One artist who has inspired me greatly is Stephen Fearing. Just saw him at Lucky Bar in Victoria, British Columbia and he is FABULOUS. But it seems that he has never been discussed here. Please go to stephenfearing. com and listen especially to the cuts from his " Live " CD. I'd really be interested to hear what all of you think about his music. By the way, I'm jazzyjack because of my admiration for Diana Krall and belong to her site. |

I first encountered Stephen about a year after Out To Sea came out... a summer time buddy of mine had the CD, and make me a copy of it... I couldn't learn Welfare Wednesday quick enough or play it often enough... Dublin Bay and Beguilling Eyes soon followed... Now, well, I got all his stuff, except for a copy of The Way I Walk (His latest) cause I'm waiting to see him in concert so I can get it directly off him... There's a KILLER SWEET version of The Parting Glass on it... but I do have to admit, that I think I prefer the versions of the new stuff from So Many Miles (his live cd) to the full orchestrations that I've heard on Galaxy... He's a way cool dude... Last time he was here, he followed a few of us out fer a pint or 2 after his show, and even indulged my 'wanna-be' question about his song-writing process... Herself and I are more than likely gonna use his song "When My Baby Calls My Name" as our wedding dance song... One of the neat things on his web site, is the invitation for folks to pick thier top 10 of his songs for inclusion in his soon-to-be song book! ;-) |

I was at Rick Fielding's show the other night and picked up "Six Strings North of The Border". It has Stephen Fearing's "Martin's" on it. Some awfully pretty playing. I have to admit it's my first exposure to mr. Fearing. I'm going to have to buy more. I would highly recommend Six Strings North Of the Border. It also features Don Ross, J.P. Cormier, Bruce Cockburn and of course Mr. Fielding himself. Six Strings |

(mind, it would mean more if ya had the stones to post as an entity, rather than as a faceless cowardly guest) just as I, and others, are welcome to disagree with you... RT for me runs too much hot and cold... there are some few songs of his that I really enjoy, but most of his work if find on a floating scale from total indifference to truly despise... Whereas with Stephen, while I enjoy some of his songs more than others, I cannot think of a song he's written that I say consistently skip over when it comes around on the CD... But whatever blows yer hair back eh.... (Oh how funny it'd be if above Guest was Stephen himself, playing silly buggers and having a little fun with the Mudcatters... With his sometimes strange sense of humour, I wouldn't put it totally past him... I mean he does occasionally tour with the likes of Tom Wilson and Colin Linden... how 'straight' can he be eh?? LOL) |

One of the differences for me, is that I feel I'd really enjoy Steven's company (though I would guess he's an introvert, as I am...), whereas I just get a little put off by RT's points and veiwpoints. I did (do) love the inovations and renditions from Fairport Convention though! ttr |

My post was actually not a review but here is the review; Stephen's gig demonstrated his substantial guitar virtuosity. He seems able to keep up a strum rhythm interjecting bass runs and treble finger picking licks. He often digresses into elaborate solos sometimes using jazz chords. His singing is emotional and has that Irish lilt .His songs are incredibly varied. He does a driving tune like " Anything You Want " and is equally entertaining with a ballad like "A Town Called Jesus ". He brings tears to your eyes ( at least if you're Canadian ) with " The Longest Road I've Known " His amusing stories and manner make him seem like a buddy is telling you about his travels. He did 2 encores and a short guitar solo. His show blew me away. JUST GO SEE HIM IF YOU'RE ANY KIND OF FOLK FAN. |

Get his " The Way I Walk " CD. I've already learned most of these songs and sing them at the open stages I host here on Vancouver Island. My fav. is " On The Great Divide '" with Jonelle Mosser singing harmonies ( have you heard of her ? ) black walnut; It's great to find other fans as keen as me about Stephen. At a recent open stage, I told the audience that I thought Stephen's work had surpassed Gordon Lightfoot and got some boos for such irreverence. However at the Victoria Folk Club, a much more informed audience chose to hear me perform " Wailing Wall " over " Bitter Green ". Stephen's guitar work is in the stratosphere. Here's a challenge guys ; Listen to the rhythm of strumming in " Annything You Want " and try to duplicate it. It's giving me fits. |
