Give us a cup of cider and we'll go to bed
With our wassail etc

3 Little Robin Redbreast as a fine wing
Give us of good zider and we'll begin to sing
With our wassail etc

4 Little Robin Redbreast has a fine leg
Give us of your zider that we be come to beg
With our wassail etc

5 Little Robin Redbreast has a fine toe
Give us of your zider and we'll begin to go
With our wassail etc

6 Your ale it is white, your beer it is brown
Your zider is the very best in all our town
With our wassail etc

7 Your gin it is brew'd from juniper free
Your gin is the best that ever can be

WEST CORNWALL WASSAIL

For the midi click here

O mistress, at your door our Wassail begins,
Pray open the door and let us come in,

Chorus: With our Wassail, Wassail, Wassail,Wassail,
And Joy come to our jolly Wassail

O Mistress, at your door we kindly salute,
For it is an old custom you cannot dispute,

O mistress and Master sitting down by the fire,
While we POOR Wassail-men are travelling thro' the mire,

O Mistress and Master, sitting down at your ease,
With their hands in their pockets to give what they please

Come young men and maidens, I pray you dreaw near;
Come fill up our bowl with some cider or beer,

You see how we'll smile at our flowing Bowl--
Just now it is empty, by and bye it'll be full,

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
A plenty of money and a barrel of beer.

I wish you a blessing and a long time to live
Because you're so free and so willing to give

I hope that your apples will prosper and grow
That you may have cider and a plenty to bestow,

I hope that your barley may prosper and grow,
That you may have beer and a plenty to bestow.

From: hesperis

Wow!

I've had a snippet of lyric stuck in my head all week, and was able to find the song in the DT! Thank you mudcat!

Would people post their favorite wassail song in this thread?

My favorite is the Gloucestershire Wassail:

GLOUCESTERSHIRE WASSAIL

Wassail, wassail all over the town
Our toast it is white and our ale it is brown
Our bowl it is made of the white maple tree
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee

So here is to Cherry and to his right cheek
Pray God send our master a good piece of beef
And a good piece of beef that may we all see
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee

And here is to Dobbin and to his right eye
Pray God send our master a good Christmas pie
A good Christmas pie that may we all see
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee

So here is to Broad Mary and to her broad horn
May God send our master a good crop of corn
And a good crop of corn that may we all see
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee

And here is to Fillpail and to her left ear
Pray God send our master a happy New Year
And a happy New Year as e'er he did see
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee

And here is to Colly and to her long tail
Pray God send our master he never may fail
A bowl of strong beer! I pray you draw near
And our jolly wassail it's then you shall hear

Come butler, come fill us a bowl of the best
Then we hope that your soul in heaven may rest
But if you do draw us a bowl of the small
Then down shall go butler, bowl and all

Then here's to the maid in the lily white smock
Who tripped to the door and slipped back the lock
Who tripped to the door and pulled back the pin
For to let these jolly wassailers in.

The song that was stuck in my head was

HERE WE COME A WASSAILING (2)

Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green
Here we come a-wandering so fair to be seen

Love and joy come to you and to your wassail too
And God bless you and send you a happy New Year
And God send you a happy New Year

We are not daily beggars that beg from door to door
We are your neighbor's children whom you have seen before

God bless the master of this house, likewise the mistress, too
And all the little children that round the table go

A great topic for this morning!
Last night we held our anual credit card wassail. Shopping is over, credit cards worn out time for the real christmas to begin. We will also do it for the traditional celebration but I like a bit of wassail to kick off the real season....

Here you will find our grand collection of wassail songs and tunes:
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/5567/wassail.html

You will also find a link to our new wassail hymnal/handbook

If you dont get access because page is too popular you can go here:

Enjoy!

Who once again set the fire department packing once they saw the huge wassail pot over the bonfire in the pit. Its for cooking you see....
Knowing that some neighbor was hostile I got out the trumpet and seranaded with "rough music" wassail throughout the rest of the night.

Lyric Add: WASSAIL SONG
(Coll. & arr. by Cecil J. Sharp)

Wassail and wassail all over the town,
The cup it is white and the ale it is brown;
The cup it is made of the good old ashen tree,
And so is our beer of the best barley.

To you a wassail! Aye, and joy come to our jolly wassail.

O maid, O maid, with your silver-headed pin.
Pray open the door and let us all in,
All for to fill our wassail bowl and so away again.

To you a wassail! Aye, and joy come to our jolly wassail.

O maid, o maid, with your glove and your mace,
Pray come unto this door and show your pretty face,
For we are truly weary of standing in this place.

To you a wassail! Aye, and joy come to our jolly wassail.

O master and mistress, if you are so well pleased,
Pray set all on your table your white bread and your cheese,
And put forth your roast beef, your porrops and your pies.

To you a wassail! Aye, and joy come to our jolly wassail.

O master and mistress, if we've done any harm,
Pray pull fast this door and let us pass along,
And give us hearty thanks for singing of our song.

To you a wassail! Aye, and joy come to our jolly wassail.

No. 92, with score, voice and piano, in Cecil J. Sharp, "One Hundred English Folksongs," For Medium Voice, pp. 214-216, 1916 (1975, Dover Pub., NY).

The ceremony is performed on January 5 (Eve of Epiphany). Sharp gives no information on this song but mentions others including "Somersetshire Wassail."

Down here in Cornwall we have the 'Bodmin Wassail' and the wassail that Mike O'Connor wrote for our Apple Trees when they were a year old, 'Wassail the Silver Apple' also known as the 'Kit Hill Wassail'.

Subject: Lyr Add: Old Xmas a song of the Wassail Bowl 1842
From: *#1 PEASANT*

Curious use of mythology but interesting

1842
Old Christmas,
A Song of the Wassail Bowl

They say that bright Venus, when she came to wean us
From prudence, and bind us to love, boy;
Blush'd up in a glow, from the sea-drops below,
And took flight for the palace of Jove, boy!
Old Christmas was born on a frostier morn,
But with full as much warmth in his soul, sir;
Jove's nectar his sea; like a spirit-king, he
Burst forth into life from the bowl, sir!
Burst fresh into life from the bowl, sir!
From the bowl, sir!
Burst fresh into life from the bowl, sir!
Ho,ho! for Christmas! on Island, sea or isthmus,
There's no old boy brings so much joy
As jolly, holly Christmas!

He came up to town, in a green thorny crown,
Cold stuck his frost-coat and all felt it;
But he ne'er threw it off, for men soon 'gan to quaff
Of the stuff that was certain to melt it!
His coat wouldn't stay, but, dissolving away,
Drop by drop, of departure gave warning,
Till old Christmas was found, stark naked and drown'd,
In the very same bowl he was born in!
Was born in!
The very same bowl he was born in!
Ho,ho! for Christmas! on island, sea or isthmus!
There's no old boy brings so much joy
As jolly, holly Christmas!

When Venus went mad for Adonis, dull lad,
Who was killed by a boar for his folly,
To a sweet purple flow'r he turn'd in an hour;-
When Christmas died he turn'd to Holly!
Venus got her fair swain leave to live once again;
So Bacchus got Christmas permission
To be born every year from his wassail-bowl cheer,
And to die in its happy perdition!
Perdition!
To die in its happy perdition!
Ho, ho! for Christmas! on island, sea, or isthmus!
There's no old boy brings so much joy
As jolly, holly Christmas!

This was going to be a Wassail song when it started off in my head but turned into something else. (Very little begging but lots of trees!) I think the chorus sounds a bit wassail-like though. https://soundcloud.com/sthomason-1/wassail

It fell out of my head whilst in Leicestershire – not a county reknown for its wassail traditions.
