BS: Fellowship of the Ring, extended version

Some hapless clerk at a local electric-everything store inadvertantly put out the videotapes a week early, so I got one. Swe-e-e-t. Seamless craftsmanship shows through the whole thing. That big fight scene in the Mines of Moria makes so much more sense, and flows so much more smoothly. Lots of other niftys, too. Happy, happy fox.

It was the videocasette. I'm planning to pamper myself with the DVD next week, Argonath bookends and all.

Our band is getting together to watch the DVD as soon as it arrives next week. The Italian fiddle player is making calzones and she has a big screen tv with all the latest in sound system.

My son saved all his yardwork money to pre-order the DVD. If you can make it to Montana, Hollofox, we'll save a seat and a calzone for you.

Since we don't own a DVD player, I thought it was not very wise for him to get the DVD, but there seems to be plenty of people who do have DVD players who want to invite us over.

You got the vid in September, and in it was a book of coupons... if you'd even glanced at them, you would have seen that one of them was a coupon for 10 or 20 bucks off the price of the Special Edition released in November... It contains another 45 or so minutes of footage (Cause you know the kind of people who read fantasy are EXACTLY the sort of people who need to be ENCOURAGED to sit down more...) that was cut from the theatrical release...

I mean, in the circles I move in, the Special Edition release is common knowledge...

Sorry, Clinton. I appreciate the information, given in your usual superficially polite manner, but there were no coupons with the video I received.

I seriously considered waiting until the special edition came out, but I couldn't. Now, I'm torn. How do I get to see the extra footage without paying more money?
Maybe I can talk the library into buying it...

If the library won't buy it, and you don't want to come and visit one of us reckless hedonists, you can wait a few weeks until the video stores sell off their pre-viewed extra copies.

My daughter graciously accepted the original video as a gift from her grandmother- she somehow feels that since she didn't pay for it herself, she is justified in buying the extended version! I hope she's been saving her pennies (if she finishes stacking the wood pile today she'll be well on the way to buying it- but not a penny do I give her till it's done *evil cackle*).

Does Gimli get his sub-plot from the book get restored? The removal of that was my main complaint against the film.

At some point no doubt they'll put the extended version out in the cinema, which is where you need to see films. Seeing them on the box is pleasant enough, but it just doesn't compare. You never get sucked into the action and forget the world around you in the same way.

Yeah, McGrath, but at home it's a shorter trip to the toilet (or haven't you turned 60 yet?) - and the refreshment stand at the movieplex doesn't carry Maker's Mark.

"At some point no doubt they'll put the extended version out in the cinema"

Nope... that's not gonna happen... New Line hasn't liscenced it for theatres, and the show no desire to do so... Which is good, casue the theatrical release was more than long enough to sit in the average theatre seat...

"given in your usual superficially polite manner"

Who was trying to even be superficially polite?!?! Everybody I know who bought it got a coupon book... DVD or VHS... Maybe it was a Blockbuster thing?? No... I recall seeing the same packaging on them at Walmart... so maybe it's a Canadian thing? I donno... suffice to say... The information was out there that a special edition was coming out... if you didn't go looking for it, don't sound so surprised...

And well, it's not like we're talking about a LOT of money here... the innitial VHS was what 20 some bucks? This one on VHS is gonna be 60-80 unless ya go for the Limited Release Special Edition.. the one with the bookends and such... that's gonna run ya 90-110 bucks or so...   Not exactly breaking the bank...

Like I said, I have access to free movie rentals, so I'll get it for free when it comes out... and I'll buy the HUGE after-the-movies-are-all-done set... Then I'll strap my butt to the sofa and watch it ALL in one sitting!!!

Hehe!

Oh ya... BTW... Faramir sucks...

,-)

Sooner or later they always seem to put out "directors cuts" of big films when they reckon everybody has seen the film, as a way of getting them to see it again.

As for whiskey, Midchuck, carry a flask. (And if you sit in the back row the bog's probably no further than it would be at home.)

