24 Oct 02 - 03:28 PM (#810378) Subject: BS: Earthquake near Fairbanks, Alaska From: katlaughing I haven't heard a thing on the news about this, but my neice just had her first experience of going through an earthquake, night before last. She and her family just moved to the air base there. She woke up about 330a and felt the whole house moving and shaking. Apparently the military is very strict about their buildings being able to "go with the flow" so to speak, so nothing was damaged. According to local radio reports it was 6.3 on the Richter Scale and was one of about 40 earthquakes of that one night, centered about 60 miles away in the Denali State Park! Has anyone seen any news reports on this? I think all of our Alaska Mudcatters are a lot farther south and didn't feel this one. Thanks, kat |

The quake struck near Denali National Park early Wednesday with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 on the open-ended Richter Scale. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said residents could feel the earthquake from Fairbanks to Anchorage. Reports say phone service to the Denali park ranger station is down. Seismologists say there is no danger of the earthquake causing a tsunami - a large ocean wave - as its epicenter was more than 500 kilometers from the coast. |

Just trying a bit of one-upmanship on Manchester eh? 37 earthquakes in the last 4 days (leading up to Swinton Folk Festival of course) Seriously - hope no-one was hurt. Good luck out there - 3.9 is scary enough - never mind 6.3! Cheers Dave the Gnome |

Here in Hawaii we get sorta touchy about those things...even more so when I lived in Hilo! The last big one in Hilo, in 1960, came from an earthquake in Chile. Also glad this wasn't like the 1964 one that badly damaged Anchorage. I've been in Earthquake Park there. Aloha, Mark |
