Lyr Req: Can't Be Satisfied (Muddy Waters)

Subject: Lyrics to Muddy's 'Can't Be Satisfied'
From: Mark Brown

I'm looking for the lyrics to what I think is called Can't Be Satisfied by Muddy Waters. The chorus is something like, "But I just can't be satisfied, I just can't keep from cryin'"

Thanks guys&gals

You mean this one? This is a from fairly recent version, recorded in the 70's or 80's with Johnny Winter on accoustic (probably National or Dobro) slide guitar, but Muddy did it much earlier also. I've got a guitar tab of that in a book by Woody Mann, it might have more lyrics. I'll check tonight.

Meanwhile, enjoy:

TROUBLED
Muddy Waters

Well I'm goin' away today,
Won't be back no more,
Goin' back down south,
Child don't you wanna go?

Chorus:
Woman I'm troubled
I be all worried in mind.
Well you know I just can't be satisfied,
And I just can't keep from cryin'.

Yeah, I know my little ol' baby,
She gonna jump and shout,
When that ol' train be late, boys,
Lord, 'n I come walkin' out.

Well, all in my sleep,
Hear my doorbell ring,
Lookin' for my woman, boy
I didn't see a doggone thing

(repeat 2nd verse)

Here is the version from the book. I haven't heard the early recording so I can't say whether Woody Mann "standardized" the grammar (except for the title) or not.

I BE'S TROUBLED
Muddy Waters (Copyright 1959, 1987)
From The Anthology of Blues Guitar, by Woody Mann (Copyright 1993)

Well, I feel tomorrow
like I feel today,
I'm goin' pack my suitcase
(and) make my getaway,

Chorus:
Lord, I'm troubled,
I'm all worried now,
And I never been satisfied,
And I just can't keep from cryin'.

Yeah, I know my little old babe,
she gonna jump and shout,
That old train ... girl,
and I come walkin' out,
(chorus)

Yeah, I know somebody,
some been talkin' to you,
I don't need no tellin' girl,
I can watch the way you do,
(chorus)

Yeah, now, goodbye babe,
got no more to say,
Just like I been tellin' you, girl,
You gonna have to leave my bed,
(chorus)

Dear jon,

No, it was definitely the first one but there was another verse. I was about to write you what I could understand of that verse and see if you could figure out the rest but while listening to it...I FIGURED IT OUT!! Aren't you proud? I am. I've been trying to figure it out for ever, like years, mind you I haven't been REALLY trying but still... I think I figured it out now because I've been working on listening so much and becoming more familiar with blues lingo and common themes and phrases. Today, I am your prodigy!

Aaaaaaanyway, in case anybody else gives a crap here it is

Well I feel like snappin' This pistol in your face I'm gonna let some graveyard lord, be your restin' place.

I think. Mark Brown

Same title, but not very closely related to Waters' song:

I CAN'T BE SATISFIED
As recorded by Big Bill Broonzy, 1930

1. Now listen here, baby; tell you what I want you to do:
I want you to treat me, mama, like I do you.
Lord, I can't be satisfied,
And I can't be satisfied,
And I can't mistreat you, not to please nobody's mind.

2. I love my ... [pause] tell you the reason why.
My baby got somethin' that satisfies my mind.
Lord, I can't be satisfied,
And I can't be satisfied,
And I can't mistreat her, not to please nobody's mind.

3. Lord, starvation's in my kitchen, rent sign on my door.
Good girl told me she can't use me no more.
Now, and I can't be satisfied,
And I can't be satisfied,
And I can't mistreat her, not to please nobody's mind.

4. I'm leakin' out the heart, bleedin' out the nose.
Good girl told me she can't use me no more.
Now and I can't be satisfied,
And I can't be satisfied,
And I can't mistreat her, not to please nobody's mind.

5. Got on my high-cut stockin's, and my low-cut shoes.
Mama and I ain't bettin' and I sure can't lose.
Oh, I can't be satisfied,
And I can't be satisfied,
And I can't mistreat that woman, not to please nobody's mind.

6. Now looka here, boys; ain't this rich?
I got to pay my wife for ever'thing I gets.
Lord, I can't be satisfied
And I can't be satisfied
And I can't mistreat her, not to please nobody's mind.

