17 Dec 02 - 02:48 AM (#848703) Subject: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice Some of you may know that I live in the same town as the Gibson Guitar plant in Montana. Tonight at the Christmas high school orchestra and choir concert it was announced that Gibson Guitar and the local music shop, Music Villa, have donated a Gibson guitar to be raffled as a fund raiser for the school music program. The tickets are $6 or two for $10. I saw a photo of the guitar on display and the retail price was $3,000 (if I remember rightly). I will get more details on the guitar and a photo if possible tomorrow. If anyone is interested in supporting the school program and getting a chance at this guitar, let me know. I will find out from the school tomorrow about how out-of-towners can participate in the raffle. 18 Dec 02 - 12:51 AM (#849437) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice It finally snowed in Bozeman. You can see a photo of the location on the web site of the Gibson Montana Division, link above (where the custom acoustic guitars are made). I'm going to talk to the person tomorrow who is in charge of the raffle and let them know that Pay Pal would be a good way to pay for raffle tickets for people living at long distance from here. I'll see if they will set up Pay Pal for an email address for the music dept. By the way, you don't have to be present to win when they do the drawing. Since you have until the end of March to buy tickets, it should be no problem to purchase them by mail. Send an email and get the postal address and the details on sending a check. I'll ask about the guitar case but I haven't seen a mention of it so far. Alice |

18 Dec 02 - 12:57 AM (#849438) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice I just realized there may be some legal issues regarding selling tickets out of state, too, but I will check on that tomorrow and get back to everyone with the info. Alice |

18 Dec 02 - 12:03 PM (#849672) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Bee-dubya-ell I sent an email to Marian Struble at the address Alice linked above. Here is her reply: You may purchase tickets by mailing a check made out to BFOM and mailing it to Bozeman Public Schools Music Office at 404 W. Main, Bozeman, MT 59715. That is if you are in the US somewhere. We are currently checking on the legality of selling tickets overseas. So, it is apparently legal for out-of-staters to buy tickets. Out of U.S. is still up in the air. She didn't mention sending a stamped self-addressed envelope, but I think it would be an appropriate gesture. Bruce NOTE: See this message (click) - the county attorney says people out of state have to buy tickets through a proxy - Alice, for instance. |

18 Dec 02 - 06:27 PM (#849902) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice Hi, Bruce, they will call me when they have the answer from the county attorney regarding selling tickets overseas. I volunteered to deal with mailing to Mudcatters and donate the postage cost to the Music Dept if that becomes a problem, especially for international mailing. ALice |

18 Dec 02 - 06:46 PM (#849919) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: John in Brisbane Alice, I'm a rabid fund-raiser and wouln't want to see money 'wasted' on international postage. If and when tickets are available to overseas residents I'd be happy to not see a printed ticket - assuming that the evidence of sale was held in trust somewhere. Regards, John |

18 Dec 02 - 06:51 PM (#849924) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice Thanks, John, I'll be talking with the Music Dept head again and will mention that to her. Sending a self addressed envelope with payment would help, as Bruce suggested. I was also talking to one of the people today about using Pay Pal once we know where they legally stand regarding international sales. Alice |

18 Dec 02 - 07:14 PM (#849944) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice By the way, BFOM in their mailing address stands for "Bozeman Friends of Music" a group of volunteers (mostly parents of music students) that work to provide funds for music education from Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Bozeman Public Schools. The money goes to fund scholarships, trips for the orchestra, band or choirs to travel to a competition (they take turns each year rotating which group goes on a trip). Scholarships for kids are money to be applied toward workshops, lessons or instruments. My son last year applied for a scholarship to get a decent violin bow. He had to write an essay and get a recommendation from the orchestra teacher. The BFOM gave him a scholarship of $250 to apply to the purchase of a violin bow. He worked to get the rest of the money. Without this group of volunteers doing fund raising and giving their time to put on the spring talent show, the schools would not have the great music programs that they have now. Thanks to all for your support. Alice |

18 Dec 02 - 07:28 PM (#849956) Subject: RE: GIBSON Guitar Raffle, Funds for School From: Alice Hi, Mary, I'm sure the school wants to be careful about what they do with this legally. They certainly would be surprised to have to ship the guitar somewhere that it legally wasn't supposed to be won. So, I'm hoping this all works out that it is ok so sell out of the country. Today I was talking to the parent volunteer who is the head of the raffle committee and she was telling me that they had to be careful not to raffle something that was not over $5000 in value. The Hawk's Night Live talent show where the drawing will be held is a HUGE event here in Bozeman. It runs two nights, is on the largest stage in town (same place the opera performs) and is always a sell out crowd - lots of students audition to be in, sometimes in more than one act between the two nights. It is the biggest fund raiser for the music department and is videotaped, done very well. Students from the speech class, dressed in tuxedos, do the MC job between acts. There is high tech lighting, stage set ups, etc. and it is amazing how professionally all these students turn out, including the stage crews. The MC guys are witty and entertaining, the acts creative and talented and wide ranging, from acting to arias to dance and more. An awesome jazz trio was one of the winners last year. Many prizes are donated by the community for the prizes given on the two night event. The talent show is open only to the high school students. The audience waits with bated breath to hear the winners announced and will, I am sure, be very interested this year in the Gibson raffle. I hope Gibson does this every year from now on!! Alice |

30 Mar 03 - 10:36 AM (#921741) Subject: THE WINNER..GIBSON Guitar Raffle From: Alice The drawing was held last night on the second night of Hawk's Night Live, the annual talent showcase, And the Winner is... Fern Hoolan. (Not a Mudcatter, but I had my fingers crossed for all of you.) Thank you to everyone who participated to support the Bozeman school music program. The money raised goes to scholarships for students to attend music camps and music lessons or help in purchasing instruments or instrument repair. Mudcatters contributed $270 to the raffle, and the funds are GREATLY APPRECIATED. There are video/DVD recordings of the two night performances if anyone is interested in seeing the talented young musicians. Contact http://www.bozeman.k12.mt.us/music/ for information on how to get a video or DVD. One young man sang his original song, Dreaming Shoes - powerful lyrics, had me close to tears. From original compositions to classical concertos to Santana and jazz, the high school student performers were excellent. There were 48 performances over the two nights involving hundreds of students. Thank you all!! Sincerely, Alice |
