From: Barbara Shaw Just got the following message from one of the organizers of the NOMAD festival, which was held this past weekend: Hello all, I this afternoon recieved an email from Sandy Paton. When they opened their cash box today they found that all of the checks, credit card reciepts and most of the cash was gone (a few 20's were missed). For Folk Legacy this loss is a disaster. If you know anyone who made a purchase at folk legacy this weekend please contact them so that stop payments can be placed on any checks, credit cards etc, and replacements issued. Sandy and Caroline have supported our passion for a long time, they now need us. |

I just spoke to Sandy, they found the credit slips and checks stuffed into the side of a plastic CD carrier. They are out a considerable amount of cash, but no where near the amount that was taken in as checks or charges. |

The recovery of the credit card slips and checks reduces the loss considerably. As Marc Horowitz put it: thank God for considerate thieves. Whoever grabbed the loot out of the cash box, kept the cash (except for the wee bit he/she failed to grasp), but was thoughtful enough to return with the non-negotiable junk anad sneak it into the side of a plastic bin containing such things as masking tape, an extra calculator, my index of songs on Folk-Legacy records (compiled by Mudcatter Karen K) and some other miscellaneous stuff. All we are out is a few hundred dollars in tens and twenties. We can live with that. Karen, who was helping us at the booth, in her wisdom, had carefully slipped a $50 bill and a $100 bill under a calculator in the bottom of the cash box to prevent our accidentally giving them to someone when making change. Those two bills were still there. Good thinking, Karen -- thanks! Again, thanks to all of you for your concern. 'Tain't nearly as bad as it appeared to be at first. Whew! Sandy |

Sandy, you're damn lucky that it was only money as there are some seedy folks out there anymore and Bob's Finnish reference reminds me of Emos Laer Parc, a Scandanavian Violin maker in upstate New York who apprenticed in Germany and had a business in N.Y. building a very high dollar and high quality violin. Parc was killed by one of his customers about 5 years ago. Actually, it was the father of a young man who was known to be an up and coming violinist. They had sought out Parc and he made them a very custom model which by all reports was exceptional. The boy was quite satisfied I guess but about a year later he failed to take a first place in a junior competition in New York City. Evidently the father couldn't believe this was any fault of the boy and blamed it instead on the violin. The father and son went to Parc's shop on numerous occasions and although the boy was polite according to others who witnessed these scenes, the father was adamant that Parc's fiddle had been the kid's undoing and that he should have purchased one of the better known European models. Parc offered to make any adjustments the son might want, but refused to refund the money. I guess he had several well known violinists play the instrument and they all confirmed it's quality and sound. The final meeting came one night when the father showed up unexpectedly and shot Parc with a .357.....in front of witnesses. The trial was pretty quick and the guy got a life sentence for Second Degree Murder as a result of domestic violins. Sorry.......(Emos Laer Parc = some real crap) Spaw (I'd send some money but I'm as broke as $10.00 Ford and the only thing I can do is throw in a bit of levity....Glad it wasn't any worse Folk Fogey!!!) |

That reminds me of a friend of mine who was on an Arctic expedition that went seriously wrong, and from frostbite he lost a couple of toes off his right foot, which, since he was an athlete of sorts, made him very unhappy, hobbling around. He brooded over the whole screwed up expedition for awhile, and started making threatening phone calls to the leader of the expedition, and writing letters to the press, and all sorts of things, and then one day hobbled up onto the doorstep of the leader of the expedition, knocked on the door, and shot him dead. The fact that people can and do steal from each other reminds us of the evil of which we are all capable. The fact that it happened to wonderful people like the Patons shows how vulnerable we all are. Maybe we can turn this into a good thing by making this a Folk Legacy holiday season. A "pro" would have sold the credit card numbers and expiration dates to some of the really bad guys out on the street. The fact that they were considerate enough to return what they couldn't easily spend makes me think they were just local kids with enough gall to stick a hand into the cash box when no one was looking. It's easy to be distracted when turned away from the table to chat or exchange big hugs with friends. Again, thanks for your kind concern, good people. We're getting over the initial shock with no trouble, since the loss was really quite minimal, compared to what it might have been. Keep the faith! Sandy |
