08 Jan 03 - 08:18 PM (#862120) Subject: Found a grat music site! From: michaelr Sometimes being on junk mail lists can be a good thing. In my mailbox today I found a catalog from Collector's Choice Music, a mail order company that specializes in re-releases of classic albums, many of them imports. They have music from the 1940s through the 1980s, in categories such as Big Band, British Invasion, Broadway, Classical, Comedy & Old Radio, Country, Film Soundtracks, Folk, Folk Rock & Psychedelia (note: grouped together!), Jazz, Ochestral Favorites, Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriters. I found several CDs I'll order immediately, such as re-releases of Gene Clark's classic 1973 solo album "No Other", and several by British art-folk band Curved Air. But there's stuff in here for every musical taste! (well, excepting rap) Just thought I'd share that with the `Cat. The website is www.collectorschoicemusic.com. Cheers, Michael |

The other point I'd make is that I have picked up several long out of print CDs for way less than the cost of current CDs by bidding on eBay. One of my greatest finds was a CD by the Chico Hamilton Quintet which was released only in Japan... nobody else bid for it on eBay, so I got it for next to nothing. I even got a fine CD of early country music because I was the high bidder at a penny.... Mostly, it's been a long haul replacing some of my albums with CDs. Many of them were either never available on CD, or are out of print.. Jerry |

In other words, to seek it in a shop you'd first have to be aware of its existence. I expected there would have to be some fellow `Catters who are familiar with the company. Cheers, Michael |

Actually, no they all can't... my wife got me a tompall and the glaser bros. collection from them that is one of their exclusives. And as Michael said, many of the imports- if you don't know some of those cool Bear family sets exist, you can't special order them. I often buy from village records and elderly instruments, also. Village in particular has great customer service, is really good about passing along promos or samplers, takes trades and has some exclusive Tom Russell and Dave Alvin things. Recommended in my book. Working in a college town, the flavors at the local stores here are definately geared toward alternative and well, college-radio type music. Folk sections are rudimentary at best, and special orders, especially on imports, seem to take forever and sometimes just never come in at all. I try to mix up my purchases, actually, to support both local shops, good mail order places, and directly from artists when I see them perform (unless they're charging significantly more than I can easily find the disc for elsewhere, y'know?) jim |
