BS: What are your new years resolutions

Subject: BS: What are your new years resolutions
From: rock chick

Well so many times I make them and they last about a week, maybe a month, but this year I will stick to them, I hope!

1. To practice what I preach!
2. To try to understand people better.
3. Practice my music more.
4. Be more patient (thou I think I am very patient)
5. More play, less work, (I wish, money permitting)
6. Visit friends more.
7. Help others more.
and last to give a little more time for me, which i haven't done
   for a very long time.

Oh dam I think that's enough for one year.

2) Enhance my dislike for Dick Cheney
3) Sharpen my contempt for John Ashcroft
4) Whet my scorn for Donald Rumsfeld
5) Resist the urge to become a Republican, no matter how miniscule
6) Eat only food derived from vegetable or animal sources
7) Spend either more, less, or the same amount of time in cyberspace
8) Play music as often or as seldom as I feel inclined
9) Continue to not watch television
10) Make only resolutions that I know I'll be able to keep

Oh yeah.... the really important one... I SHALL NOT add to my Bodhran collection. Now, tippers, that's another story.... since I auctioned my collection off in favour of the House Of Nazereth, I may (hehe) have to gather more, or make 'em, since I made templates for all of 'em.... is that illegal ? I don't sell them... only offer them to fellow Hranners.

Eh bye ? Details ? Mugshot ? My "details" have been posted to the Cafe through my posts over the last year or so and my mugshot isn't worth posting. I only do custom tippers for musicians I "know". Although, if I do say so myself, the Bird's Eye Maple tippers I have fashioned are much appreciated and renowned amongst those who use them.

The two I posted to a friend's website:

1) Do at least two recording sessions for the album I've been yapping to my friends about doing since mid-1999.

2) Do a major update to my website, including getting all my songs on line, with sound files for the originals, and putting together a photo gallery of buildings I've been the structural engineer for.

get my kids making and selling some things with me. I'm in favor of child labor I guess.

general rule, finish things or throw them out.

1) To have a second CD in release by Thanksgiving 2003.

2) To have the duet act with singer/songwriter Sandy Andina rehearsed and working by the spring of 2003.

3) To have enough of my ducks in a row, as it were, by this time in 2003 that I can, once again, be making a full-time living from music by the spring of 2004.

Happy New Year and good luck to all.

...to finish more of the things I start.
...to stop having morbid, go-nowhere thoughts about death and dying.
...to be as good as I can be at my job, even though I do not get paid enough and have no benefits.
...to find joy and wonder in something every day.
...to tell that guy I like that I have a crush on him...oh, wait, already did that! (too bad he started seeing someone else not long ago; should not have waited to make it a New Year's resolution!)

I never make New year resolutions because you always break them eventually.

However if I did make a new years resolution it would be, to be nice to people, which I won't because I try and be nice to people however it's hard when you're a crabbit auld bastard like me.

I used to resolve to drink more beer, smoke more hash and try to get more women into bed than in any previous year. These days I prefer wine, smoke nothing and age has left the womanising aspirations an unlikely fantasy. Instead I resolve to wish all Mudcatters a very happy, healthy, peaceful and successful New Year. Alan.

Bee-dubya-ell - I loved your list. I could substitute the names of local right-wingers if I was so inclined to make resolutions.

I no longer make them as every day is the start of a new year & I have left many a broken resolution behind me in the past.

Fred Miller & Peg's mentions of finishing things is a bit of a worry as I gaze around at many unfinished items. This morning I glued some earrings back on a doll - the earrings had fallen off at least 10 years ago if not 15 ...

Last year I made a lot of resolutions
I broke each one, as people always do.
In spite of that I'm not a bit discouraged
So here's my plans for nineteen-thirty-two.

I got inebriated in 1931,
On Barclay's, Bass and Guiness
As well as Worthington
So now I'll drink plain water
If I can't get whiskey too
That's my good resolution for 1932!

My Ma-in Law upset me in 1931,
.....
.....
I hear she lies at death's door,
I'm going to pull her through!
That's my good resolution for 1932!

I ran a little drapery shop in 1931
I had a fire last Christmas,
It was a lovely one
I'm going to have another,
'cause the premium's nearly due
That's my good resolution for 1932!

