BS: Some b****** stole my car

From: Mrs.Duck

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woke up this morning to find a dry patch where my car used to be! Unfortunately I had left a box of work on the seat - three years worth of kids assessment lost, not to mention my planning folder!! The police have given us a crime number (that's probably all they will do) and we have spent the morning driving around in the vain hope we may see a paper trail of kids work - even enlisted the help of the dustman who by coincidence is the partner of a teacher who had the same happen to her and so was extremely sympathetic and helpful.
Right just felt the need to sound off about this but if you do see a Vauxhall Nova let me know!
A very p****ed off Duck!

commiserations Jane .....you have lost some irreplacable items even though they have no intrinsic value. Hope you do find the work and the car.

Feel for you Mrs D, happened to me and friends in the past. Sounds like its not a new car so unlikely to have been stripped for parts or put in a container and shipped to some obscure part of the world so good chance it will turn up eventually, hopfully with contents intact. We are given poor advice from the law enforcement community about car crime. Yes it is unwise to leave VALUABLES in your car, especially if they are visible from outside as they tend to attract the thief, but from the point of view of the victim, its the IRREPLACABLE items that cause the most grief, keep them with you and let the insurance company take care of the valuables. I have made the same mistake myself so I am not having a go at you, just trying to warn others as a result to both our unhappy experiences. FINGERS CROSSED FOR A HAPPY OUTCOME.

Some B*****d stole my car!
Some B*****d stole my car!
Some B*****d came an drove it away,
It was a cruel work. They even nicked some schoolwork
It's not where I would park,
Now papers I can't mark
And though, it had to go
The cops said "Oh..
Chance of finding it is zero"
I'll wander near or far
To find who stole my car

With apologies. Best of luck in recovering it MrsD!

Nigel

So sorry, Mrs. Duck. Had the same thing happen a few years ago and lost everything inside the car. I was at a parent/teacher meeting at the time and it was parked right outside. Bastards!

Not what you need on a Monday morning ...or any other time for that matter. Sorry to hear about it.

Keep an eye out for skips and check them in case your papers are there. You might even phone skip companies and ask if they'll keep an eye out for the docs. A friend of mine had his car stolen some years ago with the only copy of a script which had just been commissioned for television; it could have been a mega headache for him ... but they found it in a skip on the edge of town.

If it's an ordinary fairly beaten-up teacher's car, as opposed to a flashy expensive new one, there's more chance that it's been taken for a drive and might be left sonewhere.

Of course even if it's just been "borrowed" and left undamaged, there's a good chance that it'll just stand there to rot and be vandalised. Probably with a "Police Aware" sign stuck on the windscreen, which means they know it's there, but won't get round to doing anything about it.

This is the kind of technical fix that would help, if only it were available and affordable.

Sorry to hear this Jane, hope the work turns up, I know how you feel,I lost all the practical work, records, instrument traces printout etc, for my Finals Project when the Post Office it was mailed at was raided and the mail stolen and never seen again, No intrinsic value, not worth registering or insuring as it was "without value" but irreplacable to me,
Great sympathy from here...Bastards!!!!!

I am in Tennessee USA, and am unfamiliar with UK cars. But a Vauxhall Nove, if it isn't too expensive, would be a nice Secret Santa gift. If you can find a way, I'll lend you my truck. Brewster the Rooster wouldn't mind too much, although it is where he keeps his harem!

I live in a very good neighborhood. I walk my dog all over the place, and, I'm always amazed to see so many cars parked in front of houses with the keys in the ignition. Talk about an invitation!
If you lock your car and put valuables out of sight, 9 times out of 10 a thief will look for an easier mark. But, if you leave a new BMW parked in a rough neighborhood, the car itself is a valuable, and it will probably be stolen.
I hope you didn't leave the keys in the ignition?

Bugger! Sorry to hear that Mrs. Duck. When thieves stole my Hyundai Pony a few years ago, they LEFT the car in a park, but KEPT my 1960 Harmony Sovereign 12 string with the custom bridge. So.....I got the dumb car back, but I've never seen that one of a kind guitar again. Hope your work turns up.

There are times when I would have been HAPPY to have my car stolen - though I doubt if insurance would have paid off anyway...

Sorry to hear this has happened - the REAL tragedy is the paperwork lost

Insurance never covers what the car is actually worth (ie what you have to pay to get an equivalent replacement.)

But it could still turn up. I remember there was a story a few years back of someone had his car stolen, and then found it returned with some mileage on the clock, but washed... Not too likely, but live in hope.

Mrs D,

My sympathies. With my old Montego, they didn't even consider it worth nicking, just smashed the driver's window and stole the battery, and that, when it was parked on my drive while I was at work (how's that for an insult).

What area are you in? What is the Registration Number? What colour is the car?
It's not much I know, but every 'catter who knows is another pair of eyes on the street.

Bummer, Mrs. Duck!

I've had a car stolen (and taken for a joyride) and windows broken by folks who stole the radio/tape deck and in one case some tapes, including the master copy of a studio tape of some of my songs. The police seem not to have time to pursue or prosecute this type of theft. (They're too busy busting folks for using pot and cocaine.)

