The service provider said it could have been corrupted. He helped me install Navigator 4.79, and the trouble (difficulty in connecting to sites) disappeared. I had vers. 4.78. There is a new 4.80, but the technician said they haven't fully tested it to see if there are any glitches, and to wait a while before asking for that one. |

Once I'm on for the session it's OK, but when I have to reset my cookie if I've closed Netscape. I got some suggestions from Mudcat help, but none did the trick. I'm using Explorer because I don't want to bother yet with the upgrade or figuring it out. There are a number of things I like better about Netscape. |

Microsoft and Netscape are feuding over Java code, each has proprietary versions. Needless to say, each doesn't always work. Try Mozilla. It's free and built on Netscape's bones. |

If I want Netscape-like feeling I use Mozilla or Phoenix(Mozilla with no mail or news--much smaller) Mozilla works well, and Phoenix is really getting raves in some quarters.. |

Previously, selecting the "clears and deletes" functions in IE would leave most cookies, and sometimes "offline content," intact. (i.e., it didn't work very well). Since accepting a strongly recommended upgrade to IE6, plus a couple of subsequent security patches on IE, it works too well - it now deletes virtally everything, including my 'cat cookie, if I use the cleanup functions in IE. Since I'm very sure that all 'catters keep up to date on security fixes, it's possible that this "ultra-cleanup" fix has affected your cookies????? Or is it possible that a Netscape "fix" has changed the way things work? (I'm only assuming that Netscape issues patches, since I don't use it.) I think the changes I've seen are largely related to resetting my choices to "defaults" with the new install of IE6, and that I'll get it working once I've worked through them. The clinker is that Netscape and IE use very similar "favorites" and "cookies" files, so either can mangle the other.(of course, without malicious intent?) John |

28 Nov 02 - 01:39 AM (#836252) Subject: RE: Tech: trouble logging on with netscape From: open mike i "heard" several people in the chat room lamenting that everyone has had trouble logging on for the past couple of days...i think it might be server trouble and not on the other end--at our computers. i just got a new computer and it comes with Internet Explorer.. in order to get netscape you first have to go to IE and down load it. and in order to use any thing besides outlook express for e-mail you have to disable some built in connections....i don't like b3ing told which system to use--hurray for choice!! |

I've been getting a "server contacted, waiting for reply" that hangs indefinitely, almost once every other day since the change. Apparently at least a few others are having the same problem. open mike - A very large number of the functions that at basic and integral with Windows operation are "contained" for purposes of description in the Internet Explorer "wrapper." It makes it easier on a lot of users to have the "extensions" to permit internet communication in the package. Microsoft has never made it particularly difficult to use another browser or email program, but expecting them to include instructions for how to use someone else's program is a little like complaining that Ford doesn't include instructions for how to put a Chevy engine in your new Taurus. Isn't it nice that IE worked "out of the box" well enough for you to get the program you prefer to use? John |

I'm sending this thread to the techo friend who eventually sorted out my problems (except they keep coming back) I now have 3 mudcat bookmarks - the original one, shorty & the link from my folk club website. Best one I've found is shorty, most of the time - but with all of them I have trouble reading threads. I can read a thread or 2, then click on the next one, & suddenly it's trying to connect to my email isp, not mudcat - & like John I get a "server contacted, waiting for reply" that hangs indefinitely, so I try another bookmark, mudcat or something else. I'll study this thread at work tomorrow - thanks for all the input. sandra |

Is it possible that there is something strange about your ISP. BTW, I assume that by now you have discovered that Netscape HELP is useless? |

One of my colleagues who is not really a friend muttered that the Help Desk is for work related matters before spending lots of time with me when a virus sneaked in some months back. Several times a little window popped out saying words to the effect of "something has happened - pls tell us - we wanna help you". What I said to the computer was "As I don't know what the (rude word) happened, how can I tell you?" & cancelled it. Have you see the other thread "Tech - Mudcat Server"
I'm awaiting advice from a techo friend. |

I log on late at night so I don't know if it is a busy time for netscape, it's now 10.15pm my time, & 6.05am according to mudcat - well before US business hours? Another of life's little mysteries. sandra Chris's reply below - It would seem to be a server problem (ie mudcat's problem) as the most likely cause. If they've grown too fast for their servers or their network bandwidth you could see this kind of problem. OTOH, it could just be your slow/congested ISP. If you can fetch stuff from one or other of the servers, then the connection must be ok. If the browser can display it, then it's probably not netscape. Neither of those causes can be ruled out though, and the problem may be intermittent too... |

I use a POTS (plain old telephone service) connection, and it will frequently "drop" the connection - especially if the net is busy. It then has to "redial" to connect to the ISP before it can hook me back to where I'm surfing. Since everything goes in and out of your machine through your ISP, it may be just doing a "wake-up" there, and will proceed to the connection you want if it's successful. Mudcat has had some "capacity problems" recently, and the "web site found, waiting for connection" probably means that the 'cat server is hung up in traffic. I don't know what the busy times for the 'cat are, but 6:00 AM 'cat time is about 11:00 AM in Hull, and we know how much bandwidth those guys use. I get the "hang" most often about 02:00 CST, which is about 08:00 AM in Hull.(I guess there are other euro time zones?) John |
