ADD: The Goodnight Song (from Blue Murder)

I have the CD "No one stands alone" by Blue Murder...Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, et al....wonderful singing. I would like to get all the words to The Goodnight Song, and chords would be a bonus. The chorus starts:
So goodnight my friends as the dawn comes pale
And the eastern winds bring the threat of gales
Keep a hold on hope through the darkest vale (veil?)
And we'll meet further on down the road.

Cheers, and thank you,

JennieG

Jeez Breezy I would love to but I live in Sydney, Oz! Harrow is way too far to come for just one night......I'm not even sure where it is.
Cheers

So how you doing getting them words down?
Donnelly was highly entertaining in his own way, looks like he's done street work in a previous incarnation
Its cold here now anyway like gloves and coats and scarves time
What key ? using C Shapes? try playing along to the cd.Take your time.
I just so happen to have Coope Boyes and Simpson guesting at my club next May 23rd with Donnelly the 16th, Martin Carthy next Dec 12th!

Breezy,
I bought the CD from a bloke named Garry who has a music shop in the Blue Mountains just west of Sydney with the wonderful name of Stairway to Kevin (the shop, not the mountains!) Last time I went there I could hear glorious singing as I walked up the stairs so I bought the only other copy of the CD. I will be on holidays soon so will have more time to get the words down. The CD is in the car player at the moment so I can listen on my way to work and sessions..I'm not sessioning tonight, it's pouring rain out there, wonderful rain, hopefully the bushfires are out now.
Cheers
JennieG

I've copied and pasted this from Reinhard Zierke's Watersons site (Blue Murder: No one stands alone). I'm sure Reinhard is grateful if someone corrects the last tiny unclear bits in his transcription.

GOODNIGHT SONG
(Jim Boyes)

Chorus:
So goodnight my friends as the dawn comes pale
And the Eastern wind brings the threat of gales
Keep a hold on hope through the darkest veil
And we'll meet further on down the road

I have traveled far from this island strand
From the icy waste to the burning sand
Ploughed the raging sea, seen the verdant land
Been at home in a place far away

Chorus

Many different sirs(?) bought(?) much the same
Though the ways are strange and have different names
And a friendly face breaks a thousand chains
And a smile breaks the lock on the door

Chorus

We have joined in song, laughed a night away
Swapped out tales of woe, kept the clouds at bay
In the morning clear will be on our way
But we'll meet further on down the road

Chorus

So let's drink a health to good times gone by
When our spirits soared and we touched the sky
And we'll bid farewell but not goodbye
And we'll meet further on down the road

Chorus:
So goodnight my friends as the dawn comes pale
And the Eastern wind brings the threat of gales
    |:Keep a hold on hope through the darkest veil
And we'll meet further on down the road:|

The first line of the second verse is -

"Many differences, but much the same"

It's a great song

The word at the end of the chorus is vale not veil. Vale is another word for valley.

Lester's verse;

We have joined in song, laughed a night away
Swapped OUR tales of woe, kept the clouds at bay
In the morning clear WE'LL be on our way
But we'll meet further on down the road

Nice song.
Here's another "goodnight" song by Blue Murder from a marvelous Joseph Spence/Pinder Family tribute CD:

"I Bid You Goodnight"
