The Obsolete Music Hour- now available!

well, TWO hours, actually!....for many years, we in the Washington DC, USA area have been able to listen, on WAMU radio, to one of the most amazing music programs anywhere. Dick Spottswood plays Old-Time, Bluegrass, Cajun, Klezmer, jazz, Hawaiian, Italian....etc., etc....and so on...

It is difficult to describe, but it is just plain fascinating. And now, YOU can hear it on the WWW, using RealAudio!.....This was, as you might expect, one of the last programs they got around to archiving, and they won't keep all of them, but each weeks program is kept until the next one is ready.

This weeks just finished, and it was excellent, and a decent introduction to Dick's amazing collection....click on http://wamu.org/dickspottswood/index.html and scroll to the 'archive' link for 2 hours of...hmmmmm....you tell me!

You can thank me later. *grin* (I will try to refresh this until people are aware and have it programmed & bookmarked)

Thanks for that BillD. Bobert sent me a tape of the Spottswood program a while back and I was hoping they'd put him on the internet. Good stuff on there!

Thanks, Bill. The great advantage of being my own boss is that I let myself listen to music in the office. Shame the OMH is only once a week!

Definitely some interesting stuff to listen to.
How long do the individual programmes stay available on real audio?
Quack!

I have spent the past 20 minutes or so since my previous posting listening to the archived show and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Many thanks, Bill D for bringing it to my attention.
Geoff!

Yep, thanks Bill! Didn't know this was available. Dick Spottswood's weekly program has been a favorite of mine for years -- wonderful variety of artists and types of music, much of it from Dick's world-class collection of vinyl 78s. Dick's show has allowed me to hear stuff I would NEVER know about otherwise. Nice to know I don't have to always be near my radio on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 to know what's been played. 'Tis truly a wonder...just wait till you hear the holiday/Christmas music he plays! You ain't lived till you have heard Sardinian Bagpipes doing local Carols! *grin* and "Early on One Christmas Morn"...one of the most amazing Xmas songs around. Dick Spottswood may have the only copy of that record around..., but he plays it almost every year!

Glad people are learning about the program...even those who live right down the street... ;>)

He regularly does tributes to old-time artists and themes, and has SO many years of collecting behind him. I have slides of Dick Spottswood in overalls, following Roscoe Holcomb around in 1974, taping everything he could....

Make yerself a sticky note for the PC so you don't miss next week!

While looking for an anthology on Barnes ad Noble, I found that they cross-index CDs by not only artists, but sound engineers and contributors. A search on "Spottswood" gives you a list of 59 recordingsthat Dick has had some involvement in, whether contributing rare cuts from his collection of 78's or writing extensive liner notes about the music and the performers. You can see the results here:

Spottswood at Barnes and Noble The first 10 CDs in the list are:

Roots Music: An American Journey
Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton
Avalon Blues: Mississippi John Hurt
Vintage Music from India
Art of the Cymbalom: Music of Joseph Moskowitz 1916-1953
The King of the Klezmer Clarinet: Naftule Brandwein
The Bluegrass Album, Vol. 5: Sweet Sunny South
Slovak Csardas: Dance Tunes from the Pennsylvania Coal Mines 1928-1930
Au Bal Antillais: Franco Creole Biguines...

which gives you an idea of the breadth and depth of Dick's interests and knowledge. And his radio show reflects all this, and more! Give it a listen...
