Any coloured stocking wearers out there?

Help! Our morris dancing kits includes red stockings or tights and our usual manufacturer (Johnathon Aston) has stopped producing them. The internet has thrown up some interesting variations but nothing in nice plain red. Any ideas out there.

Debenhams department store - great hosiery department! Really. Most of the big department stores seem to have a good range of stock(ings).

My old mum says they used food colouring on their legs during the war years when stockings were unobtainable.
Should you wish to go this route, may I offer my services for drawing in the seams? I have a fine brush and a relatively steady hand!

Have you tried theatrical costumiers or dancewear shops? Surely thespians and hoofers have occasion to wear red stockings (cross gartered? - no that was yellow wasn't it?).

Food colourings? Luxury! It were gravy browning in my mum's day, with an eyeliner pencil for the seam.

A company named Ritz used to make a full range of color fast dyes. Surely that's the cheapest and easiest if regular red isn't there.

Problem with dye is that most tights are nylon which doesn't take dye well. I'd try dance studios/shops.

In the US, Hue brand tights are the best! Lots of bright colors.

Can i order Hue online?
I love colored tights of all shades, and i have been unable to find a good source.
I thought i had finally found a good source online, but when i called to order several pair, the woman seemed to be making dinner or something, and apologized for being distracted, saying she'd had a bad day - not very professional or confidence-inspiring, when you're giving credit card info over the phone,so i didn't order.
They do have a really beautiful, professional website, though!

Here is a site where you can order Hue online. I did a Google search for "Hue tights" and there were many other sources.
Another favorite tight brand is E.G.Smith but I don't know if they come in red!

There's Danskins, and Capezzio (spelled?) stockings and dance-wear. They've got all types and colors.

The major department stores often carry a good range of colours, but if you are wanting 40 or 70 denier you may need to order them as they class as Winter stock and they'll be restocking (no pun) for spring. John Lewis (Nottingham anyway) had some great colours in a couple of weeks ago. Our side use bottle green 70 denier Charnos tights, BUT Charnos are very small-fitting, so you need to get the next size up. You could try thecostumestore.co.uk as I had a browse around there once and they say they stock a good range.

I love Danskins (wear them quite often as posh tights) but the colour range most shops carry is fairly limited (eg toast, light toast, black). And they're £10+ per pair over here!

Your telling me that red socks are a rarity? I buy when I see usually - it saves looking especially.

Red socks aren't the problem Mr Red but I take it you haven't yet got to the point of wearing tights or stockings just because they are red!!!!

Red tights over my head you mean? I might for a bet.

The Morris sides in Stroud - colours are red and black (Pandemonium) and red green and white (Stroud) now the Stroud women definitely wear long sox and white bloomers (I am told). The sox are 1 green 1 white (two pairs per person?). Maybe they know where to get the tights. I am sure Pademonium Women wear tights but haven't checked.

A theatrical costumier would know - surely.

Some sides do wear coloured socks, but your kit has to be long enough to cover the tops, and there is also the risk of them falling down while dancing. Over-knee socks never stay over-knee on me, either. I used to dance in bloomers, which came in very handy when I could only get stockings in the colour we wore then.

Black socks, they never get dirty
The longer your wear them the blacker they get
Some day I'll probably wash them
But something is telling me don't do it yet.

I saw some scarlet opaque tights yesterday - in Bluewater, where I looked in John Lewis (which has a claret colour), Wolford, and M&S. I didn't want them myself, so didn't register which one. Wolford (don't think it was them) have a web site, and were also very good getting me some discontinued colour tights last year from the shop, where they used the computer to locate remaining specimens.

This is Wolford's site

Wolford's hose

The colour swatch (farben) shows two reds - Passion and Lacquer, but I couldn't find any tights or stockingsin those shades.

Not much use, I'm afraid.

Thanks Penny S, your site looks like the answer. If thigh highs are the same as stockings (and I can get them into the UK) I think we're sorted.

Sorry guys.. I don't think we'll need your artistic skills just yet, but I will put your proposals to the team.

Yellow hose was the mark of a batchelor in Elizabethan times. I wonder if there were different stockings for different life-events? In 12th night there was a joke about cross gartered yellow hose if I'm not mistaken

Update on more local source. John Lewis, I think their own brand, called "Cherry", but more like the red part on white cherries than most coloured varieties. The one red sort grown round here is more towards crimson, than these, which are deep scarlet.

Penny

Sorry, I forgot about the eggplant translation. Wolford tell me that purple will be back, but it is in their autumn and winter range, and they are now selling spring colours.....!
