I've just been told of this webcam at Maeshowe. Obviously it isn't always at sunset, but they have an animated gif which is.

Many thanks, Penny. In the words of my teenagers, this site is way too cool!

If one goes to the Orkneys at soltice time, is it possible to see the site/sight?

I understand there's a very long waiting list for Newgrange, Ireland at solstice time

Here's the Newgrange site - it has an animation of the sun beam passing.

Penny, thanks for the links. Those are great! Question, I have seen it also written Maes Howe. Is one or the other more correct?

Here is a link to some basic suggestions for Solstice activities for households etc.: clickety.

Penny's link to Newgrnage gives other links, including a video clip at http://tesla.csuhayward.edu/sacredplaces/newgrange2.html

any answer to my query about access to Maes Howe/Maeshowe?

From what they say on this site, it doesn't sound as though a person could, Phillipa, due to limited space. I also followed the link from there to the Orkney Tourist board and their events listings which referred me back to the live webcast accessed from the main page, probably the same one Penny linked to?
