FSGW Mini Fest 2003

09 Jan 03 - 01:26 PM (#862813)
Subject: FSGW Mini Fest 2003
From: JedMarum

I know there will be some discussion soon, regarding the upcoming FSGW Mini-Fest in February. I will be there for a workshop and/or a concert slot, and I'm looking forward to it very much.

I also had planned to make the trip into a small tour by booking a few supporting dates along the, in MD or along the way home - and I would like to make a few radio shows visits as time/availability allowed. But I've managed to get myself into a bind - my Mom's Alzheimer and other medical problems have kept me riveted to working only the immediate problems at home ... and I've been concerned that I may not even be able to make the trip ... Still I'm determined to do it, but could use a hand.

Can I get a PM from Charlie Baum and/or Rita? We had talked, Rit and I about a possible house concert in MD. Is that still possible to arrange? What are the best radio show hosts in your area to contact about possible visits?

Sorry to be begging on the forum ... I am sure there will be lots of other discussion on the Mini-Fest, so maybe I'll be forgiven for starting out the thread with a little thread creep!

Any suggestions on how to earn a buck and save a buck along the drive from Dallas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Am I correct that this is February 15th 2003?

Is there any "silent auction" at the mini-fest? There is a possiblilty I may be in the area.

Hey Jed,
Glad we're going to see you in these parts for the mini-fest!

It's probably too late to book a house concert around the mini-fest, since our newsletter goes to press tomorrow (January 10), and if it's not in the newsletter, it's really not worth doing because nobody will know about it. Hope Charlie weighs in with a PM to you, since he's the house concert booker for FSGW. You might also want to check the website (www.fsgw.org) to see what else he may have booked around that time. I know we have a house concert on Feb. 1, our Open Sing on Feb. 7, and our monthly program on the 8th.

As for radio hosts, the only one who does live interviews with singers passing through is Mary Cliff at WETA-FM. Go to www.weta.com for a link to her e-mail. Her show airs on Saturday nights from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Or you might try our local internet folk station, hober.com. They sometimes do live events, although I haven't seen any announcements from them about these kinds of things lately.

Safe travels. Sorry to hear about your mom. My dad also has Alzheimer's. It's a bear. PM me, and I'd be happy to tell you about a couple of really helpful books that will help keep YOU from going crazy as a relative/caregiver.
Kathy

Jed, On second thought let's do it here. Kathy is right about the FSGW sponsored event, it's too late for that. But there are other ways to do this thing. I've made a call to the folks who hosted Jerry Rasmussen's House concert here. We're talking about what night. If you send me a promo packet/CD I'll talk to Mary Cliff about airtime and a possible interview. When you have a date and time I'll put items in the City Paper and Washington Post (long shots but they sometimes turn up new folks). And I can personally contact, email and phone people. Plus we can get you free room and board at Chez Fortunato. Just let me know and I'll make it happen, Brother Marum. (and no worries if you do the thing with Rita and Bill, I'll still help out as you wish, and we'll still try to get a session togther at our house before you're on your horse to Dallas.)Chance

I wish I could be there.
For the benefit of the folks in DC, well, the whole gang actually, I had a followup exam yesterday, and the Doctor says he sees nothing wrong in my pipes. So, I will be at FSGW in May. I did a short performance for the old folks at the weekly "Meals for seniors" gathering at a local church. I'm rusty, but that's fixable.
Jed, I sure hope you can do the DC trip. Break a leg!

Kath - thanks. I am taking a Primary Care Giver coourse next week for Alheimer's and other dementia patients. I've also got some study group possibilities. Looks like we have good ALZ resources in Dallas. I look forward to your comments on books, too - I would like to read on the subject.

I know Mary Cliff has been playing tracks from my new CD. In fact she played a few from the old one, as well. I tried to contact her last week, and let her know I'd be out that way for the mini-fest. I'll try again - a word from you or an FSGW person who knows her might help. I am sure she gets buried with requests.

MMario - yes to dates, don't know about silent auction. I hope you can make it!

Great news Kendall. I hope I can make the 2003 FSGW Gathering. It's been a crazy year, so my schedule is not my own these days - but I'd love to get hooked up with you again, and would love to be at the Gathering.

Chance you are a saint! I have not made any arrangements, at this point for anything, so if you have room I would be most appreciative for a spot to through my sleeping bag. And as far the house concert, again; YES PLEASE! Would you PM me with your snail mail address and I'll get a promo package or two off to you via 2nd day quick ship.