Can't remeber any more of it, off-hand.

Vectis, sure. The first problem I have is all the support and encouragement and good reasons people give me to quit--it makes me want to smoke. Quitting would come naturally to me if it seemed like a hair-brained and ill-advised undertaking.

Sandra--that's pretty funny. It might be fun to have a thread to post things one finally gets around to doing.

I don't make New Years Resolutions, because I make resolutions and decisions all year long. The decision Mister and I made together, though, was that while our schedule is slow in the wintertime, we want to get rid of all the excess junk we don't need or use.

I will never, under any circumstances, take a trip with my mother-in-law again. Karen may go with her to anywhere they wish, but the kids and I will not be going along......period.

I feel certain that this one will be easy to keep as I doubt that the kids and I are ever invited anywhere with her again.

Fred, new member, day*liah, had the same kind of reaction to the reasons to quit smoking. In her own way, she worked through it inthis thread. It was a fascinating process which may be helpful. When she started posting to it, she was very adamant about not quitting.

From the inimitable Spike jones and his City Slickers I offer this gem, "This Is My New Year's Resolution". Enjoy!

This is my New Year's resolution.

When my mother-in-law begins to yell and shout.
Through the window, I would like to throw her out,
But I resolve not to do it. Here is why.
I'm afraid of hitting someone passing by.

This is my New Year's resolution.

When I'm at the movies watching a love scene,
And a lady's hat is blocking half the screen.
I resolve not to shout, "Take off that hat!"
I'll remove it gently with a baseball bat.

This is my New Year's resolution.

When I take a lovely lady out to eat,
And she orders caviar instead of meat.
I resolve to let the lady have her fill,
And of course I'll also let her pay the bill.

This is my New Year's resolution.

When I'm sitting with my wifey on the bus,
And a dear old lady stands in front of us.
I resolve to be a gentleman discreet.
I'll politely offer her my wifey's seat.

This is my New Year's resolution.

When my mother says, "Come in. It's time to eat."
And I keep on playing games out in the street.
I resolve to rush right home now when I'm called.
Cuz my pop just bought a hairbrush and he's bald.

This is my New Year's resolution.

On the radio this year I hope to score,
With some funny jokes I've never told before.
I resolve not to tell a corny joke.
Hello. What's that? The church burned down. Holy smoke!

This is my usual revelation.

In this coming year I'm going to be discreet.
Have the Slickers playing music soft and sweet.
I resolve to treat Tchaikovsky tenderly,
And set his second movement off with TNT.

First of all, I don't agree that people always break their resolutions. For the past three years, I've kept my resolutions simple, fun-even-if-diffecult, and made sure they had a tangible end result -- some thing or event that I could look back on and say: "This was my contribution to the world this year."

And I've kept all three of those resolutions. It feels wonderful. When the years have drawn to a close, and I've looked back, the success of completing my long term goals makes all the yuckiness and sorrow of the year pale in comparison.

It's a trend I intend to continue.

So this year, I resolve to:

(A) Write some fiction every day, even if it is only a single scene. I've chosen this, because although I've done a lot of writing over the past year, whenever I tried to write fiction, I found myself in the grips of a panicky sort of writer's block. Writing poetry and essays allows me to seperate myself from my subject -- to view it from some artistic distance, as if I were looking down at it from above. But in writing fiction, I have to get inside the life of my viewpoint character, and open myself up to all the pain and joy that that character feels. It's riskier, and it's something I haven't done enough of in the last couple of years.

and:

(B): To finish writing and designing a board game that has been ratting around in my head as an idea for the better part of a decade.

(one more of those "finish what I start" resolutions!)

Kat, thanks for the thread ref. From that and another thread I get the idea Daylia and I may have some things in common, but I really enjoyed the comments of Yuk, which sound like common sense but are exquisitly wrong. I'm not adamant about not quiting though, like dying or going to the dentist, it's something one means to get around to, sometime or other.

My child-labor resolution is shaping up. We're starting a misfortune cookie business, researching prices, marketing ideas, writing jokes together. I'm optomistic it's one of my better dad-projects.
