Hi Gang,

Just to let you know some good news for a change about Jake Thackray. We (the JT project) *appear* to have persuaded EMI to release a new compilation of JT songs in April 2003. Title undecided, but may be along the lines of "The Very Best Of Jake Thackray" or "The Definitive JT" etc, and will be a selection of the most representative tracks from Jakes work. You can keep up to date in the Topica Forum (see below). EMI are even letting us choose the title, tracklist and write 1000 words for sleeve notes :)

I have backed out of the new project as I don't really have the time anymore, but we still have a strong group all with shoulders to the wheel !

Best Wishes to all, thanks for the great comments. All messages from all Forums are being passed over to his family soon at the funeral to let Sheila and the boys know how much he meant to us.

My Ma bought me a Jake Thackray CD for Christmas the year before last, I can't remember what it's called (it's at home, I'm at work).

As a Jake Thackray fan of many years standing I was appalled at it's quality of production. It appeared to be a fairly old recording the great man himself singing as well as ever, but with orchestral backing that seemed to have been 'laid' over the top of the original sound track. Totally out of character

It sounds terrible, completely ruining Jake's excellent (as ever) performance. This is not the way I want to remember one of my heroes, and probably the most entertaining performers I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

If a 'Best of Jake Thackray' or whatever CD is produced, I sincerely hope it will be of Jake and his guitar only. Surely that is how Jake would have liked his songs to be remembered.

John

We are certainly working for an *orchestral free* (or very limited) CD, but this will be in the hands of EMI. We have been invited to select from the recordings at Abbey Rd, but without actually going there and listening, it is impossible to know what we have.

Your CD is the EMI IDEAL "Lah Di Dah" CD available for about GBP6-99 from the first link in my previous post. It's not *that* bad, but it *is* orchestrated. For the very best songs, try and get hold of "Jake Thackray Live" on EMI LP or "Jake Thackray and Songs" on Dingle LP. Neither are out on CD, but we did lift a few live tracks for our existing double CD (now sold out - sorry).
