The Extreme Folk Society...

I haven't seent his site mentioned in these parts, but I really like thier attitude. Here's what they say they are doing:

What the Hell Do We Do?

We intend to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and fearlessness. We will elevate all attempts at originality, however daring, however extreme.

In suggesting such goals and values, we are aware of entering into a sphere of some disrepute. We will bear bravely the smear of "madness" with which they try to gag all innovators, for without creating new values it is impossible to create alternatives.

The object is not so much as to have it our way, but to have it in a way of our own. We have faith in the excitement of new music. In succeeding to restore some measure of controversy to folk music we will break the crust of apathy and overcome outdated perceptions of folk music. We will make debate and controversy, not dull pedantic chant, the common style.

In time younger, stronger folks will probably throw us in the wastebasket like useless manuscripts. We want it to happen. They will come against us, our successors, from far away, from every quarter, dancing to the winged cadence of their first songs, baring the hook-like claws of predators. They will not find our doors barred.

Though a minority, we declare our high intentions to the all the living of the earth.

ANd here's where you can expolore their site:

The mission statement sounds great but there is not much evidence of excitement on the site itself (I visit the Forum) and the activities are closed to non-members.

Not sure if this isn't a backward step rather than a forward one ..... sounds like the stuff that was being said in the 70's when contemporary folk was making an impact.

Well, I like the philosophy -- can't really tell what they're _doing_ with it though, you're right.

ummmm..reminds me of a cartoon I saw once..

two guys in beads & feathers and day-glow shirt & pants meet a friend..

"What are you two doing?" asks friend.

"We're fighting the rising tide of conformity!"

"Then what's with the gaudy clothes?"

"This is our uniform."

.......seems like gratuitous rebellion to me, which leads to some AWFUL music. (often)

And you can only drink THEIR booze, no other alcohol allowed.
Seem pretty full of themselves, too.
Think I'll stay where folk are folk and sing folk.

remember in Orwell's Animal Farm - where the pigs said, "Sure we're all equal, but some of us are more equal then others!"

...and I thought this was going to be related to extreme ironing (and vacuuming) about which there was a programme on Channel 4 last might.
