09 Nov 02 - 10:33 AM (#822215) Subject: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) I went to a dance camp this summer, and "learned" a tune on the dulcimer (I put "learned" in quotes, because the tunes I "learn" this way rarely stay with me after the event!)--called "Shanghai Rooster." Thought I'd just go look it up on the 'net later--but, I can't find ANY abc files or sheet music...I can't even find a midi! (I'm usually pretty good at finding things I want, too.) I *did,* however, find evidence of it being recorded a few times by various folks--so I know it DOES exist. Anybody know this tune? Anybody have an abc file, or a page to post some music? I'd really appreciate it... denise:^) |
09 Nov 02 - 10:38 AM (#822218) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) I'll add that the sources I found that listed the title on a recording (generally, recordings that aren't readily available) listed the composer as, "Dusty Rhodes." Don't know if that'll help anyone or not... denise:^) |

09 Nov 02 - 01:37 PM (#822312) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) Thanks, Reggie; I was hoping that *someone* had an abc file they could share. It's funny that this tune is out there (some of the folks in the other thread seem to be talking about a 'song' instead of a 'tune...'), and there is NO source for music! Someone's got to have it... denise:^) |

10 Nov 02 - 12:33 PM (#822737) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: BanjoRay Dave Bing the West Virginia fiddler taught a bunch of us the fiddle tune "Shanghai", from the Hammons Family, at a workshop in Gainsborough, UK this weekend. Could this be the one? It's extremely crooked and hard to get your head round. Cheers Ray |
11 Nov 02 - 11:17 AM (#823374) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) It didn't seem to difficult to me, so it might be different--and the guy teaching it definitely said Shanghai *Rooster.* It's not 'Betsy,' either--I'm talking about your standard AABB dance tune, here. This is the weirdest thing--a tune no one can identify!! denise:^) |
12 Nov 02 - 01:08 AM (#823956) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: reggie miles denise, I never did work this melody up nor did I track down a copy of it to listen to. I thought you might have some luck via the info that those who did respond to my previous inquiry provided. Did you search the DT as well as the Forum? When I did I found some other posts that seemed to be related. try this |

13 Nov 02 - 03:39 PM (#825487) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) No, it's not 'Betsy...' I wouldn't be stumped by a song *that* well-known! It's a reel that I learned at a dance camp. Guess I'll file it under "lost tunes..." (Maybe, if I stop looking, it'll turn up someplace!) |
13 Nov 02 - 04:38 PM (#825537) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: GUEST,harpgirl ...oh dear I deleted my cookie! Anyway I know the tune you refer to Denise. It is a commonly played Dulcimer tune but I have not played it myself. I have only heard it played. I'll see if I can find someone who knows it but I would look among dulcimer links...hg |
13 Nov 02 - 04:46 PM (#825551) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) Yes!! Yes!! It's a dulcimer tune...I learned it ON my dulcimer from another dulcimer player!! We may be on to something here... (See? I said if I stopped looking for it, it would show up!) denise:^) |
13 Nov 02 - 04:46 PM (#825552) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: GUEST,hg If you put shanghai rooster and dulcimer in google you will find several versions. Not sure which one you want. "Camping with the roosters" at JC's ABC tune finder might be close. Oh, wait you have already done this, right? Shanghai Rooster, Ledford String Band, Rounder 0008 (1972), cut # 15 |
13 Nov 02 - 04:53 PM (#825558) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: GUEST,hg I think it is more commonly known as Kill the Shangahi Rooster or Yankee Kilt my Shanghai Rooster. Music for it appears to be in the dulcimer players news and on lots of recordings. I'll see if I have it on a fiddle record when I get home. I probably do. |
13 Nov 02 - 05:14 PM (#825582) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: GUEST,hg Denise, listen to "Cluck old Hen and see if that is the tune you want at JC's. I realize I tried to find this tune a while back and got distracted after hitting a dead end myself. So I refreshed the thread. |

15 Nov 02 - 03:55 PM (#827201) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Shanghai Rooster From: denise:^) Well, I think that the one *listed* at most of these sources is it!! It'll be one of the ones that is recorded by a dance band, and listed as a reel (like the Coelas or Dulcimer Player's News listings). I'm just amazed that we can't find an abc file or sheet music, which is what my original search was for...I knew I'd looked all of the 'regular' places, but this list is such an amazing resource, I thought it was well worth a try--and it was! I learned a few things: ~ there are a couple of places I can look for a recorded version; ~ other dulcimer players have heard this tune & knew what I was talking about; ~there aren't a ton of dance tunes that have "rooster" in the title! I knew, before I even started looking here, that it wasn't "Sweet Betsy from Pike." I'll just have to get my hands on one of the recordings, and make my own sheet music. I hate to reinvent the wheel, but, obviously, this wheel's not been invented yet! If the Mudcatters can't find it, it doesn't exist... Thanks for all the help! denise:^) |
