29 Dec 02 - 01:19 PM (#855052) Subject: BS: Little Hawk - Getting a Life??? From: Little Hawk Hello, friends! Having spent 3 weeks at the Ashram in Trinidad, where my days were absolutely FILLED with extremely meaningful and USEFUL activities...which strengthened and improved me as a human being, instead of just keeping my restless mind occupied... I am now taking a good look at my daily life back here in Ontario and I'm reassessing a few things. Most of my time here (aside from earning my living) is being WASTED. I am wasting it: 1. yakking on Mudcat 2. surfing the net 3. playing wargames on the computer (Civil War Generals II, at the moment) 4. debating with people to no particular purpose that I can see about things that we are not in much position to change and about which we have limited information anyway, coloured by our prejudices and personal background. When I was in Trinidad, I spent about 10 minutes out of that whole 3 weeks on a computer. The rest of the time I was engaged in REAL life, with real people, with physical reality, with music, with gardens, with exercise, etc.... Now not that you guys aren't real people, but...all this virtual reality is robbing me of a mortal life that is all too short anyway. And for what? It's silly. I am just letting you know that I will probably be on here a lot less in future. (Hopefully, anyway!) My good wishes to each and every one of you, and may you thoroughly enjoy being exactly who you are! Special good wishes to Amos, Bobert, Spaw, Hesperis, CarolC, DougR, Rick Fielding, Oakley, day-liah, McGrath, Khandu, and...well, I can't think of everyone special right now, so sorry if I overlooked you! I'm not disappearing, I'm just trying to break a pointless addiction that is getting me nowhere useful. Peace on Earth. (Shatner Lives! Ha! Ha!) Cheers, George |

29 Dec 02 - 01:31 PM (#855063) Subject: RE: BS: Little Hawk - Getting a Life??? From: Rick Fielding Bravo George! Every so often my terminal curiosity about the bizarre behaviour of human beings gets the best of me and I find that I've spent two straight hours on the computer, either looking for the tiniest clue pointing out who actually wrote Shakespeare, killed JFK, or what the current playlist of some Russian radio station is. OK, that should tell me that I'm becoming something I don't wanna be.....but THEN I start looking at Mudcat to see who wins the championship of being the SECOND poster in most of the time. Yup I've collected lots of silly statistics while trying to tell myself it's good for my mind!!! On the other hand....I HAVE virtually stopped watching TV! Cheers Boy. Go have fun. Rick |

30 Dec 02 - 07:30 AM (#855183) Subject: RE: BS: Little Hawk - Getting a Life??? From: Willie-O A few years ago my PC died and I was happy without it for several months. Summertime and all. This year I finally got a laptop cause I'm in school. Now it goes with me everywhere. Which is semi-convenient. I'm always looking for a phone jack (or ethernet jack) to plug it into. But I'm happiest when doing stuff outdoors without reference to a screen. Cutting back is probably harder than quitting, but it's a good thing to know what balance is best for you. Simply, though, you gotta have something to replace it with. We have this habit of being some kind of busy... However LH I think you are a skilful debater with generally well-informed, nuanced viewpoints. It's not a waste of time for those of us who get to read your postings. Willie-O (middle name George) |

Could you send me a PM with an e-mail address or phone number so we can get hold of you if you're not reading the Mudcat? |

Oakley, I do indeed hope to meet you in Twillingsgate one day, striding down the street hand in hand with the adorable Ms Rutledge, as seems to be your proper destiny! Banjer - Geez, I thought Conrad was out of touch, but you are totally gone! You are either a very funny man or the most lamentable idiot on this whole forum. Matter of fact, I avoid Florida by choice. Take your steenkin' condos and shove 'em, capitalist pig! I urinate contemptuously on your Kennedy Space Center! :-) - LH |

30 Dec 02 - 10:40 AM (#855262) Subject: RE: BS: Little Hawk - Getting a Life??? From: gwonya Look after your machine folks. Use it, don't lose it - and if you're physically slowing down in a big hurry find a way to get it back while you still can. I work in Emerg and am witness to the consequences of inactivity everyday. These consequences can be nightmarish and present very suddenly. The Tom Waits line "yeah well you can't live in the present forever" is one I've borrowed occasionally but would caution you not to let things ride physically too long. Try to exercise everday - forget about 2 or 3 times a week. Your body will thank you in all kinds of ways. End of sermon. Keep pickin Geo. Steve Reg.N |

From: Bobert Little Hawk: Hey, my friend, maybe it's in the air of the water, who knows but this ol' Wes Ginny hillbilly has been cuttting way back on pudder time over the last two or three weeks. Can't explain it other than to say that I have other things that need attention. Like a house full of junk that needs a good dusting (or de-dusting... never figured that one out...), like a purdy wife that needs a few extra hugs, like a Martin guitar that used to get at least an hour a day of attention and lately, other than playing parties is lucky to get 10 minutes of Bobert time, like...like...like... (Speakin' of like, like , like, I still owe you a tape and that requires me to get my boney ol' Wes Ginny butt off der pudder and into my makeshift recording shack.) Well, I ain't gonna go cold turkey here, Little Hawk, and I don't think you are either so I reckon we'll be running into each other now and then in the Catbox but between those times, here's liftin' my glass to you, my friend. Break a leg and.... Godspeed.... Bobert |

From: DougR Well, George, I assume you will never see this, but on the other hand you didn't say you wouldn't peek in from time to time. I think the "time off" will be good for you. It will allow you some to time to check into the realities and advantages of a capitalistic system such as the one we have here in the good old USofA, and perhaps you can bone up on your lack of knowledge of conservatism. Both are subjects that I believe you could gain much from knowing more about. Perhaps you will even return as a Conservative! Too much to ask that you become a Republican, but there is always hope. Some time away from these left-wingers might knock some sense into you noggin. Anyway, have a good time and pop in from time to time if only to read what everyone is writing about you! After all, us conservatives (all three or four of us) won't have you to "kick around" anymore. DougR DougR |

Little Hawk responded. Oh, woe! I didn't! /:( Eb |

31 Dec 02 - 08:27 AM (#855861) Subject: RE: BS: Little Hawk - Getting a Life??? From: Jerry Rasmussen Well, Golly, I guess I should fess up and say that I spend a lot of time here. I can understand what you're saying LH, and I don't think many of us on here just want a cyber life. Your comments bring back a conversation I had with someone who said "I only sing universal songs." I'm a firm believer in meaningful conversations and off-computer experiences as I'm sure everyone on here is. I'm also a firm believer in fun. Even Native Amuricans knew the importance of fun. Having a good time is as necessary a part of "real" life as is having a "meaningful" experience. And meaningful experiences happen all the time for me, here on Mudcat. If they didn't, I'd still be coming here, because I usually have a good time here, whether I'm on Mudchat, or reading threads. I also find Mudcat challenging, intellectually and spiritually. And often, just plain dumb... which can either be fun as it often is for me, or just dumb for me, but fun for someone else. Like the endless threads on William Shatner which so many people have enjoyed. There is a fellowship (and ladyship?) on Mudcat that is of great value to me. And obviously to a lot of others. Some of it is very meaningful to me, some of it is just enjoyable. Some is of very little interest to me. Sounds remarkably like "real" life. No one wants to waste time, LH. I sure don't. If you feel the need to explore other experiences, that's great. May the Force Be With You. If you feel like dropping in just to have a good time, I look forward to seeing you in here again. Meanwhile, I think I'll see if Sorcha, or jimmyt or Leadfingers or all my other friends are in Mudchat yet. Jerry |
