BS: National Nothing Day

According to my desk calendar of obscure celebrations, Jan. 16 is designated as National Nothing Day. A day set aside for not celebrating or commemorating or observing anything. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do if it's your birthday. And it has occured to me that not observing anything on this day is the same as observing it, so it's a self defeating day.

Anyway, it's kind of nice to not have anything to celebrate at least once during the year. So, Happy Nothing Day.

By proclamation I make it known that today there is no celebration in Germany. So let this day be for all time known as the "No Celebration Day"

I never knew it was Jan 16 though!

So if National Nothing Day is tomorrow (Jan. 16) that makes today (Jan. 15) Nothing's Eve! Should we stay up until midnight and welcome it in by doing.... nothing?

So where's fuckin' Conrad and his greeting cards? A bigger piece of "nothing" ever existed than Conrad....it's obviously his day, one he would celebrate.....So where's my card?

The Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig obviously knew National Nothing Day was coming as he announced it on the July page of his 2002 calendar, beautifully illustrated by several of his gentle little souls.

Announcement

A very limited period of time is coming when no festival, celebration or major event will be making a claim on your existence.

Perhaps it could be called "ordinary time" or "ordinary life". It has no official name. It may not last very long.

There will be no fireworks nor will here be a release of doves or balloons; nor will there be "special offers" of any kind, and no "information hot line"

And there will be no logo, no poster, no slogan There will be the dripping of the tap, the ticking of the clock & and the coming & going of plan & ordinary things.

Perhaps you will also hear a bird sing or a spoon move in a bowl or a person whistling over the back fence or the sound of running secateurs on a rose bush. Who knows?

There will be no media coverage; no commentary or analysis. It will all pass unremarked upon. Will you be ready?

From the History Channel's website:

"1919: Prohibition takes effect

The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes," achieves the necessary two-thirds majority of state ratification, and thus becomes the law of the land."

Now, THAT's something that's REALLY nothing! And I certainly wouldn't celebrate it, 'cause it sent my grandfather to jail. (Fortunately, we have his still still.)

Sandra, you beat me to it! I thought of that Leunig quote, too, but I had to go to choir practice, so I didn't have time to type it.

Here's some more Leunig:

The value of the soul plunged yesterday to its lowest level in five years

Experts said nothing

One person invested in a smile

There were rumours about a small child who had flown over the city on a carpet of rose petals

A meteor plummeted and a few wishes were made

Certain things slid and cracked but a cheer rose up and a dog barked playfully. A violin was heard too

Totally decent, man. I slept in till 1pm and I feel like last weeks road kill. Talk about a nothing day! Its gray out there in Blnd River. Gotta love it. I stile some smokes from Don when he come home last night. He didnt fall for the glass of pee, he is getting smart about that. Too bad. I will put it in a bottle next time. I think he is getting uglier by the day but I guess he aint getting stupider anyway.

This honour is overwhelming. I have done nothing to deserve this level of recognotion. Many have called me the epitome of nothing, so I shall do nothing to avoid this unwonted noteriety.

There is a rather good poem by Adrian Mitchell called "Nothingmas day"
it includes all the children writing No thank you notes, and opening the non presents in their Nothingmas stockings and saying, "Just what I didnt want"

National Nothing Day does celebrate something - the inside of the U.S. Presidents head - that's why it's called NOTHING day

Guess it really was Nothing day... I managed to get nothing done of any value until way after midnight.

Although am happy to report that the machine that Xrayed my head found that contrary to popular belief, there was actually something in there. Investigations are now underway to see if it was put in the right way or if it really is just a bag of porrige.

Liz - the Simon mentioned by Jenny is Rhymin' Simon. They both belong to the choir she mentioned above, the Solidarity Choir, & Jenny was also with the choir when they (it?) toured in 2000.

Actually it was 2001. Liz, Simon told me he met you, and Micca Patterson. It would have been in August. Think Gandalf, or Catweazle.
