29 Oct 02 - 04:59 PM (#813904) Subject: Lyr Add: DANCING IN KYLE From: bill kennedy DANCING IN KYLE When the sun has gone down on the dark western islands Our work is all done for a while. Then we gather together whatever the weather And drive to the dancing in Kyle Now there's Marie and Duncan and Morag and Callum Fiona and Kenna and Dawn And were driving from Dornie Glenelg and Killinen And laughing as we race along. 2. Now Rory will sing of the beauties of Isley And Seamus of Stornaway's isle And the finest of dancers will show us the lancers When we go to the dancing in Kyle Theres the swirl o the kilt and the skirl o the pipes And Ken Masons accordion band And its ah for the eightsome and ah for the jig And the dashing white seargent is grand. 3. Soon the dawn will be showing the great mountains glowing And we must drive many a mile But we'll leave Inverinate and Ardelve and Dornie Next time that there's dancing in Kyle And we'll laugh and we'll sing and we'll hueoch and we'll swing And we'll set to our partners in style For there's nothing so grand in the whole |

I think the tune is the same as westerning home. |
30 Oct 02 - 03:58 AM (#814197) Subject: Lyr Add: BONNIE STRATHYRE From: Scabby Douglas There's a bit missing off the end of the lyrics above.. For there's nothing so grand in the whole of the land As to drive to the dancing in Kyle. Is this the other one? BONNIE STRATHYRE There's meadows in Lanark and mountains in Skye, And pastures in Hielands and Lowlands forbye; But there's nae greater luck that the heart could desire Than to herd the fine cattle in bonnie Strathyre. O' it's up in the morn and awa' to the hill, When the lang simmer days are sae warm and sae still, Till the peak O' Ben Vorlich is girdled wi' fire, And the evenin' fa's gently on bonnie Strathyre. Then there's mirth in the sheiling and love in my breast, When the sun is gane doun and the kye are at rest; For there's mony a prince wad be proud to aspire To my winsome wee Maggie, the pride O' Strathyre. Her lips are like rowans in ripe simmer seen, And mild as the starlicht the glint o' her e'en; Far sweeter her breath than the scent o' the briar, And her voice is sweet music in bonnie Strathyre. Set Flora by Colin, and Maggie by me, And we'll dance to the pipes swellin' loudly and free, Till the moon in the heavens climbing higher and higher Bids us sleep on fresh brackens in bonnie Strathyre. Though some in the touns o' the Lowlands seek fame, And some will gang sodgerin' far from their hame; Yet I'll aye herd my cattle, and bigg my ain byre, And love my ain Maggie in bonnie Strathyre. Cheers Steven |
30 Oct 02 - 04:18 AM (#814201) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dancing in Kyle From: GUEST,Boab Kyle is one of the ancient districts of Ayrshire. From North to South the divisions were Cunninghame, Kyle and Carrick. There is a suggestion [ unlikely, in my opinion--] that the famous "Old King Cole"was actually king of Kyle. And additional claim to fame is provided by "There was a Lad was born in Kyle, o' whatna day or whatna style----" ---a Lad ca'ed Rabbie Burns. Oh, yes----and Me, too! |

30 Oct 02 - 04:24 AM (#814204) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dancing in Kyle From: GUEST,Boab Oops!! Ignore the non-event above.... Just a wee aside on the "There was a lad" mentioned in my posting. This is an autobiographical piece by Burns, and in contrast to the ditty normally tacked on to his words, Burns himself commends the tune "Dainty Davie". A rare auld sang! |
30 Oct 02 - 07:03 AM (#814256) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dancing in Kyle From: Ferrara The lyrics posted above have Irish names for the most part, but I know I heard a version of this at a folk music evening in Pitlochry (sp.?), near Blair, in Scotland. The only phrase I remember went, "and go down to the dancing at Kyle." Slightly different from the above. Oh, I would love to hear it again. It was part of a wonderful, rewarding day for me. Let's see.... 1968, I think.... I assumed it referred to Kyle of Lochalsh, just because that was the only Kyle I was familiar with. Can't remember how close it was to Blair/Pitlochry. Possibly there are both Scottish and Irish variants? Rita F |

My parents often tell me the story of when it was composed, which was done during an evening out at the dancing. They are also mentioned in the song by name as they were part of the crowd. |
