Just managed to fumble my way into the Mudcat chat room .. someone came in and asked if I was "gallowing?" Then they left.. Where's the glossary .. what have I done? Did I do something wrong? I don't like this .. it's a big scary white room with no windows .....

That chatroom is indeeed an unusual environment. It tends to make normal people weird while making weird people into gibbering blatherskites. I don't hang out there any more as it all reminds me too much of acid flashbacks.

Jeez Hille, I went in a few weeks ago, people said "Hi"...and my internet connection went down, and did it again....and again.

Maybe there's a secret password.

Cheers, and happy gallowin'

Rick

I was just there. Visited with an old friend. No problems. Although the delay makes the flow of conversation odd.

Still like to know what gallowing means -- hanging around? Closest guess I can come up with. Its what you do when you're tired of waiting for noose, I guess. Knotty little problem, huh? Can't let it slip by though...

All right.... The online Webster's Collegiate Dictionary at the Meriam-Webster site doesn't have "Gallowing" listed. It is probably in the Unabridged Dictionary, but that site's accessible to paid members only. A Google search found ten sites where the word has been used, and it seems to have something to do with the occult or supernatural. Anybody got a really big dictionary?

Gallow- "to cluck or to scream." Generally said of birds. "Gallowing cries thickened the midnight air." Aird (mystery writer). From the trusty OED.
Did you really do that?

Ignor Q - Cspaw was in the same room

Cspaw passed gas, and passed the insult onto you.

It is an old mudcat "trick"...agreed it is sick.

Stay or leave, it is up to you.

Hanging around makes sense. The gallows were where hangings took place. The comment was probably made by someone who learned English with "Hooked on Ebonics."

"Gallowing" is internet slang for someone hanging around a chat room by themselves...

Usually waiting for someone, anyone else to show up and chat...

And yes, the references to being hung by the neck are valid... IOn kind of a "misery loves company" thing...

dunno where you got the white room thing from....the MC chat room is a rather disreputable snug out the back of some tavern somewhere. It appears to have a jello pit ( empty except for a set of deflated bagpipes,a thong and two rusty kazoos), a jacuzzi that most are somewhat wary of now, given it's "life-enhancing" electrical properties and a pinball machine that is set to tilt on any rendition of Wild Rover. It has been known to be afloat before now but I suspect that may be the generous imbibing of certain intoxicants by some of our more free-spirited chat-ees.I think you must have wondered into the "special" room of the NYCFTTS by mistake.Have you found your way out yet or should I send Roger the Skiff in to fetch you?

Don`t worry Hille. The "school playground" can be a bit scary first time! Just duck if someone kicks a football in your direction until you learn the moves! Before you know it you will be scoring goals, passing and "dribbling" yourself!

OED has 3 definitions for Gallow as a verb. It looks like internet has sort of revived an obsolete usage in Hang around.

(Obs.)To hang on a gallows or cross.
Lit. cite: 1400 Leg. Rood Wi grete lewes he is galwed, And dye for Monnes gelte.

(rare)Of a bird: To cluck, to scream. Hence gallowing.
Lit. cite:
1825 HOGG Q. Hynde 80 The capperkailzie scorn'd to flee But gallow'd on the forest tree. 1830 AIRD in Blackw. Mag. XXVIII. 817 Choked shrieks..And gallowing cries..thicken'd the midnight air.

obs. form of GALLY v., to frighten.
1605 SHAKES. Lear III. ii. 44 The wrathfull Skies Gallow the very wanderers of the darke And make them keep their Caues

Should have said that we were in the room entered via shorty, as www.mudcat.org was down at the time- perhaps you got in later after www. was back up, cos I've only just left the chat now.
(And yes, there ARE 2 separate rooms, one via shorty and one via www., Skipjack & I demonstrated that the other night.)

You won't find the internet usage of "Gallowing" in any dictionary...

Nor will you find the net usage of "Ghost" or "Ghosting"...

But if some day you get tired of gallowing around in the mudchat, maybe you can take it upon yourself to ghost a few other chat rooms at random, and pick up some of the 'standard slang' (if that's not a contradiction in terms...)

:-)

Well, it was less "Gallowing" (now I know what it means :) than staring mystified at the screen wondering what should happen next .. still, I am a Mudcat Chatroom virgin no more .. eventually had an animated discussion / several-ways conversation touching on sloe gin and lubrication :) .. Sloely lubricated or something .. So, I guess I am now thoroughly inititiated!!

There are two rooms? Oh, no! My liddle luddite brain just about managed to work one out .. and I've had to lose knowing how to use the VCR in order to make space for Chatroom procedures :(

I've made many friends in the chatroom. There's something about "live", real-time conversation -- when you know the person you're chatting with is actually "there" at the same time you are -- that just lends a sense of comaraderie.

But lately, everytime I've checked the quick links menu, it tells me that no one is in the chatroom...

Is Everyone Avoiding Me??

3pm Thursday .. I've just looked and Mr Happy has cloned himself (or something) .. he's
in www.mudcat with Schantjieman and MMario and
in shorty.mudcat with Partridge

Or is it a virtual doppelganger .. can one person exist simultaneously at two places at the same time ..

MUDCHAT = a genuine warp in the space time continuum?