By the way, I've been watching the FOLKDJ list to track who's playing the record - that is how I know Mary is playing it. I was thrilled to make the FOLKDJ Most Played Albums list for Nov and Dec at numbers 37 and 24 respectively (hate to miss a chance for a small brag). Mary was helpful in making that happen, by playing it and by reporting her playlists (many don't).

Jed,

I'm not sure what route you take from Dallas to DC, but if it includes I-85/I-40 through North Carolina you will be coming right through Hillsborough, which is a short day's drive to DC (about 5 hours.) We would be pleased to offer a place for you to stay en route.

Jed, You may have posted this note just in the nick of time -- we MAY still be able to set up an official FSGW concert. The biggest advantage is the publicity, our newsletter goes to over 2500 families.

The reason it's not too late, is that as per our emails, Charlie and I have discussed it already and I know he was willing to do it but I don't know whether we've passed his drop-dead date for getting the writeup done, etc. He's out but will call when he comes in.

Jed, I'll phone you this evening if I can find the number anywhere. If it can be done at all, we'll need info for the newsletter.

As to location, our house is available but the house where Jerry R did his concert is a Great space so if we can do it there that would be wonderful.

Fortunato, if I don't reach you by phone then call, e-mail or PM me or better yet PM Bill who actually reads his messages.... :-)

We can have a concert either the 13th or the 14th. Not a good idea to have it on Sunday the 16th because people are going too be too pooped from the minifest.

Since Jed will apparently be staying with Fortunato, Bill and I will probably have room for out of town Mudcatters who come for Jed's concert and/or the Minifest. (Dick Greenhaus and Susan of DT will probably be here -- I hope -- we haven't discussed it yet.

BTW the Minifest is Great.

OK, Jed, I'm so glad you're still interested and we'll see what we can do.

Don, there is a crafts area. I think it's done moderately well in the last couple of years, too. If you think you could make it I'll find out who you should contact.

Mmario, there's no silent auction at the Mini, just at the fall FSGW Getaway where it benefits our Getaway scholarship fund.

The minifest is a full day: workshops from noon to 6, concert in one hall and dance in the other during the evening. Lots of dance, usually one "trad" track and a number of local groups, etc, including groups like a Japanese koto society, Latin performers, all kinds of stuff.

House of Musical Traditions and Cadmus records offer places to spend money as well as various craft vendors and the food vendor (a Jamaican outfit with quite good food.)

End of commercial.

From: Charlie Baum

Jed--There's a PM from me.

Don Meixner (and everyone else who is interested in coming)--

The FSGW minifest is one day, Saturday, February 15, at the Takoma Park Middle School on Piney Branch Road in Takoma Park, Maryland. It's a half-mile from the Takoma Metro station, and there are Ride-On bus routes for those who don't want to walk.

From 11 am until 6 pm, there are 7 or 8 simultaneous programs--dances, singarounds on a topic, jam sessions, storytellers, mini-concerts, etc., in every nook and cranny of the school. Everyone takes a short break for dinner (except us organizer types) and then from 7:30 until 10:30, there's a danc ein the gym and a concert in the auditorium. There are also crafters in the cafetorium during the day, and food is available for purchase there as well

Admission for FSGW members:
$7 half day
$12 full day

For non-members:
$10 half day
$15 full day

Students and children
$5 half day
$7 full day

A half day is either the 11am to 6pm stint or the evening session.
A full day is both.

More details are on the website www.fsgw.org and then click on the MiniFest or scroll down in a calendar until you get to Feb. 15th. Also here . If details are sketchy today, there will be more detail by the end of the weekend--it's just that the organizers are busy writing it up for the organization's newsletter, and this weekend is the deadline--so check back there in a couple of days for even more information.

There's no organized lodging, but there areso many Mudcatters within a two-mile radius of the school that requests here and in private messages can almost guarantee out-of-towners will snag an invitation to stay with somebody.

What is the date, cost, location, lodgery, the usual stuff...

Date is Saturday Feb 15
Time: 11 a.m. until ....
Location: Takoma Park, MD

Lodgings: Your best bet is to announce that you're coming and would like to stay with a DC Mudcatter. Chances of getting an invite are very good.... Since most of the performers and attendees are local, there are no formal lodging arrangements or designated hotels, etc.

Don, this is not a huge festival. It's a one day festival, lots going on and much fun, but the crafts area closes at 6pm because they have to put up chairs for the concert... Like that.

