozing. What is he up to when ever he can ? Why boozing, bloody well boozing. You may think I'm wrong and you may think I'm right. I won't argue with you 'coz I don't want a fight. But what do you think we're all doing tonight, We're boozing, bloody well boozing. I've added a second verse:- What are the joys of the single young girl ? Why boozing, bloody well boozing. What gets her head in one hell of a whirl ? Why boozing, bloody well boozing. She starts of on tonic, then to lager gets lead, And winds up on vodka - way out of her head. Then wakes up next morning in some strange fellow's bed. From boozing, bloody well boozing. My old mate Dave Diamond wrote a parody called "Skiving" which is in the DT HERE. |
24 Oct 02 - 11:31 AM (#810208) Subject: RE: Boozing, bloody well boozing From: MMario the "young girl" verse I know: What are the joys of the single young miss ? Why boozing, bloody well boozing. And what is she doing when she can't get a kiss ? Why boozing, bloody well boozing. She has no suitors, she turned them all down and scared them away with a soul-chilling frown, But what makes her friendly when she puts a few down? Why boozin', bloody well boozin'! |

24 Oct 02 - 01:10 PM (#810293) Subject: RE: Boozing, bloody well boozing From: MMario welcome foxbat! The answer is obvious - up until now you have just imagined you existed. Pay no attention to those who mention such things as addictive or "mind sucking" We all know we can quit anytime. We just don't want to. |

17 Aug 10 - 06:10 PM (#2967448) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boozing Bloody Well Boozing From: Betsy I've just read the other related thread "Boozing" and still no one seems to know the song writer. Apparently someone reckons it goes back to the 1920's. I would be interested to find out - but I would offer a long shot(s). In the event that it is not as old as stated above, could it be Barrie Roberts of Walsall, or Stan Crowther of Rotherham ? Both great blokes are sadly passed away so I can't ask them, but annoyingly for me , the song seems to have one of their songwriting fingerprints. Can anyone shed further light ? Cheers Betsy |
18 Aug 10 - 10:49 AM (#2967859) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Boozing Jolly Well Boozing From: Sandra in Sydney Australia's Alan Musgrove has recorded "Boozing" on his CD - The Bagman's Gazette - A collection of Australian Folk Songs" 2004. available here note from CD. Track 2 - Boozing Learnt for the singing of Harry Cotter (b. 1899) of Binalong, NSW. Harry learnt the song during his Rugby playing days (1918-1922). On his self titled LP, produced by the Folk Song & Dance Society of Victoria in the 1970s, Harry states "Some of these Sydney teams come up to Binalong for the long weekend. That's where I got the "Boozing" song, off one of them fellers. Real big fella he was, larrikin, used to play with just the shorts. No boots or socks" This song would seem to have it's origin in the music hall although it's exact source is unknown. A version transcribed from the singing of English duo John Roberts & Tony Barrand appeared in "Sing Out!" magazine in 1974. They learnt it from Tim Hart & Maddy Prior who were also unsure of it's origin. =========== I listened to Alan's version & it is similar to OldMadTom's version, tho it only has 3 verses. Where do you think I've been all the day Boozing jolly well boozing Where do you think I've spent all my pay Boozing jolly well boozing I won't say you're wrong I won't say you're right. I don't wanna argue, I don't wanna fight But where would you like me to take you tonight Boozing jolly well boozing Boozing boozing, whenever you're dry Boozing boozing, suits you & I Some do it open, some do it sly But we all love to go boozing what are the joys of a hard-working man Boozing jolly well boozing What is he doing whenever he can Boozing jolly well boozing He goes home on payday, he gives his wife all At many's the pub there's been many a call What makes him prop himself up by the wall Boozing jolly well boozing chorus What do the Salvation Army run down Boozing jolly well boozing What are they doing in every town Boozing jolly well boozing They stand on street corners, they hover & shout They jump on beer barrels, they spruik & they spout But what are they doing when lights are turned out Boozing jolly well boozing Chorus |

27 Jan 14 - 08:54 PM (#3596006) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Boozing Bloody Well Boozing From: Big Al Whittle a typical folkie faux pas. I can remember my mother being horrified and outraged by me singing it round the house when I was a teenager. One day someone will get a handle on working class prurience and hot it works. How does a class which produces and patronises Roy Chubby Brown get outraged by Philip Larkin and DH Lawrence. |
