11 Dec 02 - 01:11 PM (#845283) Subject: So who caught the Dixie Chicks on TV? From: GUEST There has recently been a spate of "country" music specials on TV that haven't been on PBS. IMNSHO, you can take Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and ____________ (fill in the blank with your preferred act of violence). But the Dixie Chicks last night were (again, IMNSHO) great (and I don't just mean great lookin'). I was suitably impressed, this having been the only time I've seen them perform live, with their musical chops, and the fact that the back-up orchestra (yes, orchestra) songs worked really well. Usually such endeavors are awful. Anyone else catch them? And what did you think? And does anyone know if it is it true that the controversy surrounding their song about killing Earl was banned from some radio stations? |

Goodbye Earl was eschewed by several radio stations because some people felt that it promoted violence... although, there was never any hoopla about Garth Brooks' Mama's in the Graveyard, Papa's in the Pen, in which Papa drives his 18-wheeler smack into the hotel and kills Mama and her lover. Personally, I didn't think Goodbye Earl was really that great of a song to begin with. I do like their version of Landslide, though. |

Everyone I talk to says they like/love it. As to Goodbye Earl, you are dead right about the male/female double standard. A very good (male) friend of mine claims Goodbye Earl isn't about violence, it's a song about celebrating the power of the sisterhood to end it! |

They have their roots in rock and country, with a heavier emphasis musically on the bluegrass side, and presentation/style wise on the rock side. I also like them because they wear clothes, and ain't shakin' their booties at us in their videos. |

I think that the group is enormously gifted, and they fit with James Taylor like they'd been singing together for years. Pretty straightforward folks, too, with a good sense of who they are and what they want to do with their music. Usually, cover songs can't match the original, but I think their recording of Landslide it even better than the original. Jerry |

But the reason I love the Landslide version of the Chicks is because it seems like a totally different song to me. I remember the original by Stevie Nicks as being maudlin and mediocre pop. To my ears, that whanging banjo was a tremendous improvement to what had been for me a long forgotten, forgettable song. |

The DVD features seven additional songs not aired on the original NBC special!" The above website has an email list to get on for notification of pre-sale of the DVD. I'd say it is definitely worth it. The production values of the program were top notch (I remember at one point thinking to myself I even was enjoying the lighting design), and the performance was too. Do I understand this right--MattR would like to contract a STD from the Dixie Chicks? |

They play pretty well, if you are into pop/country, and if I was blind, I might be able to give an unbiased opinion. But they base their appeal on being sexy ladies, and only secondarily on the music, and that would always be a problem. (I can find girls just as good looking, wearing less clothes, and NOT distracting me with banjos on the WWW anytime!*grin*_ |

From: GUEST BillD, I think your preconceived notions and personal prejudices may be standing in the way of you enjoying these musicians. They are musicians first, not a packaged set of bimbos. It is, IMO, a pretty sexist interpretation to be dismissive of these musicians because they are "sexy ladies". They are professional performers, and on stage, they dress like female professional performers of their era. As performers, they aren't doing anything that Emmylou or June Tabor or Allison Kraus or Eliza Carthy or Sharon Shannon or any other female performer wouldn't do, yet we don't see people dismissing because them because "well they are pretty sexy, but can they play/sing?" The Dixie Chicks phenomenon isn't about the looks of these girls. They just know that their looks are part of the bargain of the business they are in. These three women have worked very hard to come up the ranks. They are accomplished musicians. And what I think the Dixie Chicks phenomenon is about is the uplifting and transcendant spirit to their music that is rare in any genre of music, by musicians of any age. Part of that spirit is the edginess and sassiness, but some of it goes much deeper than that. They are musically fresh, infectious, and compelling. Some female performers, just like some male performers, do deserve to be dismissed as pretty packages. But the Dixie Chicks, IMO, don't fall even close to the line of being in that category. |

I do think the Chicks themselves show fine musicianship and the added bonus treat that I didn't see anyone making note of... Man! That was Adam Steffey and Brian Sutton tearing up on mando and guitar (respectively). In my estimation Adam plays with the finest tone of any mando player recording today. He was with Union Station for about five CDs and it is his wonderful intro to "I've Got That Old Feeling" that makes it such a charming recording. Sutton is the young gun introduced a few years back as the guitarist-on-fire in Kentucky Thunder -- Ricky Skaggs' bluegrass band. He has since gone on to be the guitar in the new Dolly Parton bluegrass CDs as well as guesting on CD gems such as those by Aubrey Haynie and touring with the Bela Fleck's "Bluegrass Sessions" band when Tony Rice fell ill. |
