We were there for the Maritime Festival earlier this year - nice waterfront. Most interesting thing? Discovering that Lord Nelson was Miss Whip when at home ...... Most memorable? Singing with Johnny Collins outside the Minerva on Sunday morning. Great weekend, guys.

There at Uni 1980-83. Have Aunt in Willerby and came up for the Peoples Voice Folk Festival in Beverley this year (great weekend) and the Maritime Festival too. Singing sea shanties in the Minerva, looking out of the open doors to see ships sailing down the estuary was wonderful - hope to repeat the experience next year. I like a lot of the Architecture in Hull, and the wonderful character filled old high-ceilinged pubs. Also like the 'Queen Victoria' toilets :-)

9and found the "Land of Green Ginger" which was NOT interesting.0

Most interesting thing - apart from the M62 (Westbound)? Well the barrier on the Hull River was intriguing - like a guillotine - to keep the North sea nad the Humber out of the hinterland then ther is the lifeboat perched about 50 feet up in the air and presumeably lanched by lowering the jib so that it can reach the water at all tide heights.

I was born there .( don't live there now). At school we where tought to be very proud of one of Hull's famous son's, William Wilberforce who was a leading light in the abolition of slavery. There is a very good museum showing much of the injustices of slavery. The airwoman Amy Johnson was also from Hull.

I used to sail out of Hull when I was in the merchant. Got there (from Grimsby) on the paddle wheel ferry "Lincoln Castle". She had a 3 legged steam recipricating engine and was coal-fired

What I'd like to know is how many Mudcatters from outside the UK have been to Hull. I claim that distinction, and have to say I really enjoyed the trip. I was even impressed by Durty Nellie's.
I guess I what I liked best were the maritime and transportation museums, the lightship, the Humber, and England's Finest Loo.
Can somebody link to a photo tour of that loo?

Terrified by the Ferry hooter as a baby on a day trip with my parents. Froze my B*****ks off watching The Mariners play the Tigers. Made a demo at the lovely Keith Herd's. Got in slight disfavour at the Newlands Hotel (?) staying there after a Family gig at the Uni (1969) and played at the Victoria Club with "Beat Group" in 1974. These past few years I visit my mother-in-law in Anlaby occasionally.
So, yeah, I been to Hull and back. BTW Joe Offer, in Hull they DO consider people from Cleethorpes as foriegners.

Well, I'm from outside the UK and I have been to Hull! In 1992, went there for the Sea Fever Festival with The Boarding Party. The pub sing at the Green Bricks was great! Shanty Jack arranged a special tour of the Maritime Museum for us, conducted by the curator, and it was wonderful. Would love to have a chance to go again!

To Hull for the Shanty festival - ah yes, getting the music in stereo from the band in the pub and the band on the quay. Pity it was two different songs. Same at the Minerva - except the band inside was competing with the impromptu musicians'session outside. And all the beer seemed to be nitrokeg. And the prices in the City Hall - made my locals down here in London seem positively cheap! And what do they look like in those silly bargee caps? Shame most of my family still lives there.

Yes ! Yes ! - I admit it - I've been to H9ll on three occasions - now will you please take the electrodes off my scrotum and sop hitting me with the rubber truncheons.

I really didn't go of my own choice - twice to see a client - and once for a software course. Like Mr Red I did find "The Land of Green Ginger" (after walking past it twice) and wondered why I bothered to look for it in the first place.

I was born in Hull, went to Bricknall Avenue Primary school for a while.
Most memorable thing- My Grandma's chocolate truffles, and the slow ticking of the clock in the quiet era before TV,when my grandma was resting in the afternoons- and the world slowed down to a crawl.
Could have been anywhere- but it was in Hull, in the 50's.

I too was born in Hull and lived in a prefab (nothing to do with the Beatles) that was built to replace the housing near the docks that was destoyed during the war. They were supposed to last 10 years but were flattened after about thirty. I attended Hull Grammar School but we moved away when I was sixteen so I had to go to work at that age instead of going to university. I returned to the area four years ago after a 35 year absence - am now a bit upmarket in Beverley, though.

We were always told at school that Hull was the biggest fishing port in the country and the third largest overall port after London and Liverpool - can't imagine where we would come after now! Good old Mrs T.

I lived in Hull for a couple of years in 1969 - 1971 and in the East Riding for a few years after that in Willlerby. I used to go to the Bluebell folk club every Sunday evening, which had just lost the Watersons as their residents. The late , great Ian Manuel ( one of the best ballad singers I have ever met) used to frequent the club - mainly the bar.
One of the best pubs is the 'Black Boy' on the old cobbled street that runs past the museum which has one of the most perfectly preserved Roman tesselated pavements. I forget the name of the street, but it runs parallel with Lowgate.
I have many happy memories of the place.