There will be the usual: dancing, workshops, storytellers, performer showcases, etc. The day time stuff is workshops, sing-arounds, performer panels, short concerts and at least one dance event at all times. Evening as I said above is a four-act concert in one hall, with a dance in the other main hall.

Everybody--I talked to Jed Marum, and the concert is ON--a house concert sponsored by FSGW, Friday evening, February 14th (Valentine's Day).

Fortunato--you host Jed for the overnight(s)--Fri and Sat at least.

I understand TJ O'Malley wants to host the house concert at his place. Ferrara wants a sing-around after the concert; if TJ doesn't, we can move the house concert to Ferrara and BillD's.so we can do that. We need to establish this in the next few hours, since the newsletter deadline is upon us. (Maybe we should discuss this via phone or private messages? It's remarkable to do this in such a public forum, but hey everybody--this is the logistical, organizational side behind every concert that's usually hidden from view!)

Ferrara--I've got to edit down the e-mails from you into a manageable chunk for publicity, but many thanks.

Jed,

Expedia's route would have you taking I-40 in North Carolina to I-77 and then I-81. It is proably "6 of one and half dozen of the other" in terms of miles, using that route instead of I-40/I-85 to Hillsborough, then I-85 to I-95 and the DC area. Unless ice or snow are forecast in the mountains of Virginia In that event definitely come on through Hillsborough. Either way you will go through Ashville, NC and there are several mudcatter's over that way. We'll be glad to have you here, and/or I would wager one or more of the 'cats around Asheville could put you up. Ashville is probably 8 or 9 hours from Washington.

Good luck making your plans.

I'd like to try to get hooked up with some radio shows, and they may be the decision make for me ... do you know of a local/regional folks show that you think I should look into? Also, can we hook up for some music? Can you PM me when you get a chance? I will begin trying to sort out the radio connections.

Chance and any other MD folks - I've had no luck contacting Mary Cliff. The only way I've ever communicated with her is via email, so I don;t knwo if she's not getting my emails or if she's simply not interested/able to accommodate my request. Either way, I'd prefer a definitive answer! I know she's probably buried with requests, so I have no problem if she can't help ... Jed, let me second Janie's invitation. I'll see her invite and offer you a microphone! Our restaurant/cafe/pub, Lueg's, hosts an old-time music gathering on 1st and 3rd Thursdays, which the 13th is NOT. We try to fill in the off-Thursdays when we can, and would love for you to take the date if you want it.

One hitch is we don't have a budget for Thursday night music, but we can offer food and drink, warm accomodations, and all the publicity we can muster. Talk about working on a shoestring! Feel free to come anyway just to visit, no obligation, but if you WANT to perform that night, at least you'd make tips, maybe sell a few CD's. Who knows?

Let me confirm that the date is open with my partner in the morning, and we'll talk!

MMario - I hope you do make it!

I've booked a radio show in East TN on Thu afternoon. I'll be on WETS a PBS station from East Tennessee State University at about 3PM. Then I drive to LUEG's Cafe in Hillsborough NC. I gather it is less then a 4 our drive - does that sound right, Dani, Janie? If so, I should be there before 8PM - is that start time, Dani? If I'm cutting it too close I could do the radio show on Wed - it would mean an extra day, but could give me some CW site rambling, so I don't mind.

I haven't heard back from Mary Cliff, y'all - but realize that is probably not going to fit her/my travel sched. Dani gave me more radio info to look into, and I may try to find something for the ride home - but Asheville NC has a couple of good looking venues, I have been considering a stop there on my return (which would also be productive, or at least fun). Asheville has a pub with a Sunday session, and with a bit of luck I may be able to make that event.

Thanks to all for helping me make this trip productive. I am much indebted - and looking forward to the trip!

I hope to see/meet as many Mudcatters as possible. Please, please do say hello - even if its busy. I want to meet as many Mudcatters as possible, and maybe get a pic or two snapped (OK - no pics if you don't want one).

I will look in to Mudcat tonight before I head out. See y'all soon!

MMario, I highly recommend the food and accomadations with BillD and Ferrara. And I do envy you the Singaround. I have just missed too much work lately to justify another "emergency".
Have fun. And insist that Rita play her zither.

Mmario -- there will be NO vehicular emergencies allowed this time!!!!!!!

If any other extraneous out-of-town Mudcatters need some floor space, I can clear the dust bunnies out of the way or you can sleep in the top bunk of Dylan's bed...

