02 Nov 02 - 04:56 PM (#817063) Subject: RE: American Folk Songs for Kids From: GUEST,Guest Franz Mike and Peggy Seeger did a recoring for Rounder Records of their mother's "American Folk Songs for Children", mostly play-party songs. I have it on vinyl, about 20 years old (maybe more): Rounder 8001/8002/8003. 94 songs. There's a book that goes withit but I don't know who published it. Maybe Rounder has reissued this. |
02 Nov 02 - 05:10 PM (#817068) Subject: RE: American Folk Songs for Kids From: Willie-O Jerry Garcia & David Grisman "Not For Kids Only". Great fun and of course great picking from these two. Roll On, Little Dogies by Meghan Merker --book and cassette, Songs and Activities for Young Cowpokes. Highly recommended, the recording is by the famed Bunkhouse Orchestra of which Meghan is a member. |
02 Nov 02 - 05:24 PM (#817072) Subject: RE: American Folk Songs for Kids From: Joe Offer The Ruth Crawford Seeger book, American Folk Songs for Children (1948), is still in print. Her children, Mike and Peggy Seeger, recorded a Rounder 2-CD set with the same title, covering every single song in the book. Mike and Peggy also recorded Animal Folk Songs for Children, and American Folk Songs for Christmas, but their mother's books with those titles are out of print. The recordings are downright wonderful. The books are geared to younger kids, maybe age 10 and under. -Joe Offer- |

03 Nov 02 - 02:12 AM (#817276) Subject: RE: American Folk Songs for Kids From: Joe Offer I'd agree with Sorcha - the "Wee Sing" series of songbooks/recordings are excellent. I also like to collect grammar school music textbooks. I get them at library book sales for a buck or less, and some are excellent. There are several out-of-print Fireside songbooks that are very good, with nice illustrations. If you go to used booksellers like www.bookfinder.com, enter fireside songs and a nice selection should turn up. -Joe Offer- |
