09 Jan 03 - 08:31 AM (#862470) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Shhhhh - it's more likely to be End of Club if you advertise that. Mind you, beside the would-be muscleman who posted previously, you will usually find those fair maidens Rock Chick and DipsoDeb and Essex Girl and myself have been known to turn up. |

09 Jan 03 - 09:08 AM (#862507) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: cockney I can assure mudcat people that there is no virus on our webpage. I don't know why Mr Happy is saying don't click it. The reason that the link posted by "guestelric crapton" did not work is because he was uaing the wrong URL try this one FolkMob We have Derek Brimstone appearing on 29th January. Dave Kenningham IS a regular at our club, he is probably one of the finest performers in London at the moment. |
09 Jan 03 - 10:25 AM (#862571) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Noreen elric crapton had merely omitted the http:// prefix, so the server tried to find the website within Mudcat and was unsuccessful. Site looks very interesting and informative, thanks! If I'm ever travelling your way... |

12 Jan 03 - 07:14 PM (#865482) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dipsodeb of course one must realise that Mr Kenningham is only into black russians, then again, iv'e never known him to be a racist, he'll drink any coloured drink. ;0) |

15 Jan 03 - 04:10 PM (#867727) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick No idea, please don't start another rumour. Essex Lady may not like it!! |
16 Jan 03 - 08:32 AM (#868221) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Folkman well I went to this club and I thought it was crap! There was this cranky old age pensioner croaking "mona lisa" and some bloke with a Kinks songbook in front of him strumming bum notes. The compere was a half wit who couldn't remember who he was introducing and didn't know what a harmonica was - "one of those things you blow" Then they had the cheek to charge me £2 Avoid this place |
16 Jan 03 - 09:21 AM (#868257) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Essex Girl In reply to 'Folkmans' comments, the Tudaor Barn is advertised as an 'acoustic' club rather than a pure folk club. Did Folkman go there to sing himself? On some nights they have some very good singers/musicians. This club does need more support and will accept aalmost any sort of music. So turn up folks and show us what you can do. On 29th January they have Derek Brimstone (see separate thread) An evening not to be missed. So TURN UP . without support clubs will close so use it or lose it. |
16 Jan 03 - 10:51 AM (#868330) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Mugwump Yes I agree with Essex girl. this Wednesday was not a paticularly good night, but it's only as good as people want to make it. |
16 Jan 03 - 11:17 AM (#868374) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Rock Chick - Essex Lady ? - have you ever been to Essex - esp Harlow where Essex Girl (and McGrath) come from. |
16 Jan 03 - 01:50 PM (#868510) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick Well Folkman, so you didn't like the pub or the people, well maybe they) didn't like you! And the pensioner who you said croaked is a fine singer, elderly maybe but a dedicated supporter who supports all singers, whether they are excellent, shy, beginners or what ever, if they have the nerve to sing in front of people, then they deserve support, not criticism. Maybe you have forgotten what it was like when you started. You know what they say those who have been criticised all their life grow up to be critical!!! That says it all. |
17 Jan 03 - 01:05 PM (#868850) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Mugwump Hear! hear! |
17 Jan 03 - 01:08 PM (#868853) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick You woodn't be taking the Micky out of what i do for a living now wood you? |

17 Jan 03 - 06:48 PM (#869143) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dipsodeb Roxanne The Folk Mob are a friendly bunch of nutters, who meet on a Wednesday night at the Tudor Barn Pub, Well Hall Rd, Eltham. If you go to the Blue Clicky on the first Thread of this page you can get all the info. Come along and try it for yourself.. sometimes it's great and sometimes (rarely) it's crap as can be said for alot of small clubs, as Charles pointed out any night is what you make it. Sorry Folkman, I don't recall you, so you could not have had much of an impact on the evening or it's quality. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it that night. Poor old Bill, he would be devastated if we passed on your comments, and would probably never get up to sing again. One great thing i can say about the Folk Mob is they are tolerant and encouraging to everyone. GET A LIFE! |
18 Jan 03 - 01:21 PM (#869568) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick Hopefully see you sometime then at the Tudor Barn, there a great crowd there. |

20 Jan 03 - 05:29 AM (#870362) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Well, as Linda and I are both card-carrying members of FOLKMOB, we'll try and get there this Wednesday for the singaround. We'll definitely be there for Derek Brimstone the following week. |

22 Jan 03 - 04:34 AM (#872052) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant To all FOLKMOB members - have you contacted your MP yet about EDM 331 which is suggesting changes to the PEL proposals. I've contacted Clive Efford, Eltham's MP, and at last receieved an answer from him saying that he'll have a look at the motion - he still doesn't seem to have signed up though. If you live in Eltham, send Mr Efford a FAX (you can find out how to do it on the above-mentioned thread) he sounds as though he might be swayed. If you don't live in the Eltham constituency, FAX your own MP. |

