Fielding does it again

I used to think I knew a ton of nerdy information about music. That was until I ran into Rick Fielding right here at the 'Cat. I try to listen to his show every week just to prove to myself how little I actually know. Tonight he played his trump card, three Washington Phillips songs played on a dolciola. I have to admit, I have never heard of Washington Phillips, and I sure as heck have never heard of a dolciola, but I enjoyed it. Then Peter T. arrived just before he played the third tune, Rick said he was going to sneak in another Washington Phillips song, Peter pipes in "oh, the dolciola".

I'm out of my league here folks.

Yeah, but he doesn't know the port of Portsmouth NH is on the seacoast!
Was a great show. The dulceola (or however it's spelled) sounds so odd on blues tunes. Good though!

There was a thread about this some time ago, which is how I knew! Steve neglects to mention that Rick also played some of his sister's fab new record. yours, Peter T.

Hey Jeri,

I think that Rick is the world's foremost expert on Folk and Blues music and baseball, very good on some other things, but this knowledge was gained by ignoring things like Geography.

Oh, my God, is he in jail again? Did he walk out of the 12th Fret with another $12,000 guitar and leave a cheap Winston in its place? I told him they were onto that trick...

Oh.

Well, that's a relief. I bet it was a great show, eh?

Peter,

I searched the 365 days for Dolciola, Dulciola & Washington Phillips and didn't find anything. Can you help? What an interesting sounding instrument.

Rick compared tuning one to tuning an Autoharp. I thought back to Doc Watson discussing tuning an autoharp with Mother Maybelle Carter on "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". She said that she just buys a new one instead of trying to tune.

Thanks for mentioning Susan's CD.

Jed, syndicated, how about televised with Rick playing the various intsruments? Kind of like Antiques Roadshow meets the Smithsonian.

Well I AM touched! Or is that "tetched"?!

Washington Phillips, his music, his Dolceola, and the mystery that has surrounded him for so many years, has been an absolute kick for me.

Keeerist the guy was good......and sooooo original I can hardly describe his sound to anyone who hasn't heard him.

I was turned on to him by Sandy Paton (natch) and REALLY turned on to his story by my friend Andy Cohen, perhaps the most "Alive" man I've ever met.

Tonight I discussed Phillips, Paul Mason Howard, and a weird little instrument, that was born, lived a bit, died, and was reborn.

T'is fun.

Rick

P.S. I haven't looked at the "Please find my movie" thread yet, but I sure hope someone has....'cauz Heather now thinks I DID dream it!!

Rick and Peter T. know that I'm a Willie fanatic, tonight was the first time I'd heard the Townes Van Zandt version. Very nice. Is he related to the Lynyrd Skynyrd Van Zandt's?

A Willie fanatic? Steve, have you ever thought of going in to politics?

Well Steve.....we DIDN'T know that you are a "willie fanatic", but we'll keep it quiet.

Nope, Townes wasn't related to Ronnie. (I don't think so anyway)

LEPUS REX FOUND MY MOVIE!! "Strangers" it was called...and yes, it seems to have been a skin flick.....and since Gazzara appears to have made more movies than any other human, he sure didn't need the money....trust me, was his co-star ever cute!

Amos,

I'd last about 1/2 a day as a politician. Besides, I'm far too young. The mayor of Mississauga (just west of Toronto) is 82, been in office since '78 and and just announced she is running for another term.

Washington Phillips has been (well) recorded, as has Andy Cohen. You can get their CDs at CAMSCO Music.