I love these gatherings of folk. I'm just sorry that I have to miss the protest in NY -- that would be an interesting experience...

Peace y'all

JudyO -- pm me if you need a place to stay!

Jed:

I'm glad you're coming within range this weekend. I plan to slide over the Bay to see you and some of the other FSGW and Mudcatter folks I met at the last two Getaways. Looking forward to another inspiring exposure to great folk(ies).

JimBuck - if you're listening - my bass won't be ready to pick up until next weekend. Bummer. I mean, bum bum bum bum.

Only thing I have left to do (besides finish work today) is finish wrapping the wedding gifts for various peoples and mail the shawl for Stilly River Sage she just won in the auction.

Well we'll see. It's cold but sunny right now, and what cloud cover there was seems to be blowing over. However Washington is one of those places where "if you don't like the weather in this town, stick around for 10 minutes. It's bound to change."

Well, Fortunato, Bill and I will be there, also Dick Greenhaus and Susan of DT. Maybe Mmario too!

And, the weather is fine and warming up a bit. 42 degrees. And they're changing the forecast to "mostly rain" tonight, starting some time after dark. Still sounds ugly for tomorrow but I just think it's going to work out and not be as bad as they say.

I was wrong once though. :-)

Yes, the house concert did happen, and it was excellent! Jed was in fine form, and hopefully he enjoyed it as much as the audience did. Many Catters in attendance, including Mmario, Dick and Susan, and many locals. Good sing-around/jam session afterwards. More jamming at Fortunato's this afternoon.

Too bad about the Mini, but the concert was great.

Cheers, Nancy

yep...it was a great evening. We had pickin', we had singin'..we had drink....(imagine "Faded Love" done with 4-5 GOOD guitarists and singers ...with clarinet and viola breaks....milked till you wanta cry..*grin*)...and silly songs and reparteé till you DID cry...

and then the weather forcasters were right for a change.

And now we have 3" going on 18"...*groan*....

Just thought I'd add a bit about Jed's concert and last night's music at Chance & Suzette's house, which was prompted by the sad demise of the Minifest....

For those who made it, Jed's Friday concert was undoubtedly the thing that saved the weekend! It was very well attended. CarolC and JackTheSailor even made it, and mMario, Dick and Susan, lots of people who were in town for the Minifest showed up. At the start of the evening we were feeling disgruntled because the mini was cancelled, but by the end of Jed's concert there were nothing but smiles all around. And then we still had the sing-around to look forward to.

You have to picture: Jed performed great music for three hours -- and then about 20 of the people who were at the concert made music for another four hours! We would have quit early if the mini was on, but since it wasn't -- Bill and I left at 2 am and I heard the music continued for another hour.

There was a full sized string bass, more guitars than you could shake a stick at, banjos, a viola, an autoharp, it was a glorious jam and sing. Country, 30's pop and blues, ballads, music hall songs, old timey, gospel, I can't remember it all.

Then Chance and Suzette had an open house on Saturday and it started again, this time with a full size harp and my zither-harp added to the mix. Ahhhhh.

Jed, Chance, Suzette, TJ, Julie -- can't thank any of you enough.

Rita

Thanks for the reports! I almost wish I'd come down to be snowed in with y'all. There's a certain feeling to that sort of thing - being safe and warm, sharing music and friendship. I DO hope Jed sold a bunch of CDs so he has enough gas money to get home!

actually, those CDs flew off the rack!...very successful! (I'm not sure it will help on the gas buying, though...I hear strange rumors about keys locked in car with the motor running while digging out....tsk...[it's ok, AAA is only 12-14 hours behind in calls *wry grin*] ,,,paranoid ol' me with advanced CRS syndrome is afraid to go out without 2 sets of keys, as I get confused about whether they are in pants or jacket...I 'almost' locked myself out of the house while shoveling last night)

well, at least Jed is warm and fed and snowed in with musicians!

Yep; keys locked in the truck, engine running, gas tank full. Damn! But we got a lock smith out after an hour and a half or so ... then another foot of snow dropped. It looks like it's stopped snowing now, though. I am not sure if we hit the record, but it's got to be pretty darn close! There must be 3 feet out there.

I very much enjoyed the evening at TJ and Julie's. In fact, it's been pretty much non-stop pickin' since I've been here, with some great players, some great singers and some really fine people.

... but I am ready to head back, if we can get the street plowed out!

Jed.........be careful and enjoy the break.

All the best,