24 Jan 03 - 07:27 AM (#873657) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant It's a pity that DK's birthday thread has been deleted - perhaps we should send the pictures up for entry in the Mudcat Calendar - The entries from Essex Girl and myself both reveal more bare flesh than DK is showing. OK - Rhona is displaying quite a lot, but it was a paid gig for her - if she was a regular booking we'd pack the place ! |
24 Jan 03 - 08:07 AM (#873672) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick DB why I'm not surprised to hear that response from you. Personally I'm glad it been deleted, not the sort of thing (excuse the pun) to put on Mudcat, anyway Dave wasn't even aware it had been plastered on the site, which is a bit OOT to say the least. |
24 Jan 03 - 08:09 AM (#873674) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Mugwump I can assur you that dave gave his permission - he may have been drunk at the time - but he did. |
24 Jan 03 - 08:15 AM (#873683) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Shelagh - have a look at Micca's photo in last year's Mudcat calendar, all he's wearing is a strategically placed tankard ! Dave Kenningham still had his jeans on. Anyway - the piccies might have improved his image ! |
24 Jan 03 - 08:17 AM (#873684) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick Thats not permission when your drunk. If everyone took up what we said when we were drunk, god we could all be in trouble. |
24 Jan 03 - 08:28 AM (#873696) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick Wasn't talking about what DK had on but what the Lady didn't have on! there is not problem about this for his Birthday surprise, but plastered on the site, bit degrading in my opinion. It's the sort of thing that most men wouldn't have a problem with, note I say most, not all, but as I said it's my personal opinion. |
24 Jan 03 - 08:35 AM (#873705) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Oh god, I hope no-one plans anything like that for my 60th birthday in about 18 months time (hint, hint). I would have thought that pictures showing such an attractive young lady (I assume you'll credit Rhona with that) wrapped round him would quite boost DKs ego. |
24 Jan 03 - 08:42 AM (#873708) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant BTW Charles Atlas - did I overhear you arranging a similiar event for Rock Chick's birthday ? - didn't you managed manage to book Mr Goreham for a half of bitter. |
24 Jan 03 - 11:42 AM (#873857) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Mugwump We'll see what we can do. Mind you, we don't want to upset the older members! |

24 Jan 03 - 12:10 PM (#873879) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: rock chick Dave did not give his permission for this photo and the person who put this on the site didnt even have the balls to use their real name. |
24 Jan 03 - 07:32 PM (#874245) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Mugwump Dave did!! - I've been drinking with him tonight. He said "The only thing wrong with that strippo gram lark, was YOU LOT WERE THERE!" The person who published it does not have a computer, They used mine. So I take full responsibilty, that's why I deleted it the following morning and handed the negative to Dave! Honest Joe |

09 Mar 03 - 11:25 AM (#905869) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Sliding Down The Bannister At My Auntie's House Never heard of him! He's not that old geezer that sings Mona Lisa, is he? |
10 Mar 03 - 04:17 PM (#906793) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Dave I'm trying to remember if Ian Petrie sings Mona Lisa - It's pretty popular now - I think we have Bill G to thank for that - He seems to be singing it as much as I used ( note the used ) to sing Ride On. Can anyone give some more background to Ian Petrie - A good 10mins introduction always goes over well - It shows something that the Tudor Barn club has survived this cold winter - Singers, performers and those who just like to listen etc made the effort to come out on some real bad weather nights. Thanks to everyone who did. The majority of people leave after having a good/very good/excellent night - Sometime it does not work more often than not it does. - And the fact that it has been working for over ten years proves that. Come down to this Wednesday's PA night - I have heard a rumour that Vicky will be appearing and will have available her 1st CD for sale. |
11 Mar 03 - 05:38 AM (#907149) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Ian Petrie sold me my old Yamaha FG180 guitar - but don't hold that against him ! |
11 Mar 03 - 12:34 PM (#907457) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST I hate that place, been a few times, it's always bloody cold the soundman is crap, the guy who runs it, dave kiddingham is a wopsy and all people do is talk through all the acts, if you can call them acts. Its a crap place with crap people. So there, thats my pennies worth. guest |
11 Mar 03 - 03:26 PM (#907614) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,John B Having read Guest comments I cannot wait to go and see what it is like. Nothing can be that bad - Why do they want a sound man in a folk club?. Anyway I shall perhaps go down tomorrow just to see if he or she is right. I do not know much about guitars - Is a Yamaha a guitar - What does FG 180 stand for? |
12 Mar 03 - 06:25 AM (#908054) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dipsodeb Guest NAFF OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
12 Mar 03 - 10:33 AM (#908196) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Woodsie That "guest" definitely wasn't me! Mind you - I have to agree with JohnB why does a folk club have a sound man? A yamaha is a guitar FG180 is just the catalogue no. for that paticular model. Be good to see you down there JohnB! |
12 Mar 03 - 12:05 PM (#908264) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant The question is not so much why does a folk club have a sound man as why does a folk club have a sound system. An unmanaged PA is the worst option of all ! During the 60s and for most of the 70s, Folk Clubs did not need to use sound systems. Occasionally a guest act would bring one with them, but that tended to be the exception rather than the rule. In some large venues (eg Dartford Folk Club amplification is neccessary, but in many others a bit of sensible arrangement makes it perfectly possible to manage without. One of the problems with amplification is that it tends to create a barrier between performer and audience and inhibits audience participation - Linda and I got some strange looks from people, when we joined in with choruses at Dartford recently - even though the guest, Vin Garbutt, had asked everyone to join in. I recently organised a comemorative concert in The Tudor Barn and we decided to do it without the PA. We had a wonderful evening with great chorus singing and none of the performers had any problem getting their songs over, because there was a lot less background noise. |
12 Mar 03 - 06:44 PM (#908562) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Charles atlas I have to agree with Dave. Could the "guest" with no name who posted on this thread on 11th of march (crap place etc) own up? - 'cos I'm getting blamed for it! |

