Aarrrggghh - I have this on a tape somewhere but can't find it and can't remember! I know it's someone Irish, and have a feeling it could be one of Mary Black's brothers. If I can find it I'll post it -

Mary's brother, MICHAEL BLACK, has been singing it around San Francisco for years.
He recorded it with brothers Shay & Michael on their CD WHAT A TIME

Certainly Jez - and I think he wrote it too.   Good song, like all of his.

Jez Lowe, of course, if it's not already become traditional.

Jez Lowe wrote and first recorded the song. There are undoubtedly other recordings of the song , which might or might not be more pleasing to the individual ear.I personally would always give Jez the credit for the song.

Jez Lowe wrote and recorded it but I have also heard it sung by at least two other people locally. It has also been recorded by a group from Gilwern called Broadside(check them out)

i've listened to the Jez Lowe recording, and although it's lovely, it's not the one I'm on about. This was on one of the early Fairport recordings. The singer also does Diamonds and Pearls.

Help please

i've just had a quick surf and THINK I know the album title I heard the song on, Jewel in the Crown.

The name Steve Tilston crops up. He didn't sing it on the album, did he?

Thanks to everyone for answering.

I'm pretty sure Jez only wrote it a couple of years ago. I'll try and find out.

For those who don't know the song , here are the lyrics

LONDON DANNY

London Danny, you're a real bad penny,
The one man time has taught me I should fear
'Cause her you left behind, she said she would be mine
So why'd you have to come and show your face round here?

CHORUS: 'Cause she always said that time would make it right
And now I always hear her sighing in the night
And don't think I don't know, if you asked her then she'd go,
Oh, but please now, don't you take her from me, London Danny.

Well, I've learned to listen for your name round town
When people talk of your success in city life,
But I could never tell, if she heard them talk as well
And rued the day she ever was a poor man's wife.

My hands are black while yours are clean and clever
And there's ways you know to turn her pretty head,
When it's all that I can do, when my working day is through,
To let her heart beat me to sleep at night in bed.

and a sound clip of this song and others can be found here

"Jez wrote it in 1987 and put it on the Bad Penny album that came out then."   - this from Bev Sanders, then a Bad Penny.

(She keeps on turning up)

So there you are!

Yes, Jez Lowe's London Danny is on Fairport's Jewel in the Crown (1995), all lead vocals are by Simon Nicol, with backing vocals from Peggy and Maart.

Simon's voice has matured and improved a lot over the years (some might say it had to) so if you've only heard his younger voice, Deni, you might not recognise it.

Jez Lowe is the songwriter of London Danny.

Jez was at Upton Upon Severn's first folk festival in 1989, (and he sang it then).

He is appearing at Upton's next festival with the Bad Pennies.

This year it is running from the 2nd to the 5th May.
(the First May Bank Holiday)

The festival is in a wonderful riverside setting with views of the Malvern Hills. (8 pubs in the town, camping, venues etc. all within walking distance.)

Last year we were visited by over 50 Morris sides, see the procession, see the dancing, join in the sessions.

See the line up at www.uptonfolk.org.

For fun, folk and frolic, come to this year's Upton.

See you there Mudcats!

Thank you all, and a verbal bouquet to Mr Nichol for that singing. This is what confused me. I looked for more of his recordings and found a solo album, but as you say the voice was still good, but less rich somehow.

Thanks again for all the help.

I first heard it on a Black Brothers CD. But you can just hear that North Country accent when Jez sings it (for instance, "doant" for "don't"). He's written some great songs about growing up in County Durham, too. I think "high part of the town" is maybe the best.