I hope your insurance company doesn't try to increase your rates or drop you because of the theft. When my old beater Datsun was stolen a few years ago, Safeco tried to drop all my coverage--not just the comprehensive-- on both my cars (including the much newer Toyota). I talked them out of that, finally, but they did drop the collision and comprehensive on the Datsun, even though I don't think I submitted a claim, ultimately, since the towing cost (to retrieve the abandoned car) was not much more than my deductible).

Lets hope maybe they'll find it and you'll get your papers back.

Genie

For what its worth then the colour is red registration K650PVH so no, not a new car. Unfortunately the reason I left the books in the car was because my hands were full of the lap top and digital camera!!¬! Both easily replaceable items! I had intended going out again to get the rest later of Friday evening but one of the children took ill and it went out of my head - they then took it in turns to be ill so never gave it another thought until Maddie asked where my car was this morning! Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Was Friday night a full moon or something? Friday was a real bad day here - first the cats killed a robin, our first bird visitor for over half a decade .. then I jumped off a bus hurriedly in a town 15 miles away from home and left a wallet with cash, cards, free bus pass and rail travel card in it. Dear old British Rail (except it isn't anymore is it?) took pity and issued a travel warrant so I could at least get home. Despite calling the bus company within minutes and them radioing the driver, the wallet had already been "had".
Then, horrifyingly on the way home a gang of 10 year olds drunk on whisky!! tried to force their way onto the rail carriage past me - I was more worried they were going to fall onto the rails....

What is the World coming to ??

Had a car stolen from the airport parking garage in Montreal 3 years ago. The police were very helpful and cordial, but when I asked the chances of recovery all I got was a gallic shrug and the news that the car was probably in a container on its way out of the country.
Never heard from or of it or them again. Best way is to put on some kind of aftermarket ignition disabling device. Might not work 100% but at least it may buy enough time to make your car inconvenient for a thief.

Sorry, Mrs. Duck, to hear of your woes. Theivery is rampant in the US because the cops don't take it too seriously. Well, it's not all theoir fault but the sysytem in general where crime is rampant and state's attorney's get bored with smaller cases and don't put their hearts into them. No, if the crime doesn't have any entertainment value, than heck with it. Just plea bargain the danged thing and hopefully the next one will have some spice to it....

So, I'm sure you're real mad and that is understandable. Now hopefully the insurance company will not pile on but be helpful. I had a car stolen that was owned by my comapny. The insurance for the company wouldn't cover it because it was not stolen from the compant parking lot and my home owner's insurance wouldn't cover it because it was owned by the company...

Good luck, Duck, and don't leave anything imporatnt for the thieves to take...

Bobert

Well I hope this brings a smile. A number of years ago I went to breakfast in the cafe in the ground floor of the building in which I worked, mostly lawyers in the place, well at one of the tables was a coleague and friend, litterally crying. I sat down with him and said, Howard, what is wrong? (Howard was an elderly criminal defense lawyer who the NY TIMES once said of... he is the Sam Spade of lawyers, the only hint of a rug in his linolium clad office is the cheep one on his head!) Well Howard sais, Some Bastard stole my car! My new car!, What's the matter, I asked, he repeted himself... so what's WRONG?! Obviously bisniness is good! We have to worry when folks STOP stealing cars, then you'll never get another! I hope you had the forsight to leave your card on the dashboard! Well Howard got a smile out of that, I hope you do!
Hope they found both the car and the work. Cheers Larry

The extra work and the extra walk will, both, do you good.

Finally, you have something to sing about....and tide you through the winter

The kids don't need all that assessment crap anyway...let them just be kids. Maybe it was one of the parents trying to recover your dossier on their child? I'd do it for my kid.

Swear me - no. The car was found this morning not five minutes from here. The school work was not in it and all the contents had been scattered and anything of value however small taken. The ignition is a mess and the window broken but otherwise no obvious damage. Finger print people are going to look at it this afternoon and then repairs can get underway. I agree that all the assessment is unnecessary but sadly we are obliged to do it and having a boook recording a childs progress from Nursery to High School can be nice especially since it is usually given back to the child's parents when they move on so they get to see how well their child has come on.

From bitter experience I can guess how you're feeling Jane. Why do they destroy the things that will take so long to replace (if the records etc can be replaced that is), and leave you with the replaceable?
At least your transport is back.

Dagnabit... your thieves came and stole my hubcaps last night! Bet I won't find them down the street like you did!

I'd rather they stole the whole car, now I gotta mess with replacing them. Easier just to buy some than to file a police report so that the insurance will pay for it.

Er... sound like one of those nursery school kids didn't want his parents to look at his report card :)

Knowing the activities of some nursery/infant children ... they probably stole it themselves.
Two six year olds at my last school were caught breaking into cars.

What a dreadful thing to happen!! I KNOW how much work goes into those ....... assessments, and the trouble it can cause when even one goes missing - who would want them anyway?

Hope everyone is getting over being poorly and that this hasn't made you too ill to cope.

Had my car nicked in Brum many years ago, after taking Mrs P to see "Cats" for a brithday treat. Spent ages sitting in the Police Station with our arms full of flowers ...

The car had "Two litre diesel engine" written across the back in big letters, in that funny shorthand manufacturers use ("20iD", or the like), so it's maybe not surprising.

Of course, my spare specs, walking boots, waterproofs and a host of other uninsured things went with it. The only ray of sunshine was that I was working for the insurance firm that it was insured with, so I got the money in a fortnight with no quibbles.
