I am looking for the author of the "Manistee River". I think it was written by Jim Crockett. Can anyone help me?

Will the whippoorwill call by the river tonight
and the big trout rise to the fly;

and pick out a song to sing?

Oh the Manistee River runs through Deward

Will she run clear as Stolichnaya
from the yellow trees to the ranch;
will the beer stay cold in the Mecum Bar
when the mayflies rise to dance?

Will the weather be as unpredictable
and the fishing as well the same;
will we carry on as we always have done
and scarcely mention his name?

Oh the Manistee River runs through Deward
and the Manistee runs through Sharon;
she flows I know when we're thinking of love
and she flows when nobody's caring.

Will the solitary mink hunt on her bank
and the coyotes sing out tonight;
will bank beavers gather at their favorite hole
in the late June's warm twilight?

Will the Manistee River give us a nod
to show that she really knows
we're weaker and fewer this year by one
and trying to not let it show.

No, this not "The Manistee River" I sing. Would you think there are two songs about the Manistee river? It's not that great of a river, sorry Michigan folks.

JAY STIELSTA is a fine writer of songs also.

Songs like Like "Tittabawassee Jane" and "Grand Marais" that I first learned from Craig Johnson ----. I believe he is/was a football coach in Ann Arbor.

I fixed the link Richie posted. That page also has a recording of Stielstra's song. Now the page before (click) the song page has this bit of wisdom:

In da beginning....
dere was nuttin'.

Den on da first day, God, He created da Upper Peninsula.

On da t'ird day He said, "Let dere be Yoopers to roam da Upper Peninsula, eh?

This folk tale was found at Lil Abner's in Munising, just a few miles from the Buckhorn.
Makes me feel downright homesick.
