Now the girl has just slipped in and mentioned that yesterday was her birthday. I figure it was a coy way of getting her own birthday thread myself...........But I'm just the guy to start one!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
JEAN RITCHIE

I can't think of anyone I'd rather start a thread for and this is a "special birthday"......80 years of song from the "Mother of the Mountain Dulcimer"!!!

Best wishes Jean.....May you have many more!!!!

I must add my best wishes, and thanks for the years of music and stories. I was 12 years old, the proud owner of a dulcimer I desparately wanted to play, but there was no one I could find to teach me, and the folks at the music shop looked down their noses and raised their eyebrows at me. Then my parents found your dulcimer book for me, and I opened it up and never looked back. That was 42 years ago, and here I am-- I still love the old songs best, and I am delighted that our son seems to feel the same way.I have been fortunate enough to meet and hear many fine singers and players, but no one has more influenced my love and understnding of this extraordinary music than you, Jean. Happy Birthday!

Carly

If I may, along with my best wishes, I'll add a link to this thread where Jean gives us a wonderful audio card. I think that it was overlooked by many.

Happy Birthday Jean.

I've enjoyed your music for enough time to adequately reflect on all I've heard but I won't mention how long so as not to embarrass either of us.

Brightest and Best, Jean! I've just finished my 59th year today and I am happy to bask in your light and to continue to enjoy all of the good work you have done and are doing. You've been an inspiration for me for forty years and now in the last year, my sweet wife has taken up the dulcimer and you have another disciple. She is doing quite well on an instrument I bought from Warren May in Berea, KY, 20 years ago. T.O.M.

Indeed! a VERY happy birthday!

You've been a part of MY musical life ever since I saw you perform (even though you had a TERRIBLE head cold!) in New York City in, what, January of 1960? Thank you for everything!

Sunday's service was wonderful and my musical selection (Brightest and Best) was well received, again, thanks.

Dear Jean,
How could you possibly have turned 80? Many, many happy returns, dear friend, and many more years of joy and health to you. You have been an inspiration since I met you at Fox Hollow when I was 17. I was a long, lonesome way from home, wandering around the campground, when this familiar and much-admired voice I recognized invited me into her camper for some tabbouleh. That simple gesture of graciousness, so typical of you, made a world of difference. I still remember it all these years later; that simple but loving gesture of yours became one of those models of inclusiveness and warmth that I have tried to pass on over the years to others who may be standing on the outside waiting to be included.

Musically, the inspiration is great, as well. "Cool of the Day" was one of the first songs I heard you sing, and still remains a "comfort song" to me when I feel fretful about peace and justice and the fragile Earth we share.

Much love to you, Jean. It was so good to hear you receive your award at the Heritage Fellows concert in Washington (and again on its rebroadcast the day after Thanksgiving!).
Birthday hugs, Kathy

Dear Kytrad
My Orchid CD arrived this morning, and I was listening to it when I came online. I love your Deep Shady Grove. Thank you for giving so much pleasure and encouragement to so many people, and may you have many more years in which to do it.

NO! NO! Spaw, I was NOT asking for a birthday thread--- that's why I only mentioned it the day AFTER my birthday...I DISAPPROVE of birthday threads!!!

That said, Thanks, everyone...You're all so very kind; as for me, I'm thankful to be still walkin around, and able to get out a song or two once in awhile. A few observations regarding the above letters:

1) Spaw didn't spill the beans about my age; I did it in the thread he stole it from- also, it's told in the first sentence of my book Singing Family of the Cumberlands (1955)

2) Don't all singers have terrible head colds when they have concerts?

3) Have made taboulli perhaps three times in my life- you lucked out, Kat!

4) What's an Orchid CD? Is there a recording of, "Deep Shady Grove" that I don't know about?

Thanks, love and blessings to all,    Jean

Jeanie:

No, it's the recording you let us use for the Mudcat CD - "Orchid" is the name of one of the five disks that make up the Mudcat CD project. The other four are called Plum, Strawberry, Rose and... dang, a senior moment here... Violet!! You can find order information and a link to the playlists for the different disks on this thread. Hope you get a set!!

I don't do birthday threads either, but just occasionally an exception is appropriate; and this is one. Many happy returns, Jean, and thanks for everything. I wish there were more people like you.

Hi, Jean! And a Joyful Birthday. Never settle for Happy. It's been a long time since we talked, when I booked you for a concert at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. We were just kids then. I'm retired now, and living in Derby, CT... It's a delight to see you appearing here at Mudcat every once in awhile..

Enjoy you day...

Hmm, I sent this and it doesn't show up so here goes again.
Thank you Jean for sending this out to everyone. What a lovely
gift especially at a time when folks should be showering you
with gifts. It all downloaded through our creaky mountain
phone lines without a hitch or a pause. Your family is getting
mighty handy with these computer gadgets. I just pushed the
buttons and marvelled. And, seeing as I'm here anyway, I hope
you enjoyed a right fine birthday.

Jean, I just love the Christmas greeting. I had to spend about 5 hours in the car today. Popped in my "Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson at Gerdes Folk City" CD and listened to it 2 times in between stops. I just love that performance. But especially where Doc apparently got embarassed and you giggled and said "He's so shy". I break out into a huge smile everytime I hear it and imagine your face and his. One of the things I thank God for is the gift he gave us in performers like you (Doc, too.)

All the best,

Mick

Jean, all the best and many happy returns from Las Vegas. No, I'm not headlining at the Wayne Newton Theatre, and I'm not playing craps with a showgirl on my arm. What a crazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy town. But if all the casinos and hotels and !@#$%^ bars in Vegas made all their signs to read: "Happy Birthday, Jean", then it would be cool wouldn't it? Love, Chance.
