If you've got something to pass on that you think might inform/amuse Mudcatters who have a BS filter set up. And we're instructed to use the BS prefix for non musical posts, how do you label your posting in order to avoid getting PMs asking you to follow the party line?

Giok, if they have the filters set up, I'll trust that they know what they want and don't want to read any BS no matter how good.

It just reminds of the bigots in the town I was born in. One half wouldn't listen to anything that they considered part of the culture of the opposition. Sure a lot of the BS threads are just that, but I reiterate, how do you label non musical postings?

I would imagine that one would simply post a thread without the BS designation or any other and let the chips fall. If one had the nerve. Reminds me of some of the forwarded email I get- some people are very sure that others want to read every bit of drivel that gets sent around. And of course, sometimes it isn't drivel. Ya can't win.

Well I did put a posting out without the BS prefix, and received a managerial slap on the wrist, via a PM. Could it be because of the subject matter of my posting. i.e. Not that it was non musical, but that someone objected to the subject matter?

Maybe I'm naturally oversensitive, or maybe someone just slipped me decaf coffee this morning, but feelings of inferiority are characteristic of the most contemptible lot of rascals I've ever seen. For the sake of review, people who use the BS filter appear to believe that the Universe belongs to them by right. That claim illustrates a serious reasoning fallacy, one that is pandemic in their insults. Then again, as our society continues to unravel, more and more people will be grasping for straws, grasping for something to hold onto, grasping for something that promises to give them the sense of security and certainty that they so desperately need. These are the kinds of people that people who use the BS filter prey upon. If they continue to utilize questionable and illegal forum-dominating techniques, the result can be a tone-deafness, a cluelessness, on matters that are at the center of experience for vast segments of the population. I heard through the grapevine that people who use the BS filter's spout language which is turgid and incomprehensible. Whether or not this rumor is true, they think that all major world powers are controlled by a covert group of "insiders". However, if self-absorbed rotters really believed in equality, they wouldn't make mountains out of molehills.

When asked to mend their ways, people who use the BS filter will give other people a wink and a smile, but when the wheels begin to turn, it's business as usual. No matter what else we do, our first move must be to educate everyone about how this is typical of the kind of noise they enjoy making. That's the first step: education. Education alone is not enough, of course. We must also announce that we may need to picket, demonstrate, march, or strike to stop people who use the BS filter before they can make human life negligible and cheap.

Defeatism is not merely an attack on our moral fiber. It is also a politically motivated attack on knowledge. Curiously, people who use the BS filter espouse philosophies which will have serious consequences -- very serious consequences. And we ought to begin doing something about that. I can't stress this enough, but people who use the BS filter try to make the rest of us think the way they want us to think, not by showing us evidence and reasoning with us, but by understanding how to push our emotional buttons. I'd like to finish with a quote from a private e-mail message sent to me by a close friend of mine: "The struggle to make the world safe for democracy takes center stage these days, both locally and nationwide, and that will not be altered by incontinent persons who got about with live parrots perched on their shoulders and recite doggerel of a nihilistic nature while posturing as patriots!".

Little Hawk, your post to be based on knowing a) who uses the BS filter, and b) what their attitudes to life are.

Please quote some examples of BS filter users and justify that these "people who use the BS filter appear to believe that the Universe belongs to them by right.

If Jesus Christ were to come down to Earth right this second and tell you that the end of the world is five minutes away and you were to post that information to the forum with no prefix, someone would get pissed off because it's a non-musical thread so it's supposed to be labelled BS.

Har! Har! GUEST at 7:20 PM, you gotta be kidding, right? Don't tempt me. I bet you are one of those incontinent blokes wot stumbles around the streets of Kingston upon Hull after closing time wif a parrot perched on 'is left shoulder, muttering vague obscenities and sodomizing mailboxes, right? I mean you with the muttered obscenities, not the parrot...parrots never mutter obscenities, they yells 'em out for all to hear plainly.

If you need any more help on interpreting my pro-BS prose, simply phone Dail-a-Stereotype at 1-800-SOD-OFFF. They are a very helpful lot, and can surely steer you in the right direction more easily than I can.

A managerial note communicating policy is not necessarily a slap on the wrist or any other sensitive body part. Might you have reacted defensively?

So, Giok asks how he can post non-music information for people who have chosen not to receive non-music information.
I think I'll choose not to answer that question.

Here's the message I sent to Giok and a couple of others:
Hi, Giok - please remember to use the "BS" designation for non-music threads.
Thanks.
-Joe Offer-
If that sort of message causes offense, I make no apology.
As for the long list of threads somebody questioned - all but one had to do with music, and I renamed the one to "BS." The filter can be used to omit non-music threads, but the actual BS filter is a box you check on the Membership form.

Not offended by the communication Joe, just by the creeping in of rules and regs on a forum which is avowedly open. If you remember the discussions we had about guest postings not so long ago, it was stated then, that it would be unfair to restrict one sections right to go anonymous, and post thier thoughts without fear of identification.
As you will read on some of my posts I don't believe in the anonymous route, and am willing to stand by my posts, and be counted. I have used the BS designation, and will continue to do so when I feel it is appropriate.

Giok, why not look on the "BS" designation as a tool for organization or sorting, not as a rule/regulation? Same with our request that people limit the number of new threads by posting to existing threads on the same subject. There are over 53,000 threads in the Mudcat database, and over 817,000 messages. Amidst those threads and messages is some very valuable music information, as well as some personal interaction that is very valuable and memorable to a number of people. Somehow, we have to organize that information so that people can find it.

People who come here to do music research don't want to spend time reading about you beloved cat's toothache, no matter how painful that toothache may be to you and your cat. That's why we ask people to use the "BS" designation for non-music threads. We don't want to be rigid about controlling it, but the general idea is that non-music stuff should be labeled BS.

As always, there is very little regulation of the content of the messages that you post. The message titles and thread structure are the way we organize and index those messages so that they can be useful to people. At times, we have to manipulate and control that structure.

Thanks.

It doesn't take much ingenuity to write a post in a way that is both musically relevant and allows you to bring in any topic you want. If need be you can always write a song about it, if there isn't one already.

And of course, anyone who wishes to crumble their cookie and come in as a GUEST, can still add a pseudonym to their posts, without in any way compromising their anonymity. And the reason they might choose to do so would be for the convenience of other people, and to avoid confusion with other GUESTS in the course of a thread. If they have any regard for the convenience of other people that is.

As do I, Little Hawk!

While not a life-long Springsteen fan, I had the opportunity to meet him a few years back when I arranged for a group of farmworkers to have backstage passes for his Tampa concet. That's when I learned of RMAS (rec.music.artists.springsteen). When I checked it out, it turned out to be a very diverse group, a number of whom are also folkies who referred me to the Grateful Dead connection to "I Bid You Goodnight." But that's another thread.

The connection to THIS thread is that I was really confused by lots of RMAS postings that began with "NBC," and had nothing to do with radio or TV programming. I finally got up the nerve to post the question (not having read the FAQ, of course!) and a few very patient members responded that it meant "No Bruce Content." They also use "LBC" when posts contain Little Bruce Content.

I haven't the time or inclination to study the matter, but is it possible that most newsgroups dedicated to a specific subject or person have their own "BS"/"NBC" flags to alert members to off-topic postings? It seems to me that just having the BS prefix permits members the option of looking at those thread titles and deciding whether or not to read them. If members are determined that they do not want to read the flagged postings, and filter them out without even scanning them, then so be it. They choose to lose topics not related to music, however valuable they might be. M.