12 Mar 03 - 07:19 PM (#908587) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Dave Sorry about that - I really cannot understand some of the comments on this thread. Tonight some great acts had the opportunity to play at the Tudor Barn -including Vicky who has just released her CD, Bill who has given me the chance to listen to and take in some great new and old songs - Pipper and Matthew who are young and gifted singer/songwriters - Keith who has supported the club for longer than I can remember and who is another gifted songwriter- Brian - another talented artist who plays at numerous local clubs - Kevin - a good singer who somehow gets everyone to join in the chorus - and Mike a newcomer who stayed to the end and asked for details as he wants to revisit. Not to forget Paul on the sax - a superb instrumentalist. There were also those there who could not play since the list was full. Please come along one Wednesday and make your own mind up. You will be very welcome. |

Linda and I are planning to hold one of our folk barbecues two weeks earlier on Sun 8th June. Any beer left over will be re-freshed and donated to Knockholt. |

In fact it is growing very nicely and has had some fantastic performers on recently like Don Mescall for instance now there's a man to watch out for. Excellent guitarist and a prolific and astounding song writer. Walking the Witch will be performing they're 300th gig there on the 5th of Jan 2005, should be a great night. Happy New Year to all you catters and lets hope for a peaceful and prosperous one and keep in our thoughts and hearts all those less fortunate than ourselves. Blessings ~Debs~ |

15 Dec 06 - 07:20 AM (#1910128) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Ted Hi, Have just moved into the South London area & thought about paying this club a visit. I like the website (& venue!), and they've booked some good acts recently. Been around for a while, too, which is always good. Only thing that worries me is they seem to rely on PA a lot. I'm no purist, but have got fed up with being deafened by distorted noise. I see from earlier in this thread that their resident sound engineer (presumably) upset "Guest Folkman". So, anyone been there & can give some unbiased comments? Thanks, Ted |
17 Dec 06 - 05:57 PM (#1912133) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Girl Friday without cookie Hi Ted, welcome to South East London. They only have a p.a. setup on alternate weeks. Next Wednesday is p.a. night. They have the occasional guest on a p.a. night, but the other week they have a singaround. It's a big and well attended club, so don't expect to get more than two songs in. They are quite eclectic in the range of stuff they play/sing, so, give it a try, nothing ventured eh... |
21 Dec 06 - 04:31 AM (#1915490) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Ted Thanks, Girl Friday, sounds good, will have to try them sometime soon. Anyone else been there? Ted |

21 Dec 06 - 08:43 AM (#1915641) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dipsodeb Please go along and see for yourself Ted. If you're not into PA then the singaround nights are just the ticket. You never know what's going to turn up. Last night a new duo turned up who played some fantastic traditional Bretton/Irish tunes, one of the guys miked up a Kalimba it might sound strange but it was very beautiful accompanied by some very fine pipes. They apparently also have a accordion player who was absent last night, but they have been booked for next year March/April? Hope to see you there sometime. ~Debs~ |
21 Dec 06 - 09:15 AM (#1915663) Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Ted Thanks also to John & Debs. With John's sort of write-up, I'll have to look in next year sometime. Thanks, and all of you have a good time over Xmas Ted |