In the late 70s-early 80s I worked on barges taking timber, steel, animal feedstuffs grain and gravel to and from hull. watched them build the barrier, and with most people thought it was a waste of money to protect a load of deralict victorian warehouses, and was disgusted because it meant an end to a lot of water bourne trade, and seagoing coasters wouldn't be able to reverse up the river Hull (an amazing sight) because the wouldn't fit under the barrier . Last year went back for the 1st time in about 15 years, still cold and wet, but what a lot of money there is there now. Most of the places, and pubs I knew have either gone or become trendy

I too was born here... in Hull that is... about a couple of hundred yards fron The Kingston...in a 'one up & one down' with my 2 brothers sitting on the stairs waiting to go to bed in the one & only bedroomnd I haven't been outside Hull for more than 3 weeks since!!I think it's a mistake to think EVERYONE is on Mudcat... my mum isn't!... yet.

I too went to the Bluebell... folk Union one, in those days... as did my big brother Peter... 'Trog' he did monologues ...that was where all this began for me

A few weeks ago I was in the Bluebell and went up to the room used by Folk Union One ... it seemed much smaller.... and now has 2 pool tables in it.... it was empty ... except for the ghosts of so many voices!!! The street with the museums... and Durty Nellies is the High street.
Hull is a very friendly place... and does have music... lots of it

I've been to Hull many times. Before they put in the new Interstate, you pretty much had to go to Hull if you wanted to get to Hannibal.

I've never been to Hull but I've been to Yap Island, aren't they pretty much the same? Mostly flat, damnably hot, and these huge stone cartwheels all over the place. Everybody said it was just exactly like Hull and that since I'd been to Yap, I could skip Hull. Was somebody pulling my leg? I'll go to Hull if I have to but I'd rather not.

Another ex-resident here 1960-81, but not born there. Also another ex-Bricknell Ave infants&junior schools.

Happy memories of FU1 at the Blue Bell, also the Chase club at the Haworth Arms and a short-lived time of madness at the Pacific Club in High Street.

Hull is one of the better-kept secrets of the UK, lots of folks elsewhere think it's a fishing village somewhere near Skegness. I would go back but it is infested with imaginary 'catters and I fear it might be a let down, the pictures here on the cat are so much more exciting than reality could possibly be.

The "Rugby Tavern" was called "The Ship Molly" after a famous whaling ship that sailed out of Hull. I believe that the name changed after a hull rugby player,Graham Paul? who was the landlord there.

had many happy years using it as my local, with trevor eland at the helm.

John, I must tell you sume time the story of the "World mushy pea drinking competition" that was held ther in 1976.

In my house I have the bear tap that the last pint went through when the rugby closed.

In view of some of the hostile remarks which have been expressed about Hull, and also, quite unjustifiably, towards some of the people from there, I'd just like to add my compliments to the city and its musical traditions.
When I visited Hull and Beverley several times earlier this year I found a lively and vibrant community of singers and musicians, who were also very friendly and welcoming. There were, and still are, lots of sessions going on, and I'm encouraged to hear of Geoff Lawes' new club at the Bull which I hope will be a great success, and while I don't expect to be returning in the forseeable future, I'm still interested to hear about what goes on there.

The people who post from Hull are a diverse bunch of individuals who add a great deal to the forum with their humour, and wit, but above all with their love of music. I would admit that I could sometimes wish that there was a little less drivel, but if that is the price to pay for all the good stuff that is posted then I can't really object.

I am very concerned that those who have been distressed by some of the more offensive comments that have been made should not be driven away from here. I and many others value the contributions made by 'Ullites to the Mudcat, and to music in general, and I plead with those who are thinking of quitting to stay, and continue to entertain the rest of us with both BS and music.

I have great memories of Hull. As a schoolboy athlete I ran in the English Schools Championships there, billeted over two nights with a family in Willerby. I also remember Notingham Forest beating Hull City 4-0 one Christmas Day. Wally Ardron scored all 4, one right foot shot, one left, and 2 headers, As a singer I had memorable gigs at the Blue Bell, the famous Folk Union One, and also at the Rugby with the great Ian (Jock) Manuel. He was a superb singer especially good on bothy ballads. I don't think he got the recognition he deserved. He sang really good songs in a rough-edged but musical voice,with a terrific sense of rhythm. There was a good club at South Cave too. I've never sung at the Maritime Festival but I'm willing!. Hull held a leading position in the folk revival at one time. It would be grand to see it rise again.

I well remember your Hull gigs, Burl. And there's still a few of us who remember Jock's singing.

As for the folk revival, Hull and District (inc North Lincs) seems to be having a mini-revival of its own at the moment. There's a new club started at the Bull on Beverley Road (Thurs) and more sessions than you can shake a stick at. And the People's Voice Festival in Beverley this year was a wonderful example of what can happen when a few right-minded individuals get together - a completely free festival, with concerts, dance, sessions, workshops, dance teams, pub gigs, singarounds, the lot.