Faramir? Well, from the net, David Welham looks right. We'll see. I suspect my ideas about Tolkien might differ somewhat from Clinton's anyway.

Well if they didn't serve diuretics in containers that are bucket, vat or something you could bath a baby elephant in, the distance to the loo wouldn't be so important. However they rely on this so that after drinking the entire contents of the bucket, you then need to pee halfway through the film. Cunningly placing the only working toilets at the farthest possible point without actually leaving the cinema, makes you take enough time out of the film to miss the denoument, so you HAVE to come again or buy the DVD/Vid.

As I said, sit in the back row if you want to get to the bog in a hurry. Back home in my house you'd have to go upstairs, signifucantly further.

I think it's a good idea to keep off the soft drinks. They rot your teeth and they rot your brain.

I used to be 60.

Looking forward to the film, anyway. But I'll make sure to get to performances where there aren't masses of kids, who are the main drawback to cinemas.

It was specifically because of Lord of the Rings, that I was able to convince Mister that we NEEDED a DVD player. Now he has gone DVD nuts! He's price checking for the extended version to see who has the best buy. We'll probably get it from Media Play because I'm in the points club.

You can buy a decent basic DVD player now for under $100. I highly recommend it.

In a couple of years the DVD format is gonna changed, and players will become much better than they are today... Something about changing the colour of the laser that reads the info or something...

Fortunatly, they are going to be backwards compatable, so all the dvds you currently own will play in them...

Myself, when DVD recorders are more available and I can dump my vhs pos completely, THEN I'll get a dedicated DVD player... for now, my ps2 makes a GREAT dvd player...

Saw it last night (Got the collectors one, Argonath and all!). Well worth it if only for the extended introduction to Hobbits. The fight scenes seemed to be better somehow as well and some of the dialogue made more sense.

Read Pratchetts 'Night Watch' over the weekend and am going seeing Chamber of Secrets on Friday. Anything else new I can do in between?

McGrath, what sub-plot about Gimli were you referring to ?

I can only think of either the fact that he wanted to find out what happened to the Dwarfs who went back to Moria, or that he was smitten by Galadriel's beauty both of which I thought were covered.

My main regret was that one of my favourite characters, Tom Bombadil had been completely cut out.

McGrath: "Sooner or later they always seem to put out "directors cuts" of big films when they reckon everybody has seen the film, as a way of getting them to see it again."

Not really. Theatrical "Director's Cuts" are extremely rare in the film industry. This is because the studios already rejected the "Director's Cut" on the grounds that it would not be popular. The only times you get director's cuts released in theaters is when the director has a sharp rise in political power in Hollywood, eg. Spielberg with Close Encounters. Other than that, that's how Hollywood perceives DVDs--a way to sell the footage they decided wasn't good enough for the big screen!

One thing that does tend to happen is "special editions," when the special effects are updated with new technology. Even THOSE rarely make it to theaters.

Subject: RE: BS: Fellowship of the Ring, extended version
From: McGrath of Harlow

There aren't that many films where its virtually true that everybody will have seen them, Nerd, and a high proportion can be expected to come again for an extended version. I'd say this is one of them.

Gimli? What I mean is the whole relationship between Gimli and Legolas, their mutual antagonism growing into friendship, together with Gimli's being smitten with Galadriel courtly love style, which is another side of his changing understanding of the elves all of which is virtually removed, and the balance is spoiled. It's an important theme in the book, the relationship between the different peoples of Middle Earth. I gather that the DVD does actually have some of this back, and I look forward to seeing it some time.

Yeah, Tom Bombadil and Goldberry - and all the stuff associated with it are a sad loss. But really to get it all in they'd have needed to make the film twice as long, with a separate film for each of the books - and with two books in each volume that would have been rather a project. (The Gimli Legolas stuff in contrast only really needs a couple of scenes and no special effects.)

Bought the DVD for my kids. I haven't seen it yet but they say it is really great! Fills in some things.

If anyone is interested, my group has an mp3 on our website of an original song called, "Lookin' for Tom Bombadil".

It was inspired by the movie's lack of the character.
