New Line hasn't liscenced it for theatres, and the show no desire to do so... Which is good, casue the theatrical release was more than long enough to sit in the average theatre seat... Maybe it was a Blockbuster thing?? No... I recall seeing the same packaging on them at Walmart... so maybe it's a Canadian thing? I donno... suffice to say... The information was out there that a special edition was coming out... if you didn't go looking for it, don't sound so surprised... And well, it's not like we're talking about a LOT of money here... the innitial VHS was what 20 some bucks? This one on VHS is gonna be 60-80 unless ya go for the Limited Release Special Edition.. the one with the bookends and such... that's gonna run ya 90-110 bucks or so... Not exactly breaking the bank... Like I said, I have access to free movie rentals, so I'll get it for free when it comes out... and I'll buy the HUGE after-the-movies-are-all-done set... However they rely on this so that after drinking the entire contents of the bucket, you then need to pee halfway through the film. Cunningly placing the only working toilets at the farthest possible point without actually leaving the cinema, makes you take enough time out of the film to miss the denoument, so you HAVE to come again or buy the DVD/Vid. Something about changing the colour of the laser that reads the info or something... Fortunatly, they are going to be backwards compatable, so all the dvds you currently own will play in them... Myself, when DVD recorders are more available and I can dump my vhs pos completely, THEN I'll get a dedicated DVD player... for now, my ps2 makes a GREAT dvd player... ;-) |

Not really. Theatrical "Director's Cuts" are extremely rare in the film industry. This is because the studios already rejected the "Director's Cut" on the grounds that it would not be popular. The only times you get director's cuts released in theaters is when the director has a sharp rise in political power in Hollywood, eg. Spielberg with Close Encounters. Other than that, that's how Hollywood perceives DVDs--a way to sell the footage they decided wasn't good enough for the big screen! One thing that does tend to happen is "special editions," when the special effects are updated with new technology. Even THOSE rarely make it to theaters. |

I'd say this is one of them. Gimli? What I mean is the whole relationship between Gimli and Legolas, their mutual antagonism growing into friendship, together with Gimli's being smitten with Galadriel courtly love style, which is another side of his changing understanding of the elves all of which is virtually removed, and the balance is spoiled. It's an important theme in the book, the relationship between the different peoples of Middle Earth. I gather that the DVD does actually have some of this back, and I look forward to seeing it some time. Yeah, Tom Bombadil and Goldberry - and all the stuff associated with it are a sad loss. But really to get it all in they'd have needed to make the film twice as long, with a separate film for each of the books - and with two books in each volume that would have been rather a project. (The Gimli Legolas stuff in contrast only really needs a couple of scenes and no special effects.) |
