Death of the Playhouse, Beverley

I regret to announce the closeure of this ancient but venerable live music venue. Acording to the Hull Daily Mail it will close this Sunday as the owners, Hull Music Co have gone into liquidation. Lat week it hosted a comedy night (full house, Wednesday) and Patrick Street (full house Thursday) but it has become the victim of the growth of muli plex cinemas ans stopped showing films four months ago.

But multi plex cinemas don't have a stage like the old cinemas so no live bands. Probably wouldn't get a licence under the new legislative proposals. How gloomy I am becoming!

we had a similar thing in our area--an old barn-like building had
been the location where much acoustic music had been performed in
the recent decades. Fortunatley in our case, the APalm Playhouswe,
which had become surrounded by car sales lots, and apartments, was
able tofind a new home in a neighboring town at the site of an old
opera house from 100 years ago (you see, in US, and California 100
year old buildings seem quite old to us) so we are still in luck of
having a venue for live music. With luck in your situation the Beverley
may be re-incarnated and will live agian....here's hoping....
perhaps all you hull-ites can form a corporation or co-operative
and carry it on!! byt the looks of the mud cat threads there must be thousands of folkies in hull!!

Yes, I read about this in the Beverley Advertiser today - I'm glad that I went to the comedy festival and to see the Incredible String Band there last month.

What are the implications for the folk festival since the Playhouse was a major venue for that in the past?

Roger

Hull Daily Mail today implies some sort of rescue package being put together - anyone know details?

I think that as this is the only real Theatre in Beverley and HQ for East Riding Council is in Town ought urgent representations be made to that authority - preferably by Theatre Groups, Musical Groups etc etc.

On alternatives for the folk festival, there are none in Town but on the edges, the Leisure Centre, Army Museum, Racecourse or Memorial Hall?

Schools may be a possibility - the Grammer School is used for a piping weekend in April - organised by Garrard

Tonights Daily Mail has the lady who organised the Comedy day last week as a possible rescuer - via wealthy national comics including Paul Merton. A big vague I thought.
