Glenn Yarbrough, where is he now?

Always loved the tenor voice of Glenn Yarbrough and definately thought of him, as a big part of the folk revival of the 50,s and 60,s.
Havent heard his name mentioned much of late and even the local "oldies" stations seem to give him a pass.
Hopefully he's happilly retired somewhere,
Anyone know?

Apparently mostly retired. More here.

He apparently made enough from Baby the Rain Must Fall to retire to a yacht. Apparently money ran out or things took a turn for the worse, because I saw him at a couple of boat shows flogging his privately-produced CD.

A sad commentary on the public's taste. He was absolutely wonderful during the Limelighters phase, then he makes the dumbest song he ever sang, and it makes so much money he can retire.

I saw Glenn in concert maybe eight years ago. He was singing smarmy singer-songwriter stuff, looking ill, and sounding disgusted about his life and his ex-wives.
I think "Baby the Rain Must Fall" IS the real Yarbrough. The folk stuff came from Gottlieb and Hassilev.
Sad.

It's funny you should mention Glenn Yarbrough, Glen. I was shopping for clothes in my favorite boutique - Goodwill - and found "Glenn Yarbrough, Live at the hungry i" for .99. Recorded in Monoural...I'd forgotten stuff was ever recorded in mono. 7 of the 13 songs are by Rod McKuen.

I'm afraid the Rod McKuen stuff was the "Real" GY. Waste of a gorgeous voice.

Joe, I don't know who selected Limeliters' material, but Yarbrough recorded for Elektra at least as early as 1958, several years pre LL. You can hear him solo and in duet with Marilyn Child on Electra 143.

BTW if the implication of much of this thread is that he was a sell-out, I would opine that his selling out was a lot less of one than many of the 60s group.

John, can you give us a list of the songs he sang on that Elektra album? I'm sorry, but I have to say that in the 1990's, there was no question that he sold out to the easy-listening singer-songwriter market.

Not a sellout at all, IMO. Just had horrid taste in material (McKuen)

Just curious. Does the fact that he retired after making a lot of money make Glenn Yarbrough a capitalist?

How Glenn Yarborough ever managed to master his impression of a gargling porpoise is beyond me. He had a vibratto that could even put Anthony Newley's teeth on edge. My least favorite Glenn Yarborough song, and that's saying something, had to be The Road Goes Ever On from the incredibly lame tv version of The Hobbit.

As for whether his retiring after making a bunch of money made him a capitalist, Doug..well maybe. Perhaps the Republican Party will have him sing the national anthem at the Caucus. It's sure to bring down the house, or at least all the glass in the house.

That's funny, LEJ. I'm not a fan, myself, so I hope they don't take your advice.

Joe, I found the album. As you have asked for the program (and as you have been so helpful to others) here it is:

"Marilyn Child - Glenn Yarbrough Sing Folk Songs"
Accompanied by Fred Hellerman and Erik Darling
Notes by Robert Sherman
Elektra 143, @1958

    Side 1
We Come For to Sing (Duet) [later Limeliters' theme song]
Wee Cooper of Fife (G)
Lilli-I-O (D)
Bound For the Promised Land (G)
Weel Man the Keel Row (D)
Wayfaring Stranger (G)
Nickety Nack (M)
Three Jolly Sailor Boys (D)
Gently Johnny, My Jingalo (D)

    Side 2
Mary Had a Baby (D) [also found on some Elektra compilations]
New York Girls (G)
Red River Valley (D)
An Irish Fragment (M)
Buffalo Boy (D)
Who Killed Cock Robin (D)
Now Let Me Fly (M)
Everywhere I Look This Morning (G)

Yarbrough had an even earlier solo album (but not by much), Elektra 135, per the liner notes. My copy, obviously very old, has a couple of cuts with skips and repeats; now that it has been recalled to me I think I'll scour the thrift stores for a better copy.

Now, that's a Glenn Yarbrough album I'd like to have, John. I wonder if that Elektra catalogue will ever be available to us. Click here for a pretty good Elektra discography, plus a lot of fascinating information about the record company.
Click here for a near-perfect Elektra discography.
Yeah, I suppose it seemed that Glenn had tunred into a capitalist and made a lot of money. It also seemed he was being required to pay it all to his ex-wives. He spent a lot of the concert complaining about his ex-wives - I didn't want to hear about them.

Glenn is still singing around---quite a bit with his daughter, Holly. His quivering tenor sure sounded grand in harmony with other lower voices. Sometimes the sheer emotion of it could take your breath away.

I hear more about Holly these days----mostly from a mutual friend. The last time I saw her though was at Bob Gibson's funeral --- in 1996.

Funny this thread should come up at this time. Last Saturday night, I tuned in a PBS station and there was Glenn singing in a special about Folk Music (I can't recall the exact title) with other acts from the 1960's folk music revival such as The Brothers Four, The Smothers Brothers, Judy Collins, etc.

(Unfortunately, I tuned away to SNL during a pledge break and forgot to tune back to PBS, so I missed most of it. I don't know how recently the show was recorded.)

My favorite Glenn Yarborough song, I think, was his rendition of "I'm Goin' Back (To Where I Come From)."

Saw Glenn at a concert a few years ago in Florida. Since I was such a Limeliters fan, I couldn't wait to hear him sing.

Well, the concert was a disaster. His warm-up group sang much more than he did, and he just didn't seem to have his heart in the music anymore.

I was so disappointed.

I heard last week that he has Alzheimer's.
No proof or corroboration, though.

Well, his website is still up and running. There is a link on the site for bookings, though there is no calendar on the site as far as upcoming appearances. Nothing about retirement, illness or anything like that. But, the site doesn't say when it was last updated.

I'd also be curious to know how he is doing. I was a big Limeliters fan years ago and was always amazed the way the three voices (Hassilev, Gottlieb and Yarbrough) blended together so uniquely when they sang.

A little Googling has turned up the news that Glenn Yarbrough is now living in Nashville with his daughter Holly ("for the time being," she says) and has a Facebook page. She also says that he would like to hear from his fans.

My old ComputerSaurus cannot properly access Facebook, so I cannot comment on what's on the site, but I thought I'd pass along the information.

Glenn Yarbrough still lives with his daughter Holly in the Nashville area, and she looks after him and his Facebook page. Earlier this year, he celebrated his 85th birthday. Unfortunately, he can no longer sing; a throat operation in 2010 went wrong and cost him his singing voice.
