17 Dec 02 - 09:16 AM (#848846) Subject: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: GUEST,vixen @ work Dear Mudcats-- As many of you know, my partner Reynaud plays a plethora of stringed instruments. What I want to give him for a gift is a stand that will hold (ideally) his mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and guitar. Given that so far I haven't been able to find anything that will do this, and assuming that in actual fact he'll be playing one while the other three are at rest (we're looking into grafting extra arms onto him...) a stand that holds three will probably suffice. All the three-instrument stands I've found, however, are for guitars, with the "bottom" support way down by the bottom of the stand, which won't do for the mandolin or fiddle. I'm sure somebody somewhere makes what I'm looking for, and I'm equally sure that somebody on the Mudcat knows about it! Any and all assistance is gratefully appreciated! V |

The three-instrument hanging stand worries me because the banjo is so dad-blasted heavy--I'm afraid it will either weaken/break its neck from hanging or tip over the whole stand because it outweighs the other three instruments combined. I'm not in the UK, but I did check out The Music Room website. I didn't see what I'm looking for, and it would probably take too long to get here. I had no idea when I started looking for this kind of thing that it would be so difficult to find! Thanks again for the help! V |

The banjo and guitar can rest gently on the floor, while the mando and the fiddle are WAY light enough to 'hang' from the pub prop! And they can be broken down to NOTHING for ease of carry! :-) |

I actually had to modify the neck-hold (a U shaped piece of metal covered with surgical tubing) for my Martin by bending the U in a tighter circle, but the other two U's held my long neck and my six string banjo all at one time. The stand comes in two pieces, which are slid into eachother and fixed with a tension thumb screw. The base is a tripod very like a mic stand. The whole thing cost me about $40 and should be available to order through any music store. Good Luck |

18 Dec 02 - 03:13 PM (#849757) Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: Leadfingers I use a triple stand and hang a D35 Martin.a Maya mastertone copy 5 string banjo and a Docherty mandolin on.I modified with a leather covered cardboard box th hold a set of whistles They all set there quite happy until needed,and the fact that the backrest is way below the mandolin doesnt affect it,nor the weight of the banjo.But I do have Pub Props as well for informal sessions. |

So far, I'm very happy with mine. It works fine on my guitard, fiddle and mandolin, as well as my normal-sized banjos. It doesn't work well on a short-necked banjeaurine, which is too short to rest on the floor and too heavy to hang from the PubProp. I suspect that tenor banjos and banjo-mandolins may encounter a similar problem. Brian's instrument rest may prove to be the answer for these--I'm still eperimenting.
