Stripped truss rod nut

Allen wrench type nut that has had the inside flats reamed out. Now what's a mother to do? Thought about making a new slot with a chisel and hammer....????

Hammer and chisel likely to do more harm than good. Slot will probably transmit less torque before shearing than an allen head anyway. And of course heat is going to be a no-no too.

Is there a metallurgist in the house? My first thought is to drill the hex (easy if it's on the headstock, hard if it's on a cross-brace), make a steel rod just too large to go in, freeze the bits off it until it is a push fit, then gently heat the other end of it and apply torque hoping the shrink-fit will transmit enough torque to do the necessary, but is it going to be possible to remove the allen bolt entirely and refit a new one?

Use the services of a good repair man. It may work out cheaper in the long run.

Richard Bridge, thanks for the suggestions. Hex is on the crossbrace - you raise a valid issue if indeed the nut is able to be removed. It may be time to relegate this axe to slide work only. Peace.

I second the repair person suggestion. Truss rods can be broken. If you should snap it or strip the threads at the end of it, you'll be looking at a very expensive repair. Go ahead and pay the small amount of money to have the simple repair done instead of taking a chance on creating a major repair.

Following my previous post I have had a rummage on the net about truss rods and it seem unlikely that even if you did get enough friction by my previous method to turn the trussrod, you would be able to spin it out.

I don't know if they deal with it here, but this is a great site run buy a Pro Luthier. I've found it very helpful in setting up my banjo.