This folk song was collected by Howard Odum by 1908 and published by him as "Knife-Song":

"... 'Fo' long, honey, 'fo' long, honey,
'Fo' long, honey, 'fo' long, honey,
L-a-w-d, la-w-d, la-w-d!

... I hate to hear my honey call my name,
Call me so lonesome an' so sad.
L-a-w-d, l-a-w-d, l-a-w-d!

I got de blues an' can't be satisfied,
Brown-skin woman cause of it all.
L-a-w-d, l-a-w-d, l-a-w-d!

That woman will be the death o' me,
Some girl will be the death o' me.
L-a-w-d, l-a-w-d, l-a-w-d! ..."

Odum also collected a song with related, AAAB lyrics by 1908:

"So she laid in jail back to de wall
So she laid in jail back to de wall
So she laid in jail back to de wall
Dis brown-skin man cause of it all."

Independently, a Mr. Aldrich collected these folk lines in 1909:

"I laid in jail, back to the wall
Brown skin gal cause of it all
I've got the blues; I'm too damn mean to talk
A brown skin woman make a bull-dog break his chain"

John Hurt, who was 17 years old in 1909, recorded a "Got The Blues, Can't Be Satisfied."

Franklin Seals included "I got the blues, can't be satisfied today" in his "Baby Seals Blues," published in August, 1912 -- before Handy published his first blues.

Another popular subject in the earliest known blues lyrics, paralleling not being satisfied, was crying. Butler May was quoted as singing these lyrics as of early 1914: "I got the blues but I ain't going to cry." The earliest published blues song had been two years before that, "The Blues (But I'm Too Blamed Mean To Cry)" by Smith and Brymn. Years before that, Odum had collected "I got the blues but too damn mean to cry."

Apparently Waters recorded this several times, and the lyrics vary. On Spotify, it is easiest to distinguish them by their timings. This version appears on several anthologies.

I CAN'T BE SATISFIED (2:41)
As recorded by Muddy Waters

1. Well, I'm goin' away to leave; won't be back no mo'.
Goin' back down south, child; don't you want to go?
Woman, I'm troubled; I be all worried in mind.
Well, babe, I just can't be satisfied, and I just can't keep from cryin'.

2. Well, I feel like snappin' a pistol in your face.
I'm 'on let some graveyard, Lord, be her restin' place.
Woman, I'm troubled; I be all worried in mind.
Well, babe, I can't never be satisfied, and I just can't keep from cryin'.

3. Well now, all in my sleep, hear my doorbell ring,
Lookin' for my baby; I didn't see not a doggone thing.
Woman, I was troubled; I was all worried in mind.
Well, honey, I could never be satisfied, and I just couldn't keep from cryin'.

4. Well, I know my little ol' babe, she gon' jump and shout.
That old train be late, man, Lord, and I come walkin' out.
I be troubled; I be all worried in mind.
Well, honey, ain't no way in the world for me to be satisfied, and I just can't keep from cryin'.

This song was first recorded under the "I Be's Troubled" title, in 1941 with acoustic guitar for the Library Of Congress. When Lomax met him, Muddy was poor but owned a few records, including ones by the bluesman Peetie Wheatstraw and the jazzman Jay McShann (whose band included the bebopper Charlie Parker), he said he considered Fats Waller his favorite radio star, and he was playing in a fiddle band: waltzes, blues, and whatever else dancers at the gigs wanted. He told Library of Congress researchers that the tunes he knew included "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "I Ain't Got Nobody," "Dinah," "Deep In The Heart Of Texas," "Darktown Strutters' Ball," and "Red Sails In The Sunset." He said the first song he had learned to play on the guitar was Leroy Carr's "How Long How Long Blues." "I Be Bound To Write To You" is another recorded acoustic version of "I Be's Troubled" from before Aristocrat.

Muddy got his first electric guitar, a gift from an uncle, in about 1945. Lomax wrote in 1942 that Muddy had written "I Be's Troubled" while fixing a tire, but he was apparently being sloppy, Muddy having actually told him that he wrote "Country Blues" in 1938 while fixing a tire, and wrote "I Be's Troubled" while walking down a road.
